Malta, UK and France to recognize State of Palestine at UN General Assembly
ALBAWABA - The Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, announced on Tuesday that his country will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Malta's decision came following a similar announcement made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the UK will be recognizing the state of Palestine.
"Our position expresses our commitment to efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East," Abela wrote on Facebook.
The government in Malta has been under increasing pressure from within its ranks to recognize a Palestinian state, and the right-wing opposition called for immediate recognition in mid-July.
Abela first revealed plans to recognize a Palestinian state in May, but the decision was later postponed.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Britain intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly next September, "if the Israeli government does not take substantive steps to end the horrific situation in Gaza and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace."
French President Emmanuel Macron also announced that his country will formally recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly.

Israeli FM: We Will Not End Gaza War on Hamas' Terms - Jordan News
Israeli FM: We Will Not End Gaza War on Hamas' Terms Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar asserted Monday that Israel will not end the war in Gaza under conditions set by Hamas, emphasizing that the return of all captives held in the Strip must occur unconditionally. اضافة اعلان Speaking at a press conference, Sa'ar stated: 'Hamas is trying to impose terms aimed at ensuring its continued rule over Gaza—this is categorically unacceptable. We will not conclude the war based on Hamas' demands.' He reiterated Israel's goal of ending the war and securing the release of all captives, while favoring diplomatic solutions over prolonged military conflict. Sa'ar acknowledged ongoing U.S. efforts to develop a post-war framework for Gaza and said that Israel is closely coordinating with Washington on this matter. He noted that the U.S. intends to step up efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with active coordination underway. The Israeli minister also criticized positions taken by countries such as France, Canada, and the UK, arguing their actions amounted to 'rewarding Hamas' and prolonging the conflict. He urged these nations to 'understand the consequences of their behavior,' characterizing their recent decisions as indirect support for Hamas. Sa'ar accused the group of terrorizing Palestinian civilians and using them as human shields, reiterating: 'There is no place for Hamas in the future of Gaza unless it disarms and abandons its militant path.' He concluded by affirming Israel's condemnation of terrorism everywhere.

Francesca Albanese loses blue checkmark on X after US sanctions
Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, has lost her "blue check" verification badge on X, formerly Twitter. The removal, which occurred today, marks the first reported instance of a UN official having their verified status removed from a major social media platform due to national sanctions. This action follows a legal appeal sent to X's owner, Elon Musk, by a law firm representing the Geneva-based watchdog UN Watch on July 31, 2025. UN Watch is often described as 'a lobby group with strong ties to Israel', and regulatory denounces what it says is anti-'Israel' sentiment at the UN and UN-sponsored events. The de-verification comes after the US government sanctioned Albanese on July 9, 2025. These sanctions, enacted under Executive Order 14203, include freezing any US-based assets, prohibiting her entry into the United States, and banning US citizens and entities from providing her with goods or services. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the sanctions by stating Albanese had "spewed unabashed antisemitism, expressed support for terrorism, and open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West," specifically citing her efforts to "prompt the International Criminal Court (ICC) action against US and Israeli officials, companies and executives". Albanese, an Italian human rights lawyer appointed UN Special Rapporteur in May 2022, has been a vocal critic of 'Israel's' actions in Gaza, asserting they amount to genocide and calling for an immediate ceasefire. She recently issued a report identifying US companies aiding Israel's occupation and war in Gaza. In response to the sanctions, Albanese dismissed them as "mafia-style intimidation techniques" and "obscene," reaffirming her commitment to justice and international law. X's policy mandates compliance with trade laws, including US sanctions, stating that individuals or entities on a restricted sanctions list "can't purchase X Premium to keep your verification".

House democrats push Trump to recognize Palestinian state: Axios reports
More than a dozen House Democrats have signed a letter urging the Trump administration to formally recognize a Palestinian state, with one lawmaker planning to introduce a resolution supporting Palestinian statehood, Axios reported on Sunday. The letter, spearheaded by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), reflects growing momentum among Democrats as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens. Lawmakers cite the scale of suffering, including reports of famine and forced starvation, as a driving factor behind the renewed calls for Palestinian self-determination. 'This tragic moment has highlighted for the world the long overdue need to recognize Palestinian self-determination,' reads the letter addressed to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to a copy obtained by Axios. Reps. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), and Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) recently joined the initiative, alongside nine earlier signatories including Reps. Greg Casar, Lloyd Doggett, Veronica Escobar, Maxwell Frost, Al Green, Jared Huffman, Mark Pocan, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and André Carson, one of three Muslim members of Congress. The letter follows a similar call from French President Emmanuel Macron, who pledged to recognize a Palestinian state at an upcoming UN meeting in September. The US remains unlikely to shift its position under Trump, who has maintained a strong alliance with "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Axios. Khanna told Axios the response to his outreach had been 'overwhelming,' adding that recognition should come in alignment with the Arab League's newly passed two-state plan, which includes recognition of "Israel" as a Jewish democratic state. Rep. Watson Coleman said in a statement: 'If we're to see an end to war, famine, and the return of hostages, the recognition of a Palestinian state, contingent on the disarmament of Hamas and security guarantees for both Israel and Palestine, must be a part of that process.' The push marks a notable shift in congressional sentiment. Only five Democrats supported a similar resolution introduced in 2023 by Rep. Green affirming Palestine's right to exist. Now, the number has nearly tripled. Rep. Green told Axios he intends to reintroduce his resolution this session, pending staff consultations on the language. Lawmakers also hinted that more pro-Palestinian initiatives are expected in the weeks ahead.
