HNEC warns against relying on unofficial municipal election results

Libya Observer3 days ago
The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has warned against obtaining any results related to Saturday's municipal elections in 26 councils from sources other than its official platforms.
In a press conference on Saturday evening, the Commission stressed that no preliminary results circulating on social media or elsewhere should be considered, reaffirming that official results will only be published on the Commission's website and verified social media accounts.
The Commission confirmed that the counting and tallying process had begun and could continue until late into the night. Once completed at the polling stations, the vote tallies will be transferred to the local election administration offices, and then to the central counting and statistics center at the Commission's headquarters in Tripoli, which began its work on Saturday night and will continue until the last ballot form is processed.
According to the Commission, results will be officially announced within 21 days, although the counting process is expected to finish earlier due to the suspension of elections in a number of municipalities.
It also reported that a total of 161,684 voters cast their ballots between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, representing 71% of eligible voters who had collected their voting cards. Tags: HNEC municipal elections

Libya's youth praised for strong turnout in municipal elections

The Minister of Youth, Fathallah Al-Zunni, has hailed what he described as the 'remarkable and effective' participation of young people in the country's second round of municipal council elections for 2025. Al-Zunni said more than 25 young men and women, all members of local youth councils, stood as candidates in 22 of the 26 municipalities where elections were held. He described this as clear evidence of growing awareness among young people about the importance of taking part in local governance. 'This is not just about numbers or symbolic presence,' the minister said in a statement on Sunday. 'It reflects a deep understanding that positive change starts at the grassroots, and that municipal councils are genuine platforms for building a better future.' He added that the high level of participation also demonstrated the results of two years of training and capacity-building provided to youth in the fields of local administration and elections. Concluding, Al-Zunni reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to backing young leaders in municipal councils. 'We are proud of this national spirit and sense of responsibility. Our young people represent not only the future of the nation, but also its vibrant and ambitious present,' he said. Tags: youth municipal elections
