London considers what improvements can be made to snow removal within the city

London city hall received a flurry of complaints last winter about snow removal, but an internal review has put many of those concerns on ice.
The city received a flurry of complaints last winter about snow removal, but an internal review has put many of those concerns on ice.
Last winter was London's second snowiest of the last 30 years.
City staff have committed to improving communications, technology, and administering snow clearing contracts this winter.
'For us to say, 'Oh yes, we're going to improve and here's how much it's going to cost.' How are we going to measure that improvement in a way? What standard are we going to hold ourselves to? As you know, we tried this in the past when it came to sidewalk maintenance and we saw the same or more levels of concern in the community,' said Coun. Corrine Rahman.
They do not recommend improving how quickly ice is removed from sidewalks though, citing the mayor's tax target.

Lawnmower sparks two-acre grass fire in Oro-Medonte

Fire crews respond to a grass fire on Line 15 north in Oro-Medonte, Ont. on Thurs., Aug. 14, 2025. A lawn mowing job turned into a fast-moving grass fire in Oro-Medonte, burning about two acres before firefighters managed to bring it under control. According to Oro-Medonte Fire Chief Roree Payment, the blaze started on Line 15 north when a lawnmower struck a rock, creating a spark that ignited the dry, brittle grass. Firefighters from several stations responded, using leaf blowers and a brush truck to stop the flames from spreading further. Crews also worked in sweltering heat, with tanker 1 covering Station 2 to ensure other calls could still be handled. (Roree Payment/Oro-Medonte Fire Department/X) Chief Payment called efforts to bring the situation under control 'a well-coordinated attack.' While grass fires aren't unusual, Payment noted the risk is currently higher than normal given the prolonged dry conditions and lack of rain in the area. 'Normal activities in less dry conditions can often be done without much thought,' the fire chief said. 'But in these dryer conditions, more care should be taken.' He further praised crews for their 'great hustle' in containing the fire quickly. No injuries were reported and no structures damaged. A fire ban is currently in effect in Oro-Medonte, prohibiting any open air burning and fireworks.

Float for free at Port Stanley

Beach visitors at Port Stanley now have access to free lifejackets through a program launched by Central Elgin. The municipality collaborated with the Elgin County Drowning Prevention Coalition, as an effort to make the water more accessible and safer for beachgoers. Lifejackets are available in a range of sizes from adult, youth, child and infant, and can be borrowed at no cost. 'It's really great that we can offer that to anyone who wants to swim and wants to engage in our beautiful beach here but just gives that extra layer of safety to make sure that everyone can return home at the end of the day,' said Briar McCaw, Elgin County Drowning Prevention Coalition Co-Chair. To borrow a lifejacket, visit the central lifeguarding tower on Main Beach, present a piece of ID and sign a waiver. A lifeguard will assist with finding the right size, and the lifejackets are first-come, first-served. The program operates during lifeguard hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan said the program makes the beach accessible to even more people. 'I like to say we have the best beach on Lake Erie. I'd also like it to be the safest,' said Sloan.
