All eyes on Gagasan Rakyat as it holds AGM
Gagasan Rakyat, the anchor party of the ruling eight-party state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), is expected to decide if GRS will go solo or solidify its current partnership with Pakatan Harapan.
Over 2,000 delegates from 74 divisions are expected to attend the annual meeting led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also Sabah Chief Minister.
Gagasan Rakyat insiders are not expecting an outright resolution but the grassroots will likely give Hajiji and party supreme council members the mandate to decide on the party's stand for the coming Sabah Election, which is due by Nov 11.
Hajiji has spoken in favour of continuing its electoral pact with Sabah Pakatan but said that any decision would have the consensus of others in GRS.
He has said he had talked to Pakatan leaders including Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a possible electoral pact.
Coalition partner Sabah STAR, led by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, wants GRS to go solo or at the very least, to give Pakatan a minimal number of seats and to contest under the GRS logo.
Another partner, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), led by acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said GRS should be the dominant party in any electoral pact and also said it would not have a pact with Barisan Nasional.
Gagasan Rakyat holds the most seats in GRS with 26, while PBS and Sabah STAR hold 13 seats between them. GRS has a total of 42 seats, including those of other partners.
Officiated by Hajiji, Gagasan Rakyat's AGM will kick off with a special seminar to be attended by over 400 division members, including from the women's, youth and women's youth wings.
The three wings will hold their annual meetings on Saturday (July 26) followed by the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday (July 27).

Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan BTC Berhad Datuk Abdul Kadir M.E. Sikkandar, said the current administration has created a conducive environment for business growth and investor confidence. He highlighted the government's commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and people-centric development, stating that Sabah today stands on a strong foundation. 'With continued leadership under Hajiji I am confident Sabah will scale even greater heights. 'Political uncertainty continues to challenge other parts of the country, but Sabah has emerged as a model of calm, unity and steady progress,' he said. Abdul Kadir said Kumpulan BTC Berhad, a homegrown company, has grown significantly under the current administration and now employs over 800 Sabahans across various sectors. He attributed the expansion to the state's stable political climate and pro-business policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'The SMJ Plan has reenergised key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and renewable energy. Meanwhile, prominent businessman Tan Sri TC Goh said the GRS government's economic stewardship has yielded remarkable results. 'The Government's success is underscored by a dramatic increase in state revenue: nearly RM7 billion annually for 2022, 2023, and 2024 – a significant leap from RM3.5 billion in 2020,' Goh said. This growth, Goh said, mirrored a robust rise in Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), climbing from RM83.2 billion in 2023 to RM84.3 billion in 2024, coupled with a substantial increase in state reserves to RM8.6 billion. He said these figures demonstrate a healthy and thriving economy, directly attributable to the GRS government's effective management. GRS reaffirms support for MADANI government under Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has reiterated its support for the Madani government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor stated that this decision stems from the federal government's responsiveness to Sabah's demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji, who is also Sabah's Chief Minister, highlighted that many of the state's requests had been approved and implemented, benefiting the people. 'I would like to reiterate that GRS remains supportive of the Prime Minister. Many of our initiatives and demands under MA63 have been approved by him,' he said during his winding-up speech at the Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly. He contrasted the current administration's cooperation with past difficulties in securing approvals. 'Previously, it was very difficult to devolve powers or approve our requests... if the Madani Government is good for our state, why wouldn't we support it?' Hajiji added. The shift in GRS's support came after dissatisfaction with the previous federal government's stance on the 'Borneo Bloc' concept. 'I was shocked by those remarks... I reflected on it for a long time and eventually lost heart in them,' Hajiji explained. Pakatan eyes 25 seats in polls pact with GRS
KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan aims to contest up to 25 seats in an electoral pact with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said he expected the seat distribution to be ironed out soon. 'It has to be discussed with GRS, mainly PGRS (Gagasan Rakyat). We welcome the cooperation. The next step is to discuss seats,' he said after the Gagasan Rakyat annual general assembly here yesterday. Mustapha said Sabah Pakatan would like to contest between 23 and 25 of the 73 seats up for grabs. Sabah PKR won two seats – Inanam and Api Api – in the 2020 state election. It was earlier reported that PKR was eyeing between 13 and 18 seats, with Amanah seeking five, DAP six to eight and Upko up to eight. Mustapha said the pact with GRS was a positive development for political stability in Sabah. 'I want to thank the chief minister for upholding cooperation between GRS and Pakatan. As a Pakatan leader, I welcome it. I think it is good for Sabah and Sabahans,' he added.
