Google says AI is making searching and browsing the web safer

Almost anyone who has used the internet has probably experienced that alarming moment when a window pops up claiming your device has a virus, encouraging you to click for tech support or download security software. It's a common online scam, and one that Google is aiming to fight more aggressively using artificial intelligence.
Google says it's now using a version of its Gemini AI model that runs on users' devices to detect and warn users of these so-called 'tech support' scams.
It's just one of a number of ways Google is using advancements in AI to better protect users from scams across Chrome, Search and its Android operating system, the company said in a blog post Thursday.
The announcement comes as AI has enabled bad actors to more easily create large quantities of convincing, fake content — effectively lowering the barrier to carrying out scams that can be used to steal victims' money or personal information. Consumers worldwide lost more than $1 trillion to scams last year, according to the lobbying group Global Anti-Scam Alliance. So, Google and other organizations are increasingly using AI to fight scammers, too.
Phiroze Parakh, senior director of engineering for Google Search, said that fighting scammers 'has always been an evolution game,' where bad actors learn and evolve as tech companies put new protections in place.
'Now, both sides have new tools,' Parakh said in an interview with CNN. 'So, there's this question of, how do you get to use this tool more effectively? Who is being a little more proactive about it?'
Although Google has long used machine learning to protect its services, newer AI advancements have led to improved language understanding and pattern recognition, enabling the tech to identify scams faster and more effectively.
Google said that on Chrome's 'enhanced protection' safe browsing mode on desktop, its on-device AI model can now effectively scan a webpage in real-time when a user clicks on it to look for potential threats. That matters because, sometimes, bad actors make their pages appear differently to Google's existing crawler tools for identifying scams than they do to users, a tactic called 'cloaking' that the company warned last year was on the rise.
And because the model, called Gemini Nano, runs on your device, the service works faster and protects users' privacy, said Jasika Bawa, group product manager for Google Chrome.
As with Chrome's existing safe browsing mode, if a user attempts to access a potentially unsafe site, they'll see a warning before being given the option to continue to the page.
In another update, Google will warn Android users if they're receiving alerts from fishy sites in Chrome and let them automatically unsubscribe, so long as they have Chrome website notifications enabled.
Google has also used AI to detect scammy results and prevent them from showing up in Search, regardless what kind of device users are on. Since Google Search first launched AI-powered versions of its anti-scam systems three years ago, it now blocks 20 times the number of problematic pages.
'We've seen this incredible advantage with our ability to understand language and nuance and relationships between entities that really made a change in how we detect these scammy actors,' he said, adding that in 2024 alone, the company removed hundreds of millions of scam search results daily because of the AI advancements.
Parakh said, for example, that AI has made it better able to identify and remove a scam where bad actors create fake 'customer service' pages or phone numbers for airlines. Google says it has has now decreased scam attacks in airline-related searches by 80%.
Google isn't the only company using AI to fight bad actors. British mobile phone company O2 said last year it was fighting phone scammers with 'Daisy,' a conversational AI chatbot meant to keep fraudsters on the phone, giving them less time to talk with would-be human victims. Microsoft has also piloted a tool that uses AI to analyze phone conversations to determine whether a call may be fraudulent and alert the user accordingly. And the US Treasury Department said last year that AI had helped it identify and recover $1 billion worth of check fraud in fiscal 2024 alone.

