Terror Accused Yasin Bhatkal Appears via Video in Mangaluru Court
The 2008 Ullal police case had named 13 individuals, including Bhatkal, for allegedly conspiring to carry out bombings and stockpiling explosives in the Mukkacheri and Chembugudde areas of Mangaluru. The Karnataka police had booked them under multiple sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
While seven of the accused were arrested and tried — with three sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 — six remained untraced. Bhatkal had been on the run and was later arrested in a different case.
Police say that due to his incarceration in another state, he hadn't been produced in the Ullal case until now. Coordination between Ullal police and Tihar authorities facilitated his video appearance on July 24. The court has set the next hearing for August 20.
Authorities hope that Bhatkal's inclusion in the trial will help bring closure to one of the earliest known Indian Mujahideen plots in Karnataka. This marks a key step forward in ongoing anti-terror prosecutions involving pan-India networks. (eom)

Last Updated: Shwetha Menon asked the Kerala HC to dismiss a criminal case against her, claiming it's intended to harm her campaign within AMMA before the presidential election. Malayalam actress Shwetha Menon has approached the Kerala High Court seeking to quash the criminal case registered against her, days before the crucial AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) presidential election. In her petition, she has linked the timing of the case to an alleged attempt to tarnish her image within the organisation, where she is a frontrunner. The FIR invokes Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which penalizes the publication or transmission of sexually explicit content in electronic form. It also cites Sections 3 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, relating to prostitution-related offences—specifically, for allegedly maintaining or permitting premises to be used as a brothel (Section 3) and for procuring or inducing a person for prostitution (Section 5). Menon, who is contesting for the post of president of AMMA, stated in her plea that if elected, she would be the first woman to head the prominent film body. The case in question pertains to allegations of obscenity in films she acted in — all of which, she has argued, have long been legally certified by the Censor Board and released publicly. 'The last day for withdrawal of the nomination was 31st July. It is on the said date that Annexure-1 complaint is submitted. It is apposite in this context to point out that, in connection with the election to the association, faction feud, was going on and common consensus leaned towards a women president making her a strong contender for the post", she said. In her petition, Shwetha Menon also said that the films cited in the complaint — including Rathinirvedam, Paleri Manikyam and Kalimannu — were all legally certified and have been available in the public domain for years. She argues that the sudden filing of the case just as the AMMA elections approach appears to be intended to damage her public image and derail her campaign. She has asked the High Court to quash the FIR and stay further proceedings. The outcome of the plea could have a major impact not only on her candidacy but on the trajectory of the AMMA leadership race itself. Man arrested for alleged attempt to extort and defame actor-director Balachandra Menon
The Kochi City Cyber Crime police have arrested a man accused in the case registered in connection with an alleged attempt to extort actor-director Balachandra Menon and tarnish him over social media. The arrested was identified as Sangeeth Luis, 46, a native of Kundara in Kollam and now residing at Ayyanthole in Thrissur. The police said he was an accused in several cases. He was under the surveillance of the police for a while and was arrested in the early-morning hours of Thursday (August 7, 2025). The incident pertaining to the case took place last September. He was declared an offender under the Kerala Anti-social Activities (Prevention) Act and arrested on preventive grounds by the Kundara police in 2023, the police said. The police had arrested the other accused in the case, actor Minnu Muneer, 45, after she surrendered at the station on June 30, 2025. She surrendered at the Cyber Crime police station after the Kerala High Court dismissed her anticipatory bail plea and directed her to appear before the police. Later, she was released on bail as per the direction of the High Court. The case was registered on October 2, 2024. The accused were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), the IT Act Sections 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form), and the Kerala Police Act 120 (o) (causing, through any means of communication, a nuisance of himself to any person by repeated or undesirable or anonymous call, letter, writing, message, e-mail or through a messenger). According to the FIR, Ms. Muneer consistently made derogatory posts against the petitioner, posted the photo of the petitioner and instigated vulgar comments. The second accused allegedly made threatening calls to the petitioner on September 13 and 14, 2024. The alleged posts came shortly after the release of the Hema Committee report on the alleged atrocities against woman in the film industry.
