Our favorite product releases this week: Calpak, Rad Power Bikes, Satechi and more

CNN02-05-2025

There are a ton of great products that drop every week — and we're here, as always, to keep you up to date on the best of them. Each week, we'll be rounding up a short list of our favorite product drops from the last seven days for you to shop as you sip your morning coffee or take a quick break from work (trust, it's the only list you need for staying up to date on these things).
This week brings the launch of a new miniature Calpak duffel bag, a refreshed lineup of Rad Power cargo e-bikes and the long-awaited debut of the latest portable Satechi MagSafe chargers.
Qi2 tech wrapped in eco-friendly vegan leather
Satechi first revealed a new lineup of chargers back at CES 2025. This week, they're finally beginning to ship. Two versions of the OntheGo series are now available, with a 2-in-1 charger made for iPhone and Apple Watch being joined by a model that can also power up AirPods at the same time.
Our senior deals editor, Rikka Altland, got her hands on the new OntheGo 3-in-1 Charger and has been using it for the past few days. Based on a few nights of use, it certainly seems to meet the Qi2 spec for fast charging times. She also loves the feel of the vegan leather that wraps up all the charging prowess.
The best part about this week's Satechi launches are the introductory price drops. Amazon is celebrating the debut by discounting both of the chargers: The base OntheGo charger drops to $72 from its usual $80 price tag and the more capable 3-in-1 version hits $90 following a discount from its typical $100 MSRP.
The viral brush gets a new rendition
Tangle Teezer, the hairbrush brand used by celebrity hairstylists, just introduced a newcomer for delicately working out knots without sacrificing hairstyles. Many of us at CNN Underscored rep the brand, noting that it speeds up detangling and flexes seamlessly over tangles. We could even blindly pick the distinct Tangle Teezer brush out of a lineup of other hair brushes. Now, there's a new version hitting the market.
The new Extra Gentle option caters to fragile, breakage-prone hair. Outside its concentrated center of teeth for detangling, the latest brush is designed with widely spaced teeth to cause less breakage in fine, damaged hair types. Good news for Tangle Teezer fans, it lingers at the same price as its predecessors at $16.
The brand just downsized its bestselling bag
It's no surprise that CNN Underscored editors adore Calpak's Luka Collection. The bags are roomy, lightweight and have a scratch-resistant exterior that's perfect for lugging to the gym or on your next flight as a carry-on. If you've wanted a version better suited for toting around everyday essentials, you're in luck. The brand just released a miniature version of the popular duffel that rings in at just over one pound and has a 14-liter capacity.
The new Calpak Mini Luka Duffel comes in Matte Black, Chocolate, Oatmeal and Rose Quartz colors and enters with a reasonable $88 price tag. After trying it, you'll see how convenient this bag is for farmers market runs or throwing over your shoulder when rushing to pilates classes.
Improved versions of bestselling e-bikes
Rad Power's RadRunner series just narrowly missed out on making the cut in our best e-bikes guide. A single-speed drivetrain was the main downside, something that limited the RadRunner 2 that we tested to flatter terrain. This week, the company has revealed a refreshed RadRunner lineup complete with quality of life improvements and an entirely new Class 3 model to solve that drivetrain issue.
The company's bestselling utility e-bike series all sport sturdy frames and fat tires to accommodate heavy cargo loads from grocery story trips or even a second passenger via a child's seat. Now they're even better with enhanced weather protection, rear-facing radar detection and a new digital key security. Pricing for the lineup of three new e-bikes starts at $1,499.
Circling back to the new Class 3 model, the RadRunner Max directly addresses our issues with the company's placement in our e-bike guide. This new and improved bike has five levels of pedal-assist and the ability to hit 28 mph top speeds. There's a new torque sensor for evening out rides and a 'Feather Pedal' feature to mimic the smooth acceleration of a car. My favorite part is the new 'RADar' sensor that provides extra peace of mind while cycling. It can notify the rider with an alert on the handlebar-mounted display when a vehicle is approaching from behind without having to take your eyes off the road.
A lightweight pigment formulated to even skin undertones
Jones Road has done it again. The brand helmed by makeup artist Bobbi Brown added to its curation of unique formulations, like the Miracle Balm and the What the Foundation. Debuting in 16 shades, the Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer conceals redness and uneven skin tones with a sheer wash of pigment, while humectants help protect the skin's moisture barrier from water loss, per the brand. All shades are formulated to target different skin undertones too, from pink, neutral, yellow, red and golden. With warming temps, its light finish is fit for summer, priced at $44.
