The Winnipeg Police Service is investigating after a woman was attacked on a bike path at Assiniboine Park over the weekend.
Police were called to the area just east of the park's Roblin Boulevard entrance at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Officers allege a 25-year-old woman was assaulted while walking east on Roblin near Commissary Road. Police said the suspect continued the attack while demanding money until several witnesses intervened. The suspect left the scene before police arrived.
The suspect involved in the attack is described as a heavy-set man who was wearing a dark jacket with the hood up, a dark baseball hat, charcoal-coloured sweatpants, glasses or sunglasses, and black shoes.
Police brought in on medical call
However, officers were called back to the area at around 5:30 p.m.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was already there for a medical call involving a man who matched the description of the suspect in the previous assault.
The man was taken to the hospital in stable condition and identified as the suspect. No charges have been laid, but the man remains in custody on the strength of an unrelated unendorsed warrant.
Anyone who may have encountered this man at the time of the attack or who has any information about the incident, including pictures or videos, is asked to contact police at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
The investigation continues, but there is no concern for public safety

Three men arrested in ‘chaotic' fight

A Barrie police car at the scene of an investigation in this undated file image. Police in Barrie arrested and charged three men after responding to a fight in the south end of the city Tuesday night. According to the Barrie Police Service (BPS), officers received a report about two men fighting near Mapleview Drive East and Huronia Road, and that weapons might have been involved. One of the men was arrested as soon as the officers arrived at the scene, and police say he made threats toward the officers as they were taking him into custody. The second man allegedly fled into a wooden area before being located and arrested by the BPS Canine Unit. Additional information police say they obtained involved a third man and a woman who were unknown, and that they may have taken two of the first man's children. Police say the officers eventually ended up at a home on Shalom Way where they found the children unharmed and arrested the third man and woman. Then, due to what police describe as 'complex' issues prior to and after their arrest, the duo was hospitalized for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation continued with the help of detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division. Through the information they gathered, police say they learned that the four adults were all known to each other, spending that afternoon together before deciding to walk to a convenience store with the children. Police later confirmed that the initial fight was found to be consensual, and no weapons were involved. However, a spokesperson from the BPS told CTV News that alcohol was 'more than likely' a contributing factor. The two men in the initial fight were each charged with two counts of causing a disturbance by fighting. The first man was also charged with two counts of uttering threats for his alleged actions toward the arresting officers. The third man who was found at the Shalom Way home was charged with two counts of obstructing police and was held for a bail hearing. The woman was released unconditionally.