Its fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain comes with either front- or all-wheel drive, and the engine noise while accelerating is really the only disturbance to an otherwise tranquil cabin experience. With its superior fuel economy and flawless execution of all the minivan fundamentals, the Sienna is among our favorite vans, beating out stiff competition like the Honda Odyssey and Kia Carnival and trailing only the quirky and electric Volkswagen What's New for 2026? After a light interior refresh brought an updated infotainment suite, an Advanced Rear Seat Reminder feature, and some upgraded wireless charging tech last year, the Sienna carries over into 2026 unchanged. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Toyota Sienna is expected to start around $41,000 and go up to $58,000 depending on the trim and options. LE $41,000 (est) XLE $46,000 (est) XSE $49,000 (est) Limited $52,000 (est) Woodland Edition $52,000 (est) Platinum $58,000 (est) We'd go for the XSE model, which comes with sport seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, second-row captain's chairs, and Toyota's "one-motion-stow" third row. Other tweaks include 20-inch wheels, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, and tauter suspension. The XSE, like all Sienna trims, comes standard with front-wheel drive, but adding all-wheel drive costs less than $1000 and seems like a worthwhile upgrade to us. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Sienna has been offered exclusively as a hybrid since its 2021 redesign. Its powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors that make a combined 245 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available across the lineup and features a third electric motor that drives the rear wheels but doesn't increase total output. The Sienna delivers an uninspiring driving experience but, importantly, it aces ride comfort without going too far toward the soft end of the spectrum. 0–60-MPH Times An all-wheel-drive Sienna Limited we tested required 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph. For context, that's quicker than the Pacifica Hybrid, the same as the Kia Carnival's time, and behind the hot rod of the segment, the Honda Odyssey. View Exterior Photos Toyota Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released fuel economy information for the 2026 Sienna yet, but without any significant changes, the newest model should deliver similar fuel economy to last year's model. The front-drive 2025 Sienna stood as the segment's thriftiest people hauler, with EPA fuel-economy estimates of 36 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. Adding all-wheel drive reduced the city metric by 1 mpg. Over 40,000 miles, our all-wheel-drive Platinum long-term test vehicle averaged 29 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Toyota packed tons of storage into the Sienna's interior, the centerpiece of which is a large center console that stretches from the dashboard to the start of the second row, with a sizable open storage cubby underneath. There are also 18 cupholders scattered about the cabin. Frequent haulers of cargo may be disappointed to learn that the Sienna's second-row seats are not removable like those in the Odyssey and the Pacifica Hybrid. As a consolation prize of sorts, the second-row captain's chairs can slide a total of 25 inches fore and aft, providing either maximum legroom for either of the rear rows or more cargo space behind the second row. The cargo area behind the third row measures 34 cubic feet compared to the Kia Carnival's 40 cubes. Limited and Platinum models feature reclining second-row seats with pop-up ottomans, and an onboard vacuum cleaner and fridge are available on the Limited and standard on the Platinum trim. View Interior Photos Toyota Infotainment and Connectivity The Sienna LE's infotainment touchscreen measures 8.0 inches, while all other models get a 12.3-inch display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity features are all standard, as is an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and SiriusXM satellite radio. A smattering of USB-C ports dot the van's cabin, and there's a USB-A port in the console for older devices. The base stereo is a 6-speaker setup, and XLE models get eight speakers. A 12-speaker JBL stereo system is optional on the XLE and XSE and standard on the Limited and Platinum. In-dash navigation is standard starting with the XSE trim; a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display is optional on all but the base LE model. A 7.0-inch instrument cluster display is nestled between analog gauges on LE and XLE models, while upper trims get a fully digital gauge cluster. A head-up display is available and is standard on Platinum. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Ten airbags, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert, and Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 bundle of driver-assistance features are standard on the Sienna, while convenience items such as parking sensors and a 360-degree exterior camera system are optional. Generative AI adoption started in late 2022 with public adoption of models like ChatGPT and Llama. As it drives towards its next phase of value creation with reasoning, also referred to as agentic AI, it has recently crossed the boundary from a consumer-centric application into an enterprise application. Right on the heels of this adoption is also another phase of value creation – Sovereign AI. What Is Sovereign AI? Sovereign AI refers to artificial intelligence that is developed, maintained, and controlled within a specific nation's or organization's jurisdiction, ensuring independence from external influences. This artificial intelligence is designed to align with local regulations, ethical standards, and strategic priorities, allowing governments and enterprises to maintain autonomy over their AI-driven operations. The Opportunity To Reign Supreme (Or At Least Be At The Front Of The Pack) Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently stated that 'AI is now an essential form of national infrastructure – just like energy, telecommunications and the internet.' Indeed, many leading countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, China, France, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates have launched sovereign AI initiatives. Stargate is an example of such an initiative from the United States. Additionally, leading AI enablers like Nvidia and OpenAI, have initiatives targeted specifically at helping entities establish their own sovereign AI capabilities. Sovereign AI is particularly crucial in areas like national security, defense, and critical infrastructure, where reliance on foreign AI models could pose risks related to data privacy, cybersecurity, or geopolitical dependencies. By building and maintaining custom AI capabilities, nations and organizations can safeguard their technological sovereignty while fostering innovation tailored to their unique needs. Moving Forward With Sovereign AI While this is a gross oversimplification of how complicated this task is for national leaders to undertake, the following are some critical areas that must be addressed in embarking on the sovereign AI journey: To this end, AI enablers like Nvidia and leading countries such as France have started to organize events. For example, at the upcoming Viva Technology event in Paris this coming June, Jensen Huang and Nvidia have organized a dedicated GTC event where interested parties can learn more. As mentioned earlier, it is important to keep in mind that sovereign AI isn't necessarily limited to national entities. Any sufficiently capable entity, whether they be nations, companies, organizations or universities interested in securing their own AI systems and capabilities from data curation and model creation to specified and focused outcomes can take advantage of sovereign AI.

