Researchers make incredible breakthrough that could solve major issue in medical industry: 'Unprecedented'
In 2019, scientists at Carnegie Mellon University developed a technique called FRESH — or freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels — to 3D-print living tissues using collagen. As SciTechDaily explains, collagen is "the most abundant protein in the human body" and provides "essential structure and support to nearly all tissues and organs."
In simple terms, the method enables researchers to print soft, delicate materials — including collagen and living cells — within hydrogel without damaging them. This allows for the creation of lab-grown tissue structures that are both biologically accurate and highly functional.
Recently, the team used this method to create the first-ever microphysiologic system made entirely from collagen. The researchers hope the lab-built tissue models could one day help treat conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, which happens when the body stops producing insulin in the pancreas.
With this method, researchers could grow miniature pancreatic tissues that function like the real thing, offering a new way to study the disease, test treatments, or even develop transplantable tissue that helps patients produce insulin again.
"Now, we can build microfluidic systems in the Petri dish entirely out of collagen, cells, and other proteins, with unprecedented structural resolution and fidelity," Adam Feinberg, a professor of biomedical engineering and materials science and engineering at Carnegie Mellon, said in a statement. "Most importantly, these models are fully biologic, which means cells function better."
Beyond the medical potential, the innovation could lower the use of plastics in research and modeling. And that has perks for both patients and the planet.
Traditional lab research often relies on plastic-based scaffolds, molds, and containers to test cells in the lab. Most of these plastics are single-use and non-recyclable because of contamination, typically ending up in landfills or incinerators. By enabling the construction of fully biological tissue systems, the FRESH method reduces the need for plastic supports.
If collagen-based tissue modeling leads to viable transplantable tissue, it could one day help treat — or even cure — conditions such as Type 1 diabetes. This would not only improve patient health but also reduce reliance on long-term plastic-based medical devices, including insulin pumps and synthetic implants.
This shift away from plastic materials marks a major improvement for both research and patient care. As the researchers explain, a major limitation of existing tissue models is that they're made from artificial materials that don't mimic natural tissue. This limits their usefulness in drug development and therapy testing. But with new collagen modeling, scientists can conduct more accurate biological testing, improving research accuracy and speed.
"Going forward, the question is not, 'Can we build it?'" Feinberg said in a statement. "It's more of, 'What do we build?'"

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy may soon be asking the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to examine aluminum ingredients in vaccines, according to Bloomberg News. Kennedy has long falsely asserted that vaccines containing aluminum salts as an adjuvant cause health problems. He has made similar claims regarding vaccines that include thimerasol as an adjuvant. In June, ACIP recommended against the use of thimerasol in influenza vaccines. Unlike thimerasol, which is only used in a small percentage of influenza vaccines, multiple types of vaccines contain aluminum. This implies that a possible decision to curb or ban its use could have far-reaching implications. Speaking to governors on July 26th, RFK Jr. said 'we need to look at the aluminum in the vaccines to see if that has anything to do with this explosion of allergies that began in 1989, which was the year they expanded the vaccine schedule.' He specifically cited the hepatitis B jab, falsely saying that in Israel doses of hepatitis B vaccines are not given after birth (they are). This isn't the first time Kennedy has criticized the use of aluminum in vaccines. He said on a podcast in 2024 that aluminum in vaccines is 'extremely neurotoxic.' Aluminum salts are used in vaccines as an adjuvant to help boost a person's immune response. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this ingredient has been used safely in vaccines for more than 70 years, initially in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s with diphtheria and tetanus vaccines; later, in routinely recommended hepatitis, human papilloma virus, pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines. Of note, aluminum is not used in live, weakened viral vaccines, like measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and rotavirus. Vaccines containing aluminum salts are tested for safety and effectiveness in clinical trials before they are licensed for use in the United States, and these vaccines are continuously monitored by the CDC and Food and Drug Administration once they are approved. While at high doses, aluminum is a neurotoxin, the amount contained in vaccines is minuscule. The thimerosal