This genderless perfume will be your go-to summer scent
Committing to a perfume has never been easier. This roller bottle is less than one ounce, which makes it portable for nights out on the town and slim enough for throwing into a compact purse. The new Wonder Valley Hinoki Roller scent gives off gentle undertones of smoke and tree bark for a sensual smell and is sure to turn heads when wearing it. The fragrance is essential oil-based, making it easy to roll on and sink into the skin. It's made from the brand's extra virgin California-bred olive oil and doubles as an aromatherapy roller since its hinoki-cedar scent is made to calm your senses upon application.
If you decide to pick up this new release, you'll get a free shampoo sample with your purchase. There's also a landing page full of select bestsellers that are 20% off for Mother's Day.
So many ways to unlock your smart home
The Yale Assure Lock 2 is our favorite smart lock. My colleague reviewed 14 of the best ways to secure your smart home, and the Yale model came out on top for its modular design and ability to integrate with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Home platforms. Now, you can add another way to integrate the lock into your home with Z-Wave support.
This new lock is the first Z-Wave model from Yale to feature fingerprint unlocking. It integrates directly into ADT's Plus security system and enters as a separate counterpart to our more general purpose best-tested pick. That allows the device to not just unlock the front door with a fingerprint, but also disarm your entire security system at the same time. There's also support for punching in a PIN code.
The new Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Z-Wave is now available for purchase directly from Yale with a $280 price tag.
A coveted follow-up to a sold-out debut colalb
If you missed the first Gap x Dôen collaboration, the second clothing capsule is launching online today. The 38-piece collection takes cues from both brands' effortless dressing, featuring feminine silhouettes and easygoing prints. Starting at $34, that includes California-inspired matching sets, linen gingham dresses, denim trouser shorts and more that style easily with one another. It raises the bar from its debut release by expanding into baby and men's apparel, marking the first time Dôen has offered menswear.
Talking about colon health and colonoscopies is cool
After hearing about Worldclass, our associate editor, Elena Matarazzo, couldn't wait to get her hands on the brand's apparel and other accessories. For those who are unfamiliar, Worldclass was created by two colon cancer survivors and now they are using their lived experience to spread awareness about the importance of routine colonoscopies and colon health.
Its sweats being buttery soft is just a bonus — the company's mission to make colonoscopies accessible would be enough of a reason to support the brand. In just 5 years, colon cancer is predicted to be the deadliest cancer for those under 50 years old. All the proceeds from each sale go towards providing colonoscopies for the underinsured.
Earlier this week, the brand came out with an 80s-inspired ringer tee that is sure to kick off a conversation when wearing with 'Colonoscopy Enthusiast' plastered across the front and it is $39. If you're looking for something brighter for the summer, its classic cotton logo tee just got a lime green revamp and is $42. If tees aren't your thing, this neutral perforated snapback hat will be something you'll reach for on sunny beach days or runs and comes in at $45.
This week also saw the launch of other products our editors deemed worthy of standalone coverage. Shop all these additional launches below, including a new instant camera from Polaroid, the latest Lego Star Wars set and more.
Polaroid Flip Instant Camera
This instant camera from the renowned camera brand hits store shelves this week, marking Polaroid's first sonar-backed autofocus system in decades, designed to make it easier to get the perfect shot. Some of the latest features include Bluetooth support and brighter flash.
Lego UCS Jango Fett's Starship Set
Each spring, Lego launches a massive new kit from the Star Wars universe for May the 4th as part of its Ultimate Collector Series . This year's is the first recreation of Jango Fett's ship since all the way back in 2022.
Shokz OpenDots One Open-Ear Headphones
There's a new contender vying for the title of best clip-on earbuds. Shokz is known for its workout-focused buds, and now the company has launched its new OpenDots to compete with the editor-favorite Bose Sport Open. As deals editors at Underscored, we are some of the first people to hear about the latest product news from reader-favorite brands. Our deals team — comprised of senior editor Rikka Altland, editor Jacqueline Saguin and associate editor Elena Matarazzo — is passionate about product launches that we would be tempted to shop, and we enjoy finding a coveted new item (especially one from a brand with top marks from our experts) because it means we're helping our readers make savvy buying decisions.

Google Photos vs. iCloud: Which should you use for your photos?

Google Photos and iCloud are among the best cloud storage services that make it easy to sync your photos across devices and share them with friends and family. However, they differ in several key ways, and choosing the wrong platform for your needs could result in a headache. In this guide, we compare Google Photos vs. iCloud so you can decide which photo cloud storage app is right for you. While iCloud can be used for more than just photo storage, for the purposes of this comparison, we're going to highlight what you can do in the Apple Photos app vs. Google Photos. Let's dive into some key differences between Google Photos and iCloud, specifically Apple Photos. Everyone with a Google account receives 15GB of free storage space to use across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. You can buy additional data through Google One if you need to store more content. Paid plans offer 100GB for $1.99 per month, 1TB for $9.99 per month, and 2TB for $19.99 per month. iCloud offers only 5GB of free storage. iCloud+ plans provide an additional 50GB for $0.99 per month, 200GB for $2.99 per month, or 2TB for $9.99 per month. Plans for 6TB and 12TB of storage are also available. Importantly, Google Photos can store photos and videos only. You can store other types of content, such as documents and audio files, with Google Drive, but you have to switch between apps to access this content. Meanwhile, iCloud supports all types of files in a single location, making it an all-in-one cloud hub for your content. Another notable distinction is that Google Photos enables you to choose the resolution to upload when backing up photos and videos. On the other hand, iCloud automatically backs up original photos at full resolution and replaces the copies on your device with lower-resolution versions. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Google Photos offers apps for all devices, while iCloud provides apps for Apple devices only. You can install Google Photos on a Mac computer or iPhone, but you can't install iCloud on a Windows computer or Android phone. You can still use iCloud on Windows and Android devices, but you must go through your browser to access the iCloud web app. This significantly detracts from the point of using a cloud storage app. Your photos won't automatically upload to the cloud or sync across devices, and you'll need to visit the iCloud website to view them. Effectively, iCloud is only a good option if you have a Mac computer and an iPhone. If you use any non-Apple devices, you'll have a much better experience with Google Photos. Both Google Photos and Apple Photos enable you to organize images into albums. Likewise, both automatically curate albums based on photo data like location, date, and people. They use AI to tag elements of your photos, including people, objects, and landscapes (such as mountains or sunsets). This makes it easy to search your photos later using terms like 'family photos' or 'beach.' That said, Apple Photos has a slight edge over Google Photos in terms of image editing. You can easily open any photo in Apple's Photos app, which has relatively advanced touch-up options. Google Photos offers auto-correction and some basic color and light adjustments, but that's it. With Google Photos, you can invite anyone with a Google account to join a shared album. The album owner can customize permissions for others to control whether they can add photos to the album or comment. It's also easy to share photos to third-party apps like Facebook and X. iCloud enables you to create shared Apple Photos albums, but users must have an Apple ID to access them. This can be a barrier for people without an Apple device. In addition, you can't customize permissions in an iCloud album. Anyone invited can add or delete photos, and all content stored in the album counts against the album owner's storage limit. Both apps also enable you to share photos and albums with a link. The recipient doesn't need a Google or Apple account. Overall, Google Photos is a better choice than iCloud for anyone who isn't fully locked into the Apple ecosystem. It's also better if you have friends or family who aren't Apple users since iCloud makes it challenging to share photos with them. Interested in more photo storage options? Apple also offers a tool to transfer images directly to Google Photos. iCloud is primarily designed for Apple devices, but you can access it via a web browser on Windows or Android (with limited functionality).

iOS 19's redesign had me worried — but now I think it will turn out fine

Change can be scary — especially when it's change to something you rely on every day. So I'm guessing that news of the impending iOS overhaul that Apple will announce next week at WWDC 2025 is being anticipated in some quarters like a trip to the dentist. I mean, I'm certainly nervous about what's going to happen to the interface in iOS 19 (or iOS 26, depending on who's doing the rumor-mongering). And the natural inclination to distrust change only becomes heightened when you hear phrases like "the biggest iOS update in a decade" bandied about. There have certainly been tweaks here and there, but the iPhone interface we have now looks a lot like the one we've been using since iOS 7. There's comfort in that, and the idea that it's all about to change later this year can be unsettling. It doesn't help that it's really hard to assess interface updates until you actually get to see them in person. We can talk all about the rumored changes Apple is going to implement in iOS 19 and other software updates getting previewed at WWDC, but until we're actually using the update ourselves, who knows how smooth the transition will be. We won't be entirely clear what Apple plans to do until the iOS 19/iOS 26 preview gets underway as part of the WWDC 2025 keynote on June 9. But I've been spending some time reviewing some of the leaks and rumors out there about the proposed changes. And I'm feeling a lot less worried about the prospects of an interface update as a result. Here's why. Our best looks at potential iOS 19 changes have come from Front Page Tech videos posted by Jon Prosser, though not everyone's convinced some of those screen captures reflect Apple's final plans for its iPhone software. Still, an iOS 19 preview video posted about a month ago seems to be based on the most up-to-date info about Apple's plans, at least as Prossser tells it. Watching the video, a few things stand out, starting with the rounded — though not perfectly circular — icons on the home screen. A lot of visual elements are rounder in the posted designs, particularly widgets and sliders in the Control Center. The animations when you interact with the interface get a refresh — Prosser describes them as more fluid and bouncy — and there's a glass-like shimmer to some elements like the lock screen shortcuts. To me, the most noteworthy iOS 19 interface changes are the translucent menus that pop up on the home screen when you hold and press on an icon. Do that in iOS 18, and you'll see the same pop-up menu, but it's markedly more opaque. And you'll find a lot of elements at the bottom of your iPhone screen like search bars and a revamped dock that will be part of the iPhone's built-in apps. This will all look very familiar if you've ever strapped on an Apple Vision Pro, as the interface changes seem to be inspired by the look of visionOS — the platform for Apple's spatial computing headset. I haven't had a go with the Vision Pro, but my colleague Mark Spoonauer has. And his Apple Vision Pro review notes a lot of the visual elements like translucent panels and streamlined menus that look like they're coming to the iPhone with the new iOS update. If you're in the same Vision Pro-free boat as me, I'd suggest reading this MacRumors post on the visionOS elements likely to make their way to the iPhone. It helps explain how translucent menus, floating navigation bars and more work on the headset and how they might translate to a different device like an iPhone. Having reviewed all that and taken a closer look at some of the iOS 19 redesign mockups, I'm a lot less nervous about what Apple's going to show off at WWDC 2025. In fact, at the risk of being very wrong in public, I'm not prepared to think that the iOS 19 redesign isn't that big of a deal after all. And I mean that in a good way. When I say the iOS 19 interface update won't be a big deal, I'm not talking about the look of the software. From the images we've seen so far, iOS 19 is going to look radically different from the software currently running on the iPhone. And while that certainly is going to take getting used to, it doesn't seem like those interface changes are fundamentally altering how people use their iPhones. Oh, there will be some changes in that regard. It sounds like search menus are being located to the bottom of the screen, at least in apps like Messages and Music. But that's not a bad thing if you like using your phone one-handed or are used to the Safari layout with the search bar already at the bottom of the screen. From what I can tell, it looks like there's a more visually distinct animation when you switch tabs in one of Apple's built-in apps with that tab highlighted more prominently than it is in iOS 18. That sounds like a great change to me, as I appreciate anything that makes it easy to remember where I am in an app at just a glance. There's one visionOS style element in particular that I'm hoping makes the grade in iOS 19 — less cluttered menus. Since you navigate the Vision Pro with your eyes, you need spaced-out menus so that it's clear what exactly you're looking at when you want to select something. I think the iPhone could benefit from that, too, as it might reduce the number of mistaken taps where you select the wrong item from a drop-down menu. Again, changes like that aren't radically reshaping how you use your phone currently — they're fine-tuning the process you already have in place. To me, that will make the iOS 18 to iOS 19 transition a lot easier to manage. I reserve the right to hoot and holler during the WWDC 2025 keynote if I'm wrong and it turns out Apple is trying to reinvent the wheel in terms of the iPhone's interface. But the changes floating around out there right now sound more evolutionary than anything. And that's change we can all get behind.

PSA: WhatsApp will stop working on these iPhones starting June