The introduction of generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) marked a significant milestone in the adoption and utility of artificial intelligence in the real world. The technology was created by the then fledgling research lab OpenAI, based on previous research done on transformers in 2017 by Google Labs. It was Google's white paper "Attention is all you need", which laid the foundation for OpenAI's work on the GPT concept. As seen in > Model matchup surprise > ChatGPT announcements > Goodbye ChatGPT-4 > Why ChatGPT 4.1 is a big deal Transformers provided AI scientists with an innovative method of taking user input, and converting it to something that could be used by the neural network using an attention mechanism to identify important parts of the data. This architecture also allows for the information to be processed in parallel rather than sequentially as with traditional neural networks. This provides a huge and critical improvement in speed and efficiency of AI processing. OpenAI's GPT architecture was released in 2018 with GPT-1. By significantly refining Google's transformer ideas, the GPT model demonstrated that large-scale unsupervised learning could produce an extremely capable text generation model which operated at vastly improved speeds. GPT's also uprated the neural networks' understanding of context which improved accuracy and provided human-like coherence. Before GPT, AI language models relied on rule-based systems or simpler neural networks like recurrent neural networks (RNNs), which struggled with long-range dependencies and contextual understanding. The story of the GPT architecture is one of constant incremental improvements ever year since launch. GPT-2 in 2019 introduced a model with 1.5 billion parameters, which started to provide the kind of fluent text responses where AI users are now familiar with. However it was the introduction of GPT-3 (and subsequently 3.5) in 2020 which was the real game-changer. It featured 175 billion parameters, and suddenly a single AI model could cope with a vast array of applications from creative writing to code generation. GPT technology went viral in November of 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT. Based on GPT 3.5 and later GPT-4, this astonishing technology instantly propelled AI into public consciousness in a massive way. Unlike previous GPT models, ChatGPT was fine-tuned for conversational interaction. Suddenly business users and ordinary citizens could use an AI for things like customer service, online tutoring or technical support. So powerful was this idea, that the product attracted a 100 million users in a mere 60 days. Today GPT is one of the top two AI system architectures in the world (along with Google's Gemini). Recent improvements have included multimodal capabilities, i.e. the ability to process not just text but also images, video and audio. OpenAI has also updated the platform to improve pattern recognition and enhance unsupervised learning, as well as adding agentic functionality via semi-autonomous tasks. On the commercial front, GPT powered applications are now deeply embedded in many different business and industry enterprises. Salesforce has Einstein GPT to deliver CRM functionality, Microsoft's Copilot is an AI assisted coding tool which incorporates Office suite automation, and there are multiple healthcare AI models which are fine-tuned to provide GPT powered diagnosis, patient interaction and medical research. At the time of writing the only two significant rivals to the GPT architecture are Google's Gemini system and the work being done by DeepSeek, Anthropic's Claude and Meta with its Llama models. The latter products also use transformers, but in a subtly different way to GPT. Google however is a dark horse in the race, as it's becoming clear that the Gemini platform has the potential to dominate the global AI arena within a few short years. Despite the competition, OpenAI remains firmly at the top of many leaderboards in terms of AI performance and benchmarks. Its growing range of reasoning models such as o1 and o3, and its superlative image generation product, GPT Image-1 which uses the technology, continue to demonstrate that there is significant life left in the architecture, waiting to be exploited.