story hints at what could happen should ACIP recommend against the use of aluminum salts. Vaccine makers have long used the mercury-based preservative thimerosal to prevent microbial growth. Experts don't consider thimerosal unsafe. Yet Kennedy's new handpicked ACIP panel voted against flu shots containing thimerosal, despite lack of evidence of negative health effects. Kennedy has now signed off on the recommendation to remove thimerosal from influenza vaccines distributed in the United States. This only impacts a relatively small percentage (4%) of flu vaccines administered to Americans. On the other hand, removing aluminum would impact a much larger number of vaccines. Aluminum is found in numerous foods and beverages, including fruits and vegetables, beer and wine, seasonings, flour, cereals, nuts, dairy products, baby formulas and honey. And besides vaccines, other health products such as antacids, buffered aspirin and antiperspirants contain aluminum. Typically, adults ingest seven to nine milligrams of aluminum daily. Kennedy's claim that aluminum in vaccines is causing an explosion of allergies is considered misinformation by experts. Moreover, his assertion that Israel delays the hepatitis B shot is inaccurate; Israel follows World Health Organization guidelines and vaccinates newborns just like the U.S. While there has been a worldwide rise in allergies, experts don't attribute it to vaccines. It's considered a complex issue driven by environmental factors, genetics and lifestyle. A newly published study of over one million people in Denmark found no link between aluminum and 50 chronic conditions, including autism, allergies and autoimmune diseases. The research included more than 1.2 million people in Denmark who received childhood vaccines. Researchers analyzed medical records of these individuals over a 24-year period. The catalyst for the Danish research was a widely criticized CDC-funded study, published in 2022, that suggested a link between aluminum in childhood vaccines and increased asthma risk. The study, however, didn't distinguish between aluminum from vaccines and from other sources. Previous analyses also showed no correlation between aluminum exposure through vaccines and risks of disease. In 2000, the U.S.-based National Vaccine Program Office determined that no changes to vaccine recommendations were needed after it conducted a review. Likewise, the World Health Organization's Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety evaluated studies and found no evidence of health risks that would require changes to vaccine policy.

Researchers from the University of Western Ontario found that machine learning and advanced decision-making tools could improve how quickly and accurately warnings are issued. The researchers built tsunami warning models using three different methods: multiple linear regression, random forest, and neural network. The last two methods worked better, but the quality of data used to train the models made a significant difference in the accuracy of their predictions. If the training data doesn't reflect real-world conditions, the model may not perform accurately even if it ran well during standard tests. And that's the key challenge. Not all tsunami-prone areas have real-world data. For instance, there are only four ocean-bottom sensors on the west coast of Canada. In Tofino, a popular surfing destination on Vancouver Island, this lack of data poses a huge problem in predicting tsunamis. Although no tsunami has ever hit the town, its topography puts it at a high risk for a huge tsunami. Beneath the waters near Tofino is a tectonic plate boundary whose movement can produce a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. One big jolt from the Cascadia Subduction Zone could trigger a tsunami up to 30 meters high, capable of reaching the shoreline within 20 minutes. The researchers still don't know how large the tsunami might be, but they're certain that it will happen. A trio of celestial events could dazzle across the sky in August, starting with the Full Sturgeon Moon, followed by the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, and then the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower. The eighth full Moon of the year, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will reach peak illumination at 3:55 a.m. EDT on Friday, Aug. 9, but will appear full and bright for several nights surrounding the peak. The name "Sturgeon Moon" has historical ties to Native American and colonial traditions, as the large freshwater sturgeon fish were most easily caught during this time in waterways across North America. Unlike last year, August 2025 will not feature a Blue Moon, as there are only 12 full Moons on the calendar this year. A Blue Moon can refer either to the second full Moon in a calendar month or the third full Moon in a season that contains four events. The next Blue Moon is expected to rise during May 2026. Don't Miss These Celestial Events In 2025 Just a few days after the full Moon, early risers will be treated to the planetary conjunction of Jupiter and Venus in the predawn sky on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The event occurs when the two planets appear very close together in the sky and will be rather bright.
