‘Believe yourself': how kids from a Madurai hamlet have taken over Insta
In the last two months, the Panchayat Union Middle school, Therkamoor in Madurai district, has been trending on social media showcasing its students' talents through reels. One of the reels that has taken Instagram by storm shows kids with their thumbs pointing to their chest, saying 'believe yourself'.
I.S. Sumathi, the teacher behind the videos, said the attention had brought them a lot of goodwill. Initially, she did not trust social media, and uploaded the videos on WhatsApp and her private Facebook account. Then, she stopped them shortly. She was not on Instagram.
A student named Sivadharshini and her siblings – Sivapandi and Subhashree — inspired her to start the page _.future_genius._ on Instagram. Started in 2022, the page today has nearly three lakh followers.
The teacher hasn't looked back since. Praises on the videos have been pouring in from all corners, including the School Education Minister, School Education Department officials, parents and children. 'I have gifted children around me who really studying. Five years ago, when some of them entered school, they would be teased a lot due to their short stature. Life has so much to offer, they should not get hurt and be held back in the village,' she told The Hindu over the phone.
A native of Thiruvetriyur from Ramanathapuram district, Ms. Sumathi wanted to expose the students to the world and make them more confident. 'Today, they are recognised all over. Not a single person in the school or village mocks them. They have gained so much respect. This has given us a lot of hope,' she added.
With handmade chart paper cut-outs of the school, stickers and drawing boards, Ms. Sumathi's reels are lesson activities. As the page gained more traction, offers to help also increased. The school has about 140 students; she thanks her principal and colleagues for their support in letting her upload the videos.
Sugabalan, a student of her class said, 'We like taking part in the videos and are very happy that our friends like Sivadarshini are getting recognised. School is so much fun.'
Stressing that she always ensures a fun and colourful environment in her classroom, the teacher said: 'This was how I learnt in my government school classroom, which I want to ensure that my students also receive. I only aim for my students to not forget what they have learnt in the classroom.'

Knowing that the structure is wooden' The firefighters lined up outside the family's home due to the smoke build-up. A third person also said, 'It's not cultural misunderstanding, it's nothing but forcing our culture on others and causing unnecessary attention from locals.' Some people also defended the family. In one such instance, a user said, "To all those abusing the family. You need to learn the basics. These people didn't hurt anyone or didn't do anything that harm people or property. They were having simple pooja. Now what about those people who use a grill in their garage and have smoke out of those.' A Hindu group from Canada called for sensitivity training for the local police and emergency services. 'Community needs to start engaging with local Police. Book a cultural sensitivity training of Police Services in your city,' they wrote.

Denmark zoo asks people to donate their small pets as food for captive predators
A zoo in Denmark is asking for donations of small pets as food for its predators. The Aalborg zoo said it is trying to mimic the natural food chain of the animals housed there 'for the sake of both animal welfare and professional integrity' and offers assurances the pets will be 'gently euthanised' by trained staff. The zoo in northern Denmark explained in a Facebook post that 'if you have a healthy animal that needs to be given away for various reasons, feel free to donate it to us.' The zoo points to guinea pigs, rabbits and chickens as possible donations. After being euthanised, the animals will be used as fodder, the zoo said. 'That way, nothing goes to waste — and we ensure natural behaviour, nutrition and well-being of our predators,' the zoo said. The online call for pet donations is accompanied by a picture of a wildcat baring its teeth with its mouth wide open and a link to the zoo's website, noting the facility is also interested in receiving horses. The zoo, which could not immediately be reached for additional details, does not list other pets or animals as possible donations.

Dasara: Elephants and staff insured for ₹2 crore
The elephants for Mysuru Dasara-2025, their mahouts, and kavadis have been insured for a sum of ₹2 crore. The Forest Department officials and the staff, who are associated with the management and training of elephants, are also covered under the insurance, in addition to all 14 elephants that are going to be part of the Dasara festivities, which will commence in September. In total, 43 have been given the insurance cover. Confirming this to The Hindu, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Prabhu Gowda said, 'A premium of ₹67,000 has been paid towards the insurance cover, which has been given by The New India Assurance Company Limited. The insurance policy provides coverage for damages to public as well as private properties.' Mr. Gowda said all nine elephants led by Abhimanyu arrived in the city on Monday around 6 p.m., and are camping at the Aranya Bhavan here. Earlier in the day, the Gajapayana of the elephants was held at Veeranahosahalli, and the jumbos were transported in trucks to Mysuru after a grand event.
