Singapore: 65-Year-Old Man Found Dead at Foot of Punggol HDB Block

A 65-year-old man was found dead on Sunday, July 6, at the foot of an HDB block in Punggol in a reported relationship dispute.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that it received a call for assistance at Block 654C Punggol Drive at about 5.55 am.
The deceased, who was found motionless at the foot of the block, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defense Force paramedic.
However, the police do not suspect foul play, based on preliminary investigations.
Shin Min Daily News was notified by a reader that there was a blue tent at the base of the block.
The tent was situated on a grass verge adjacent to the block, and two police officers were also spotted standing close to it.
No bloodstains were seen at the scene, despite the fact that some of the nearby trees' branches were broken.
A local resident informed the reporters that the deceased was a Chinese uncle, but they were unaware of any other information.

Singapore U-16 boys fall to bitter defeat in Lion City Cup opener

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Under-16 boys were undone by a pair of counter-attacking goals as they were defeated 2-0 by the Philippines in their Lion City Cup (LCC) opener at the Jalan Besar Stadium on July 9. Despite having the lion share of the possession and goal attempts, the Singaporeans could not finish off their opponents. And they were left to rue their wasteful display when the visitors grabbed the lead in the 64th minute against the run of play through substitute Joshua Gabriel Moleje, before Lawrence Binalong sealed the win with five minutes to go. Singapore U-16 coach Ashraf Ariffin admitted his boys lacked composure in front of goal, despite controlling the match. 'They competed from start to finish, (which is) something I wanted to see (and) held their heads high towards the end. 'It's not just the poor finishing. I think the composure in front of goal could be better, while our transition, organisation in defence (could be better). But this will come along and it's something that we are looking to improve in the next game (against Cambodia on July 11).' He is confident the players, who were 'comfortable and brave with the ball', will get better with more games under their belt. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The more exposure, the more games we get at this level, will only develop them further.' The match began at a frantic pace, with Singapore having the first shot on goal when Lukyan Tan stung the palms of Philippine goalkeeper Reign Lewis Deomampo in the sixth minute. Singapore continued to pile on the pressure, but could not find the breakthrough at the break against the resolute Filipinos, much to the delight of the small group of fans who out-shouted the local supporters. The second half started in the same fashion as the first as the Singaporeans created a host of clear chances in the early phases, with a goal seemingly imminent. However, it was the Philippines who stunned the hosts when Joshua beat the offside trap and, with goalkeeper Ilhan Rezal stranded, chipped the ball into an empty net. Singapore responded with more urgency as substitute Darius Lai, who had come on shortly after the goal, dragged his shot wide. But Lawrence hit the sucker punch with a well-taken goal on the break to dash Singaporean hopes. Joshua, who was named Player of the Match, said: 'It was lucky for us to get two beautiful goals from counter-attacks. For us Filipinos, we just have that fighting spirit to really work hard.' His coach, Japanese Tetsuya Tsuchida, added: '(Our) players played and fought hard. But it's still only one game.' In the day's earlier kick-off, Hong Kong beat Cambodia 2-0. The team who are top after the single round-robin stage will be crowned champions. Singapore's U-16 girls will be in action again on July 10 against Hong Kong as they seek to bounce back from their opening 9-0 drubbing by South Korea. All matches are played at the Jalan Besar Stadium with Singapore's games kicking off at 8pm.

S'pore golfer Shannon Tan rested and ready for first Major test of the season

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Singaporean golfer Shannon Tan has won one event and claimed another four top-10 finishes on the Ladies European Tour in 2025. SINGAPORE – Victory at the German Masters on June 29 saw Shannon Tan pick up a cheque for €45,000 (S$67,500). But the Singaporean golfer also earned another cherished reward – a well-deserved break. To celebrate her second Ladies European Tour (LET) career title, she spent five days in London to rest and recover, a priority for her this season, while tucking into some of her favourite Singaporean dishes like bak chor mee and har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken). After that, it was back to work as the 21-year-old prepares for the Evian Championship, her first Major of the season. She said: 'Something I've learnt this year is how important rest is. Taking short breaks here and there has really helped me stay fresh.' It is a significant shift from her debut season on the LET in 2024, when she played 29 events, including the Magical Kenya Ladies Open where she recorded her maiden title, which eventually led to her feeling burnt out and fatigued. Towards the end of the season, she began experiencing pain in her right elbow, later traced to a tight rotator cuff in her shoulder. To avoid a repeat, Tan has trimmed her schedule this season to 22 or 23 tournaments. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. It is no surprise then that she feels more prepared heading into the Evian Championship, which takes place from July 10 to 13. The French tournament, staged at the Evian Resort Golf Club's Champions Course in Evian-les-Bains, will be Tan's third appearance at a Major. While she missed the cut in her first outing in 2024, she progressed to the weekend at the Women's British Open later that year, becoming only the second Singaporean to do so, after Lam Chih Bing. She said: 'Playing in the Majors last year was a huge learning experience. Just being in that environment, competing alongside some of the world's best golfers and tackling tougher course set-ups, taught me a lot. 'Majors demand full focus on every single shot and they really expose the areas of your game that need improvement. That helped me understand where I needed to get better. 'Since then, I've worked hard on my short game and tightened up other parts of my game that weren't as sharp last year.' Tan heads into the US$8 million (S$10.2 million) tournament with confidence, following a strong 2025 season so far. Besides the title in Germany, she has recorded four other top-10 finishes and missed the cut just once in 11 LET events. Her consistency has propelled her into the top 100 of the world rankings, where she now sits 95th. She said: 'That win (in Germany) meant a lot to me. I had been in contention for a few weeks in a row but couldn't quite close it out, so to finally get over the line felt like a breakthrough. 'It's definitely given me a bit more confidence, and I hope to carry that momentum into this week.' Evian Resort will be familiar ground for Tan, who finished runner-up at the Jabra Ladies Open on the same course in May. However, she acknowledged at the time that 'the course will also likely be set up differently for a Major'. Asked which parts of the course might play to her strengths and where the biggest challenges lie, Tan said her ball-striking and tee-to-green play will be an advantage, especially with the thick rough. Her short game has been a key area of focus this season. Besides working closely with her coach, she recently made a switch from graphite to steel shafts in her wedges just before the German Masters – a change that has already paid dividends. She highlighted that the biggest test will be around the greens and managing approach shots into some of the more demanding pin positions. While she hopes to improve on her Major performances from 2024, Tan emphasised that her goals are not result-based. Progress, she notes, is not just measured in results. One standout improvement is her scrambling – the ability to save par after missing the green in regulation – which has gone up from 39 per cent last season to 52 per cent this term. With her eyes set on competing on the LPGA Tour, Tan is encouraged by the strides she is making. She said: 'Yes, I definitely feel like I'm on the right track. I've been focusing on improving specific areas of my game and becoming more consistent, and I'm starting to see that progress show up in competition. 'That (scrambling) was a big area I wanted to work on, and seeing real improvement there gives me a lot of confidence moving forward.'

Vatican could host Russia-Ukraine peace talks, Pope Leo tells Zelensky

The Pope, meeting the Ukrainian leader for the second time in his two-month-old papacy, also discussed with Mr Zelensky 'the urgent need for a just and lasting peace', the statement said. Mr Zelensky and Pope Leo held talks in Castel Gandolfo, a small Italian hill town not far from Rome, where the Pope is taking a two-week vacation. The Ukrainian leader is in Italy to attend a conference on July 10 to 11 dedicated to Ukraine's recovery and long-term reconstruction following Russia's invasion. The Vatican did not say how long the meeting between Pope Leo and Mr Zelensky lasted. It released a video showing Pope Leo, the first US pontiff, asking Mr Zelensky, 'How are things going?' in English as the two sat in a large room together. Pope Leo, who has made appealing for peace in world conflicts a major theme of his young papacy, previously met Mr Zelensky at the Vatican on May 18. The Pope also held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4, during which the Vatican said he had asked Mr Putin to take concrete steps to end Russia's bloody three-year war on Ukraine.
