Two LSU football defenders earn preseason All-American honors

USA Todaya day ago
Two LSU football linebackers earned preseason All-American honors from the Associated Press on Monday. Whit Weeks landed on the first team with Harold Perkins joining the second team.
Weeks and Perkins both missed spring practice after each had an injury that required surgery in 2024. Perkins tore his ACL in week four and was out for the year. Weeks was carted off the field in LSU's bowl win after playing the entire regular season. Both recoveries progressed as expected, and the duo is making a strong impression during fall camp.
Weeks, a junior, is coming off a breakout campaign where he finished No. 2 among SEC linebackers in stops and pressures. With a strong year, Weeks will finish as one of the most productive linebackers in LSU history and compete for the Butkus Award.
Perkins' narrative is a little more complicated. He was a star situational pass rusher in 2022, but he struggled after moving to inside backer in 2023. It's been an up-and-down three years for Perkins as he enters his redshirt junior campaign. Perkins will play the STAR role in Blake Baker's defense this fall. By all accounts, he's more comfortable there. There's still some uncertainty about how Perkins will look in 2025, but his raw athletic ability was enough to earn him a spot on the All-American list.
Weeks and Perkins will take the field with LSU when the Tigers kickoff their season at Clemson on Aug. 30.
LSU football coach Brian Kelly on what the return of Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks means for LSU
"Presence is impactful, right? You see them, you feel them, you hear them. And so when somebody's not around in a room, you can kind of feel the temperature change a little bit. The temperature's a little bit different when those two guys are in the room," Kelly said at the start of fall camp.
"People talk about missing somebody. It's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference," Kelly said.

CFP committee adding weight to games against strong opponents, limit reward for beating weak foes

The College Football Playoff selection committee announced Wednesday it will place more emphasis on strength of schedule this year when determining which teams make the 12-team field. The committee said in a statement that the schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents. An additional metric, record strength, has been added to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. 'This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team,' the committee said. 'Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.' The adjustment to the evaluation process comes after some in the Southeastern Conference complained about last season's inclusion of — at the time of selections — an 11-2 SMU of the Atlantic Coast Conference over a 9-3 Alabama or even a 9-3 South Carolina or 9-3 Mississippi. SMU's losses were to an unranked BYU and a ranked Clemson in the ACC championship game. Alabama had bad losses against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, both .500 at the time, but also had wins over a second-ranked Georgia, No. 21 Missouri and No. 14 LSU. Prompted by concerns about how teams that don't play in conference championship games are judged, the committee reviewed the movement of idle teams from the second-to-last ranking to final ranking. The selection committee reaffirmed that movement in the final week should be evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement. The committee also updated its policy on recusal of selection committee members. A member will be fully recused from the evaluation of a team if he or she receives direct compensation from the school in question or has an immediate family member who is a football player, football staff member or senior administrator at the school. A fully recused member is not allowed to participate in any deliberations or vote concerning that school. A member will be partially recused if he or she has a secondary relationship with the school in question, such as an immediate family member employed by the institution but outside of the football program or senior administration. A partially recused member may remain present and participate in discussions related to the team in question but is not allowed to participate in votes involving the team. The selection committee will release its five weekly Top 25 rankings on Nov. 4. The final rankings and playoff field will be announced Dec. 7. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Florida football center Jake Slaughter is a USA TODAY Sports 2025 preseason All-American

USA TODAY Sports released its preseason All-America teams ahead of the 2025 campaign and included one Florida Gator among the three-team deep roster. Redshirt senior center Jake Slaughter was the lone member of the Orange and Blue to get the call, but the good news is that he made the prestigious first-team list, placing him among the best of the best offensively in college football this fall. "Slaughter is odds-on favorite to capture the Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center," Paul Myerberg notes in reference to the highly heralded Gator. The 6-foot-5-inch, 303-pound offensive lineman has already put together an impressive preseason resume, being named to the Lombardi Trophy watch list, as well as the Rimington Trophy and Outland Trophy watch lists, while also being named to the Sporting News' and ESPN's preseason All-America First Teams — not to mention a first-teamer on the coaches' All-SEC team. Jake Slaughter's 2024 stats Slaughter started all 13 games in 2024, amassing a mountain of awards, including the AP All-SEC First-Team, ESPN All-American, PFF All-American First-Team, 247Sports/CBS All-American Second-Team, CFN All-American Second-Team, Phil Steel All-American Fourth-Team and USA TODAY Sports All-SEC First-Team. He was ranked fifth nationally among centers last year with an offense grade of 81.1, while ranking seventh in the country with a run block grade of 79.0. He also led the team in PFF offense, pass-block and run-block grades, as well as the offensive line as a whole in 800 snaps played. The Athletic predicts Florida football's SEC, regular-season outcomes ahead of 2025

College football returns this weekend with its Week 0 lineup, but the Gator Nation will have to wait until Week 1 before it gets its taste of the gridiron Gators. Ahead of the start of a much-anticipated campaign, The Athletic's Stewart Mandel cast his predictions for the SEC this fall, including Billy Napier's team. In it, he has the Orange and Blue splitting its conference games evenly at 4-4 while projecting a 7-5 finish to the regular-season schedule. "Billy Napier earned a reprieve after November upsets of LSU and Ole Miss propelled the Gators to an 8-5 finish. Lagway is bursting with talent," Mandel offers. "But those now mentioning Florida as a CFP candidate may be overreacting. All of the Gators' best performances were at home. This year they visit LSU, Miami, Texas A&M and Ole Miss." While his prediction would have Florida falling well short of a College Football Playoff berth, the fanbase could probably live with it after experiencing three straight losing seasons recently. Add another bowl victory to the pot and the Gators can finish on par with 2024 at 8-5 — not too shabby.
