Historic HBCU set to play first-ever night game

Miami Herald29-05-2025
Tuskegee University is about to flip the switch on history. On Saturday, September 6, the Golden Tigers will host their first-ever home night football game under the lights at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium, facing off against HBCU conference rival Central State.
But this isn't just a game. It's the fulfillment of a 99-year-old dream.
Back in 1926, legendary Tuskegee coach Cleve Abbott-yes, the man the stadium is named after-first proposed lighting the field for night games. It was an audacious idea at a time when electricity itself wasn't a guarantee on Southern campuses. Now, nearly a century later, Abbott's vision finally beams to life.
Thanks to a partnership with Alabama Power, new lighting has been installed at the historic 10,000-seat stadium, setting the stage for a game that means more than just football. It's a symbol of progress, perseverance, and pride for one of the most storied programs in HBCU history.
'It gives me great pride to see how Alabama Power has helped light up the Tuskegee campus,' said Jonathan Porter, a Tuskegee alum, Trustee, and Senior Vice President of Customer Operations for Alabama Power. 'Our commitment to the university has been ongoing and these enhancements are another example of our efforts to be strategic partners. Personally, as a second-generation Tuskegee alum. I cannot wait for the first night game and the celebrations that will come with it.'
Tuskegee isn't just any program-they're the winningest team in HBCU football. Now, they're entering a new era, and they're doing it in prime time.
'This is a transformational moment not only for Tuskegee Athletics but for the entire university and community,' said Director of Athletics Reginald Ruffin. 'Playing under the lights at Abbott Memorial Stadium gives us new opportunities to engage our fanbase, provide a better game day experience, and showcase our rich traditions to a national audience. We're proud to take this step forward and make history in 2025.'
Last time these two teams clashed, Tuskegee handled business with a 30–14 win over Central State. But this rematch has extra juice. The lights, the legacy, the national spotlight-this will be about more than bragging rights.
It's about reclaiming the narrative around HBCU football, investing in facilities, and creating moments that players-and fans-will never forget.
Tuskegee. Central State. Under the lights.

DeSean Jackson gives four star WR from Oregon fresh start

Ryan Pellum is heading to Delaware State, giving new head coach DeSean Jackson a major offensive addition as the HBCU prepares for its first season under the former NFL All-Pro. Pellum's move from Oregon to Delaware State was first reported by On3 Sports and immediately adds intrigue to Jackson's debut campaign. This will mark Ryan Pellum's second college stop after spending his freshman season at Oregon. The Long Beach, California, native entered the transfer portal in January. Days later, he was arrested and later pleaded no contest to aggravated assault using a semi-automatic firearm in connection with a December 25 incident in Long Beach. Two additional special allegations were dismissed as part of the plea deal. Before his time at Oregon, Ryan Pellum was one of the most sought-after receivers in the 2024 recruiting class. He was ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 171 overall recruit nationally, while also checking in as the No. 28 wide receiver and the No. 12 overall player in California. His high school career at Millikan included more than 3,700 receiving yards, multiple 1,000-yard seasons, and honors such as the Moore League Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. At Oregon in 2024, Ryan Pellum appeared in four games, utilizing a redshirt season. He saw limited action, playing three offensive snaps and eight on special teams, and fielded a punt in a win over Michigan. For DeSean Jackson, landing Ryan Pellum represents a high-upside gamble. The new Delaware State coach, who built his NFL career on explosive plays, now has a young receiver with elite speed, strong route-running skills, and a proven high school production record. If Pellum can make a smooth transition and stay on the field, he could be a central figure in the Hornets' offensive attack. Delaware State, long searching for a breakthrough in the MEAC, will open a new era with DeSean Jackson at the helm and Ryan Pellum as one of its most intriguing newcomers. Both will be looking to prove themselves-Jackson as a first-time head coach, and Pellum as a top recruit seeking to fulfill his promise on the HBCU stage. HBCU basketball coach has lunch with Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers

North Carolina Central men's basketball coach LeVelle Moton had an unforgettable encounter during a recent visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp. Thanks to his long-standing friendship with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, Moton has made attending camp an annual ritual for his own professional development as an HBCU coach. But this year's trip included an unexpected highlight: a sit-down conversation with one of football's all-time greats, quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "Man, it was amazing," Moton said via text to HBCU Gameday. "Obviously, Coach Tomlin and I are close so I attend training camp every year for Professional Development. This year, I took Nico Harrison (Dallas Mavericks) and Jeff McInnis…. Aaron saw me at lunch, introduced himself and told me that Mike T had nothing but great things to say about me." What started as a quick greeting turned into an extended, in-depth exchange. "Five minutes later, he came up and sat at our table and we talked like we've known each other for years," Moton recalled. "I think he's the greatest QB talent to ever play, so I asked him questions about preparation, film study, style of leadership, how he reads defenses… Man, it was a Ted Talk and Masterclass all in one. Great dude!" For Moton, who thrives on cross-sport learning and leadership insights in his role for the Durham, NC HBCU, the conversation was more than just a fan moment-it was a rare chance to peek into the mind of one of the NFL's most cerebral players. From the sounds of it, the NCCU coach left Latrobe with more than a few X's and O's-he walked away with lessons on leadership, preparation, and mindset from a four-time NFL MVP. Big Ten, ACC teams schedule HBCU squad

Hampton University, an HBCU in the Coastal Athletic Association, has announced a groundbreaking football scheduling announcement with teams from the ACC and Big Ten as well as a regional G5 squad. The Virginia-based HBCU has lined up three consecutive seasons of games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents, including its first-ever matchups against Power 4 Pirates will begin their FBS stretch in 2026 with a visit to the Big Ten. Hampton is set to face the University of Maryland on September 5, 2026, at SECU Stadium in College Park. The following year, the HBCU will take on the ACC's Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta on October 9, 2027. In 2028, Hampton will close the run with a regional showdown against Old Dominion University of the Sun Belt Conference. That game is scheduled for September 16 at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk-just under 14 miles from Hampton's campus. The two schools share a recent FCS rivalry, having met six times between 2010 and 2021 before Old Dominion's move to the FBS. These matchups with the Big Ten and ACC mark a bold step forward for Hampton, which left the MEAC in 2018 and now competes in the CAA. Hampton went 5-6 last season and is set to start the 2025 season against defending HBCU national champion Jackson State.
