Get a first look at Nicolas Cage as NFL legend John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis in upcoming biopic 'Madden'
Oscar winners Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale portray NFL giants John Madden and Al Davis, respectively, in the first image Amazon MGM Studios has released from its upcoming movie Madden. The film focuses on the NFL coach and commentator who was the face and voice of the phenomenally popular John Madden Football and Madden NFL video games released beginning in the ʼ80s.
"The film follows Madden's remarkable journey — from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with Al Davis and the Raiders, to creating Madden NFL, and becoming one of the most iconic voices in football history," the studio said in a release.
The image features the characters standing in a football stadium, sporting Super Bowl rings.
A former football player who was drafted into the NFL but suffered an injury before he could play, Madden later became a coach of the Oakland Raiders.
"He led the Raiders to 10 consecutive winning seasons and the Super Bowl XI title before retiring following the 1978 season as the youngest coach ever to win 100 games," according to the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. By 1979, he became a color commentator on TV. Within a decade, he was a brand. He died in December 2021 at 85.
Davis, who died in October 2011, was a former owner of the Raiders and a close friend of Madden.
In addition to Cage and Bale, the film's cast includes John Mulaney as tech entrepreneur Trip Hawkins; Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife, Virginia; and Sienna Miller as Davis's wife, Carol.Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell, whose work includes directing Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, and American Hustle, is behind the lens. He also produced and wrote the project, following an earlier version from Cambron Clark.
The movie is already shooting in Atlanta, although the release date has not yet been announced.
A day earlier, the studio released a first-look image of Cage in its live-action Spider-Noir series.

Analyzing the Browns' snap counts vs. the Eagles
The Cleveland Browns' second preseason matchup provided the team with a better look at where some of their position battles stand as the regular season approaches. The Browns got a look at another rookie quarterback with Dillon Gabriel getting the start, and several veteran players vying for roles on the team stepped up to the occasion during the team's 22-13 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Let's take a look at the snap counts from the win in Philadelphia: Offense With quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Shedeur Sanders sidelined with injuries, the Browns again only played two quarterbacks on Saturday. As previously mentioned, third-round pick Dillon Gabriel got the start and played the entire first half against the Eagles (38 snaps). Tyler Huntley closed out the game again for Cleveland and played the remaining 28 snaps on offense. This time around, the most active face on offense was veteran running back Pierre Strong Jr., who is fighting for a roster spot in a crowded running back room. Strong played 65% of the Browns' offensive snaps on Saturday (43 plays), while the rest of the team's active running backs – Ahmani Marshall, Trayveon Williams, and Toa Taua – combined for 23 snaps. Rookie wide receiver Gage Larvadain was again on the field for over half of Cleveland's offensive plays, leading all receivers with 37 snaps (57% of the Browns' offensive plays). Veterans Diontae Johnson and Jamari Thrash, who are both vying for the Browns' third receiver spot, both got heavier workloads this week with 27 and 24 snaps, respectively. Starting receiver Cedric Tillman was active after not playing against Carolina and played 16 snaps. After rookies Dylan Sampson and Harold Fannin Jr. each played a very small amount of snaps in the preseason opener, neither player saw the field against Philadelphia, again a sign that the team could be preparing both players for serious roles on offense when the regular season arrives. Along the offensive line, second-year guard Zak Zinter made his return from injury and logged all 38 first-half snaps for the Browns, alongside Luke Wypler, Jackson Barton, and Teven Jenkins. Starting left tackle Dawand Jones got limited playing time, as he saw 21 snaps (32%). Defense It would've been hard to tell live because of how active he was, but defensive end Isaiah McGuire played just six snaps for the Browns on Saturday. The former fourth-round pick had two tackles and a sack in his limited action, and is a major reason why the Browns' defensive line depth looks so promising heading into the regular season. Along with McGuire, veteran pass-rusher Julian Okwara also had an impressive game, recording a second-half hit on former Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson that resulted in a pick-six. Okwara saw more playing time than his fellow standout defensive lineman, however, as he played 51% of the Browns' defensive snaps. Leading the pack on defense was linebacker Nathaniel Watson, who played a whopping 87% of the Browns' defensive snaps (41 plays), followed by safety Christopher Edmonds at 81%. Undrafted rookies Donovan McMillon and Easton Mascarenas-Arnold were the only other Browns to register over 60% of the defensive snaps at 79% and 77%, respectively. Each of the three players vying for the Browns' starting nickel spot again played a decent chunk of snaps, with veteran safety Nik Needham leading the pack at 23 snaps (49%). Cameron Mitchell and Myles Harden each played around a third of the team's defensive snaps, with 15 and 13 snaps respectively. Special teams Kicker Andre Szmyt saw his first action this preseason against the Eagles. Playing six snaps, Szmyt made all three of his kicks (two field goals with a long of 49, as well as an extra point). Dustin Hopkins played four snaps and made his only attempted kick of the day, a 46-yard field goal in the second quarter. Undrafted rookie defensive end Adin Huntington continued to play a big chunk of the Browns' special teams snaps – 10 of them this week – but he wasn't the team's leader this time around. That honor went to the aforementioned Donovan McMillan, who in addition to his heavy defensive workload played 14 snaps on special teams (58% of the Browns' special teams plays.) Okwara, Mascarenas-Arnold, and Needham also saw double-digit special teams snaps against the Eagles. Rookie running back Ahmani Marshall played nine special teams snaps in addition to his six carries for 25 yards on offense. Special teams ability alone won't get some of these players on the roster, but for players like Okwara and Marshall who have proven they can contribute in other areas too, those snaps could prove to be a difference-maker when it's time to cut down the roster. Browns report card: Positional grades in preseason win vs. Eagles
The Cleveland Browns secured their second preseason victory with a promising win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The team put together a solid overall performance, with some game-changing plays from key position groups. The offense started with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel under center for his NFL debut. Despite a lack of results on the scoreboard, the offense managed to produce 331 total yards. This only led to a few scoring drives, including a single touchdown, but it was enough to keep the Browns ahead of the Eagles for most of the game. Cleveland's defense was dominant on almost all fronts, particularly along the defensive line. Despite recording only one sack, the team held the Eagles' rushing attack to just 1.7 yards per carry and 33 total rushing yards. Linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold led the team with seven total tackles in what was another impressive showing from Jim Schwartz's defense. Let's now take a look at the grades for the Browns' position groups in their preseason victory against the Philadelphia Eagles: Quarterbacks: C- Dillon Gabriel got the starting nod while the Browns dealt with quarterback injuries, sidelining both Kenny Pickett and Shedeur Sanders. Gabriel's preseason debut featured some ups and downs, along with flashes of his playmaking ability. He finished 13-of-18 for 143 yards but also committed two turnovers. Despite the ugly stat line, he delivered some impressive throws and showed decent overall decision-making. Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley followed with another solid showing, completing 10 of his 13 passes. Like Gabriel, he failed to find the end zone but led some productive drives with sharp throws. It still appears unlikely that Huntley will stick in Cleveland, as he most likely showcased his talents for another NFL franchise. Overall, it was a good enough outing from the quarterbacks to secure the win. Running Backs: B+ A big chunk of the offensive production came from the run game. Pierre Strong Jr. led the team in both carries and rushing yards with an impressive performance. He finished with 89 rushing yards on 13 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. The other notable contributor was backup running back Ahmani Marshall, who quickly went to work with a four-yard touchdown on the Browns' opening drive. In total, he finished with 25 yards on just six carries. This final preseason game could decide the RB3 job between Strong Jr. and Marshall. Wide Receivers and Tight Ends: C+ It was another successful day for wide receivers Kaden Davis and Gage Larvadain, who each caught three passes and combined for 87 receiving yards following their strong performances last week. Both continue to fight for a spot on the final 53-man roster. Projected WR3 Jamari Thrash was also a key contributor with 43 yards on a team-leading four receptions. It was a quiet day for the tight ends. Sal Cannella led the group with three catches for 15 yards, but the lack of quarterback production didn't help their case. More will be needed from Cannella, Bates, and the rest of the group in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Offensive Line: B+ It was encouraging to see strong play from the Browns' depth along the offensive line. The group helped push the run game to 132 rushing yards while also producing some standout PFF grades. Guards Teven Jenkins and Javion Cohen stole the show with team-leading overall grades of 83.7 and 83.4. This puts second-year guard Zak Zinter in a tough position as he fights for a roster spot. Right tackle Jackson Barton and center Luke Wypler also impressed. Among 78 centers, Wypler currently holds the NFL's best preseason pass-blocking grade at 86.7. Barton posted a 75.6 pass-blocking grade against the Eagles' rush. Both played a respectable 39 snaps in the win. Defensive Line: A If you watched the game, you won't be surprised that the defensive line was the best unit of the day. One of the standouts was defensive end Isaiah McGuire, who notched two tackles and a sack on only six snaps. Fellow defensive end Julian Okwara added three tackles and a quarterback hit that forced an interception. The question isn't whether the Browns will keep talent along the defensive line—it's who they'll be forced to cut. With so much depth, several strong performers may not make the final roster. Linebackers: B The linebackers who needed a strong performance delivered. Easton Mascarenas-Arnold led the team with seven tackles, including one for loss, while Nathaniel Watson added four. Both are fighting for a roster spot and could be battling through the final preseason game. Veteran Jerome Baker also made the most of limited reps, recording two tackles and an 81.0 PFF grade in just 10 snaps. His roster spot seems secure, but others in the room still have work to do in the finale against the Rams. Defensive Backs: B+ Thanks in large part to the pass rush, it was a quiet but effective day for the secondary. The Browns allowed just 55 passing yards, one touchdown, and came away with an interception. Cornerback Nik Needham impressed with an 80.1 coverage grade on 28 snaps, while Christian Holmes led the group with an 85.9 grade on just four snaps. Strong safety Donovan McMillon also stood out for the second straight week, posting a 79.6 grade after earning a 69.2 against the Panthers. His emergence could create tough roster decisions for head coach Kevin Stefanski, who must weigh these preseason flashes when determining defensive back rotations for the regular season.
