Texas A&M Pursues Top-Ranked Transfer DT Braxton Fely to Fill NFL Draft Void

Yahoo25-04-2025
The spring college football transfer portal window is in full swing and schools around the country are looking to put the finishing touches on their 2025 rosters. Spring practices and games have given teams an idea of what their biggest weaknesses are, and they are looking to fix those shortcomings through the portal.
For Texas A&M, one of those weaknesses is the defensive line. The Aggies lost edge rushers Shemar Stewart and Nic Scourton and defensive tackle Shemar Turner to the 2025 NFL Draft, so the position is a question mark entering 2025.

With uncertainty along the defensive line, the Aggies are searching for reinforcements in the portal. Texas A&M has been in pursuit of Boise State defensive tackle Braxton Fely and landed in Fely's top six.

Fely's agent told On3 that his final six schools are California, Georgia Tech, Miami, Ole Miss, TCU and Texas A&M. At Boise State, Fely tallied 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles over three seasons. Fely earned All-Mountain West honors last season.
Fely is the 4th-ranked player in the portal, according to Athlon Sports' latest transfer rankings. Fely tallied 9.5 tackles for loss in 2024 and his strong run defense has garnered plenty of high-major interest.

The Aggies could pair Fely with standout freshman Marco Jones, who shined in Texas A&M's spring game. Jones, a four-star recruit, tallied five sacks and six tackles for loss in the game, solidifying his spot as one of Texas A&M's primary edge rushers.
Texas A&M also returns Albert Regis on the interior of the defensive line. Regis started all 13 games in 2024 at defensive tackle and tallied 36 tackles. The Aggies also added Iowa State transfer defensive tackle Tyler Onyedim in January, who is expected to be a key contributor in 2025.
Outside of Regis and Onyedim, the Aggies have little experience on their defensive line. Adding Fely would solidify Texas A&M's defensive line and give the Aggies much-needed depth inside.
Fely is visiting Miami Tuesday and took a visit to California on April 18. He's expected to visit his four other finalists, including Texas A&M, shortly after he completes his Miami visit.

Two LSU football defenders earn preseason All-American honors

Two LSU football linebackers earned preseason All-American honors from the Associated Press on Monday. Whit Weeks landed on the first team with Harold Perkins joining the second team. Weeks and Perkins both missed spring practice after each had an injury that required surgery in 2024. Perkins tore his ACL in week four and was out for the year. Weeks was carted off the field in LSU's bowl win after playing the entire regular season. Both recoveries progressed as expected, and the duo is making a strong impression during fall camp. Weeks, a junior, is coming off a breakout campaign where he finished No. 2 among SEC linebackers in stops and pressures. With a strong year, Weeks will finish as one of the most productive linebackers in LSU history and compete for the Butkus Award. Perkins' narrative is a little more complicated. He was a star situational pass rusher in 2022, but he struggled after moving to inside backer in 2023. It's been an up-and-down three years for Perkins as he enters his redshirt junior campaign. Perkins will play the STAR role in Blake Baker's defense this fall. By all accounts, he's more comfortable there. There's still some uncertainty about how Perkins will look in 2025, but his raw athletic ability was enough to earn him a spot on the All-American list. Weeks and Perkins will take the field with LSU when the Tigers kickoff their season at Clemson on Aug. 30. LSU football coach Brian Kelly on what the return of Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks means for LSU "Presence is impactful, right? You see them, you feel them, you hear them. And so when somebody's not around in a room, you can kind of feel the temperature change a little bit. The temperature's a little bit different when those two guys are in the room," Kelly said at the start of fall camp. "People talk about missing somebody. It's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference," Kelly said.

Five-time All-Star John Wall retires from NBA after injuries derailed career

John Wall, a five-time NBA All-Star who spent the majority of his career with the Washington Wizards, announced his retirement from professional basketball on Tuesday, Aug. 19. In a post on social media, Wall thanked family and fans and said he wants to remain involved in the game. He hasn't played in the NBA since the 2022-23 season, and his longevity and production were interrupted by injuries, especially late in his career. After spending one season in college at Kentucky where the Wildcats went to the Elite Eight under John Calipari, Wall was the No. 1 overall pick by the Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft, and he zoomed into the league with his blazing speed and explosiveness. He averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 assists and 1.8 steals in his rookie season, earning second-team All-Rookie honors. Wall, the 2014 NBA slam dunk contest champion. was just the player to help usher in the Wizards' rebuild and distance the franchise from the end of the Gilbert Arenas tenure. Wall's dynamic style as a scorer, pick-and-roll ace, passer, defender and fastbreak generator made him a fan favorite in Washington, D.C. His behind-the-back move with the basketball while racing toward the rim baffled defenders and often resulted in creative, blow-by layups. By the time Scott Brooks took over as coach of the Wizards in 2016, Washington had turned into one of the better teams in the league. With Bradley Beal, the No. 3 pick in the 2012 draft, the Wizards also had one of the best backcourts in the league. Washington finished 49-33 in 2016-17 and lost to the Boston Celtics in a seven-game second-round series. That season, Wall averaged 23.1 points, 10.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals and shot 45.1% from the field, 32.7% on 3-pointers and 80.1% on free throws. He made the All-Star team, finished seventh in MVP voting and made his only All-NBA team. However, the Wizards haven't won a playoff series since, and injuries began to derail Wall's career. After playing in 78 game in 2017-18, he never played in more than 41 games the next five seasons and missed all of the 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons. He played nine seasons for the Wizards who traded him to Houston in 2020. He spent his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers. In a tribute post on social media, the Wizards called Wall one of the best players in franchise history. He is Washington's all-time leader in assists (5,282) and steals (976) and the team's fourth all-time leading scorer (10,879 points). The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. John Wall retires: NBA fans celebrated the 5-time All-Star's career

Though John Wall did not appear in an NBA game last season, he expressed hope in February of continuing his basketball career. On Tuesday, though, the five-time All-Star put an end to those hopes. Wall — the Wizards' former No. 1 overall pick in 2010 — announced his retirement after 11 NBA seasons. The electrifying point guard from Kentucky entered the league with enormous hype. And despite battling injuries for the final six seasons of his career, he solidified himself among the Wizards' franchise greats. He'll finish his career as the Wizards' all-time assists and steals leader — along with ranking fourth in the franchise's points leaderboard. He made the announcement in a video on Twitter/X. After Wall's retirement news was announced, NBA fans joined in to celebrate Wall's prolific career. This was how Twitter/X reacted
