‘Pakistan ko kehna bhaijan': Ajay Rai's ‘nimbu-mirchi on Rafale' remark fumes BJP, others on social media
During a press conference, Rai, who unsuccessfully contested against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi in the past, slammed the government for not acting after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including tourists, on April 22.
Rai accused the Centre of 'big talk and no action' against the perpetrators of the terror attack, the worst against civilians since 2000.
In the video, Rai displayed a white toy plane (Rafale) with lemon-chillies hanging on it.
'Terrorist activities have increased in the country, and people are suffering from it. Our youth lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack... But, this government, which talks a lot, says that they will crush terrorists – they brought Rafale, but they are in their hangars having chilly and lemon hanging in them. When will they take action against terrorists, those who support them, and their backers?' ANI news agency quoted Rai.
Rai's statement was also amplified by Pakistani news sites, triggering a rebuttal from the saffron camp.
'The Congress Party and its leaders are being disloyal to India and our people, and the Congress leaders are deliberately trying to defame and demoralise our brave armed forces. The deplorable statements by Ajay Rai, UP Congress chief, from where Rahul Gandhi is MP, are most condemnable. Congress leaders are reprehensible, repeat offenders who are repeatedly dishonourably trying to lower the morale and resolve of our armed forces. But the Congress party's sinister ploy will not be successful,' BJP leader CR Kesavan said.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, 'Why is a continuous attack being made on the morale of armed forces? Congress party is not taking action because Pakistan ko kehna bhaijaan, sena ka karna apman, ye Congress ki bann chuki hai pehchan, Pakistan aur Congress do shareer aur bole ek hi zubaan.'
The remark also drew ire from people who took to social media to express their outrage. A user wrote: 'Who will make fun of the Indian army and its weapons? Pakistan. But he is a senior Congress leader from Kashi doing the same.'
Another user added: 'Did you mock after 26/11?'
A third user said: 'Did you say Senior... sir, there is no seniority.'
Another said: 'Shame on you.'
Ajay Rai Defends His Remarks Rai on Sunday defended his controversial comment about lemons and chilies being tied to the Indian Air Force's Rafale fighter jets, saying he merely highlighted what had already been documented and called on the government to take concrete steps against terrorism. 'I showed the facts to the nation. When Defence Minister Rajnath Singh went to receive the Rafale jets, he tied lemons and chilies to them. There are photos and videos from that moment. I simply asked: when will the lemons and chilies be removed? When will Rafale be used effectively? When will there be real action against terrorism? Yesterday, I raised these questions... Congress has always stood with the government. The CWC has clearly said it supports any strong action taken by the government (in response to Pahalgam terror attack). But we are saying - stop misleading people and take action,' he said.
The senior Congress leader's remarks come in the backdrop of India's recent defence deal—a ₹ 63,000 crore agreement with France for 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. Signed earlier this week, the deal aims to bolster India's naval strike capabilities.
The Rafale deal became a political issue after the opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, alleged irregularities in the deal with the French firm related to the purchase of 36 Rafale multirole fighter aircraft.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on Thursday hit out at the central government for not releasing Punjab's share of GST compensation worth Rs 50,000 crore besides withholding Rs 8,000 crore under the Rural Development Fund (RDF). Cheema made the remarks while talking to the media in Delhi as he went to attend the GST Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting. He said that GST had inflicted a Rs 1.11 lakh crore loss on Punjab, with the Centre releasing only Rs 60,000 crore so far, while over Rs 50,000 crore and an additional Rs 8,000 crore under the RDF remained withheld. Slamming the GST, the Punjab Finance Minister stressed that the state would not have suffered such massive revenue losses had it not joined the 'One Nation-One Tax' scheme and in fact it would have received much more revenue. With the compensation cess now scrapped, he called out the BJP government for deliberately wrecking state economies to make them beg before the Centre. 'We honoured the central government's decision (on GST) and stood with the country, but Punjab suffered for it. Along with Punjab, many other states also suffered.' 'On August 20–21, the GoM met continuously for two days. On Wednesday, the meeting was on life and health insurance. In the evening, a meeting was held on compensation cess. The Chairman told us that today the meeting was on rate rationalisation, and that all members of the compensation cess would participate. Therefore, we also participated in Thursday's meeting,' he said. 'GST was implemented in 2017. In the past eight years, there have been 27 amendments in GST, with exemptions given to different sectors. Fifteen times the GST rates of various goods were reduced. This practice has been continuing in the GST Council for the last eight years, and for the past three years I have been witnessing it myself.' Cheema also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier declared that there would be two GST slabs — one at 5 per cent and another at 12 per cent — and that 'everyone would celebrate Diwali'. 'But after the GST came, who will compensate for the loss suffered by Punjab and other states? Who will pay for this damage? One Nation, One Tax was the scheme of the central government, and all states including Punjab gave their consent. Everyone agreed that uniform tax rates should prevail across the country so that no state could impose higher or lower taxes on its citizens. But this formula has inflicted a huge loss on Punjab.' Emphasising on Punjab's loss, the Finance Minister said, 'In all three meetings of the GST Group of Ministers, I placed Punjab's position. So far, Punjab has lost Rs 1,11,045 crore. Out of this, the central government has given Rs 60,000 crore compensation, but still Rs 50,000 crore remains with the central government. Who will pay this money?' Cheema also said ever since the GST has been introduced, the BJP-led central government has kept making one amendment after another, but never reached a conclusion. 'Taxpayers of the country are being harassed continuously. The system of the country is being destroyed. Several states are continuously losing revenue due to the GST system. The central government has backed away from making up for this loss.' Detailing the latest discussions, Cheema said, 'In Thursday's meeting on compensation cess, the government said that the loans taken to pay states under compensation cess would be fully repaid by October. On harmful goods (sin goods), a special tax was imposed. The states suffering losses in its collection were being compensated. But now the report of the rate rationalisation committee shows that even the tax slab on sin goods is being reduced.' The Finance Minister also claimed that two days ago, another Rs 1,000 crore under the Prime Minister Road Scheme was also stopped. 'In this way, nearly Rs 60,000 crore is pending with the central government against Punjab. This includes the Rs 50,000-crore revenue loss (Punjab faced) after the (implementation of) GST. The central government must immediately release Rs 60,000 crore,' he concluded.

CM defends spending ₹10 crore each on Wayanad flood relief and Sadhana Samavesha from State funds
Under attack from the Opposition for Karnataka giving ₹10 crore as flood relief in Wayanad in Kerala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday defended the expenditure on the grounds that it was a humanitarian gesture. He also defended spending another ₹10 crore on Sadhana Samavesha in Hospete. 'Wayanad witnessed heavy rainfall and landslips and hundreds of people died. Should we not be humane? It is our dharma and responsibility to help,' the Chief Minister said during the discussion on the Money Bill for supplementary estimates of ₹3,352.57 crore before it was passed in Legislative Council on Thursday. In Assembly too, the gesture towards Wayanad came under attack and Leader of Opposition R. Ashok wondered why Karnataka did not show similar large heartedness towards other calamity-hit States. 'The Chief Minister is giving ₹10 lakh to build each house in Kerala, while those in our own State get a meagre sum of ₹95,000 to build their houses during calamity,' said Mr. Ashok. On the expenditure for Sadhana Samavesha, the Chief Minister said, 'Should we not tell the people as to what we have done? It was an event to showcase the achievement of our two-year governance.' The Opposition, debating this issue in Assembly, called it 'Congress party programme.' What it proposes Constituting 0.78 % of the budget, the supplementary estimates proposes ₹2,552 crore as revenue expenditure and ₹ 790 crore towards capital expenditure. The Chief Minister said that the State was expecting ₹820.20 crore from the Centre and ₹262.20 crore from the reserve fund. 'The total outgo will be ₹2,269 crore. We will try to increase the revenue receipts and make reappropriation. If needed, we will take loan. This is the first instalment (of supplementary estimates),' the Chief Minister said. According to him, of the total, ₹1,500 crore will go into the guarantee redemption fund (GRF) that is set aside as per the RBI guidelines as surety for loans raised by the public undertakings. 'Five per cent of of the total debt raised by the public undertakings has to be in the GRF as per RBI guidelines. Currently, the fund has ₹760 crore, whereas the total guarantees given by the State is for debt amounting to ₹46,271 crore.' When the BJP members raised the issue of 'diversion' of funds from SCP/ TSP, the Chief Minister said, 'We were the ones to bring the SCP/TSP Act. Show me one BJP-ruled State that has brought similar plan. I urge the Centre to spend development expenditure according to the population of the SCs.' The Bill was eventually passed amid the din.
