Sports can be a growth engine for tourism: CM Chandrababu Naidu
On the second day of his Singapore visit on Monday, the Chief Minister, accompanied by renowned badminton coach Pullela Gopichand, ministers and senior officials, visited the Singapore Sports School.
Naidu emphasised that sports schools should evolve into centres that also drive entertainment, tourism and economic activity. He reiterated Andhra Pradesh's commitment to nurturing international-level athletes and outlined the State's incentive programmes for sportspersons.
The Chief Minister noted that the sports quota in government jobs has been increased from 2% to 3%, and financial rewards for athletes have been significantly enhanced. Olympic gold medalists are awarded `7 crore, silver medalists `5 crore and bronze medalists `3 crore. Medal winners at the Olympics and Asian Games are also eligible for prestigious Group-1 government jobs.
Naidu announced that a dedicated Sports City is being developed in Amaravati, with integrated sports complexes planned for Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Amaravati. Inspired by the Singapore Sports School, the State plans to establish similar institutions in Kadapa, Vijayawada and Vizianagaram.
Principal Ong Kim Soon shared that Singapore aims to become a global centre for sports excellence, with the Singapore Sports School playing a pivotal role. The school operates under a High-Performance Sports System, with world-class training infrastructure. Students are admitted from the age of 12 and offered academic flexibility alongside specialised sports training.
He said students showing genuine interest in sports are integrated into a structured pathway, developed in collaboration with national sports associations and academies.

NSFs to publish Games selection policy two years in advance: Mandaviya
New Delhi: With a view to encouraging transparency in selection for elite events such as Olympics and Asian Games, all sports federations are mandated to publish their selection policy two years in advance, union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Rajya Sabha in a written response on Thursday. (PTI) Almost all major National Sports Federations (NSFs) have complied with the directive with Badminton Association of India (BAI), Boxing Federation of India (BFI), and National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) making their selection criteria available on their website. Selection of the boxing team is done on the basis of an evaluation system where pugilists are judged on key parameters such as sparring, weight management, gym performance and running. NRAI relies on two-stage selection trials. The rankings are determined after four selection trials and the rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters are picked and slotted in Group A and B. Only the Group A shooters are considered for senior international events. The system worked well for India at last year's Paris Olympics where shooters ended an eight-year duck, claiming three medals. The same system was recently used to pick teams for Asian Championships and the junior and senior World Cups. Like NRAI, the badminton association too picks its teams from an elite core group that is 'formed in consultation with the department concerned of Sports Authority of India,' as per its website. 'For participation in international tournaments, entries of senior players are sent from the core group as per their BWF Ranking. Apart from above, for a few international tournaments, players are selected from sr ranking tournaments. These selection tournaments are declared in advance and put in website,' it states. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) too is largely in compliance. The squads are chosen on the basis of selection trials, and while it's way too early for WFI to announce the trials for next year's Asian Games, it has put out notifications for all international senior and age-group events on the website. 'We have been quite transparent with our policies. The wrestlers are notified well in advance and the same is uploaded on the website,' a WFI official said. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) picks teams based on athletes meeting entry standards or qualifying via the rankings route. 'All our policies are clearly mentioned on our website. We are among the first NSFs of the country to adopt such a transparent approach. Our directives to athletes are also put out well in advance to ensure there is no confusion,' AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla said. Mandaviya's statement also recalled the instructions released in March with respect to the selection for international meets, inclusion in coaching camps and selection of coaches and support staff. An important mandate from the ministry makes it mandatory for NSFs to record selection trials. 'Selection trials must be video recorded or monitored via CCTV. Recordings must be sent to SAI with minutes of the selection committee,' Mandaviya said. It is also mandatory for NSFs to have a Grievance Redressal Mechanism. 'It must be in place and grievances resolved within seven days. Grievance committees must be independent of the selection committee,' he stated.

Anahat, Abhay to highlight strong field for squash Nationals
New Delhi: Top tier Indian squash players, including junior World Championships bronze medallist Anahat Singh (world No.54) and Asian Championships doubles bronze medallist Abhay Singh (world No.35) will highlight the senior national championships that will be held in the capital's Major Dhyanchand Stadium from August 23 to 28. Multiple-time national champion Joshna Chinappa, national runner-up Akanksha Salunkhe and double Asian Games medallist (team) Tanvi Khanna have also confirmed participation. SRFI also announced a revamped India Squash Tour in partnership with HCL with a view to groom grassroots talent. While Tandon, Chotrani and Abhay will skip the Challenger level event, Anahat, who is transitioning to the senior circuit, is likely to play in at least one event. The Tour was held in Kolkata, Indore and Chennai last year with all events being $3,000 affairs. This year, it will move to five new cities – Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Delhi – while retaining Chennai in its six-city roster. There will be three $6,000, two $9,000 and one $15,000 events each for men and women in this year's calendar. Kicking off in Jaipur on August 4, the Tour will end in Delhi next February. 'Among the key objectives of the expansion is to give Indian players an opportunity to earn world ranking points,' Poncha said. Each leg will be a 24-player knock-out event with the top eight seeds receiving a bye into the second round. The $15k event will offer 1,343 ranking points with the winner getting 250 points. The $9k events will carry 806 points (150 for the winner) and the $6k events 537 points (100 for the winner). 'At least two Indian players will get wild card. For the $9k events, we are expecting players from the top 60-70 bracket while the $15k event in Chennai will have some top-30 players. It will be an excellent opportunity for Indian players to learn,' Poncha said.

Authorities abandon recovery of German Olympian killed in Pakistan
Authorities have abandoned efforts to recover the body of German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan this week. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said Thursday.(REUTERS) Dahlmeier was confirmed dead on Wednesday, having been hit by falling rocks while climbing at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said Thursday. In consultation with the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the agency said her relatives would "continue to monitor the situation... and are keeping the option of arranging a rescue at a later date". Several of Dahlmeier's colleages confirmed the two-time Olympic gold medallist had said she did not want her body recovered if it put any would-be rescuers at risk. German mountaineer Thomas Huber was part of a team who had attempted a rescue but told reporters on Thursday: "We have decided she should stay, because that was her wish." Another member of the rescue team, American Jackson Marvell told AFP it would be "disrespectful" to recover her body contrary to her wishes. Marvell said "the recovery of Laura's body will be possible, but it involves incredible risks, both on foot and by helicopter". Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Krauss, who was with her at the time of the incident, said at a press conference on Thursday the former Olympian did not move after being caught in a rockfall. "I saw Laura being hit by a huge rock and then being thrown against the wall. And from that moment on, she didn't move again," Krauss told reporters. Krauss said she was unable to reach Dahlmeier and called for outside support. "It was impossible for me to get there safely. "It was clear to me the only way to help her was to call a helicopter. She didn't move, she didn't show any signs (of movement). I called out to her, but there was no response." "She only had a chance if help arrived immediately," she said. Dahlmeier won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25.
