Should NFL stars play Olympic flag football? Jason Kelce has a bold and old-school solution
As Olympic flag football talks taking the news headlines for its much-anticipated debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, a new debate has been ignited—one that's been simmering beneath the surface since the sport's inclusion.

Who exactly should represent the United States on this global stage: world-class NFL stars or battle-hardened professional flag football athletes? Jason Kelce has a solid idea.
Jason Kelce's proposal to determine NFL players' Olympic worth is too bold to ignore
The conversation took an unexpected twist thanks to former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, who floated a wild yet captivating idea during the latest New Heights podcast episode with his brother, Travis Kelce. His solution? A high-stakes, winner-take-all showdown between NFL players and elite flag football professionals.
Inside the NFL Owner's Meeting + Gretzky on Ovechkin's Scoring Record, GOATs & NHL Playoffs | EP 141
"Let's just have a flag football team of NFL players play these guys and see if they can win," Kelce suggested. 'May the best team win... I think a coach that is familiar with flag football should select an NFL-represented team. And that team should just play this flag football team that's been playing for a long time and feels like they are the best at it and they don't need other guys. Then whoever wins (goes to the Olympics).
"
It's a proposal as simple as it is brilliant. At its core, it's more than just a game—it's a solution to a problem that doesn't yet have a clear answer. Should Olympic rosters favor experience in the flag football format or raw athleticism and name recognition from the NFL?
Kelce's idea is tailor-made for drama. Picture a squad of NFL giants—freak athletes trained in the highest levels of American football—taking the field against flag football veterans who've spent their lives mastering the speed, finesse, and strategy required by the non-contact version of the game.

While the NFL players might have the edge in physicality and agility, flag football isn't just tackle football without the hits.
It demands different instincts, quicker decisions, and a mastery of spacing and evasion that even NFL pros might find disorienting.
This hypothetical clash could deliver not just answers but entertainment gold. 'The Longest Yard' comparisons are unavoidable—except in this case, the underdogs are professionals in their own right, armed with experience and chemistry.
Meanwhile, the NFL players would be the 'fish out of water,' navigating unfamiliar terrain where pure athletic dominance may not guarantee victory.
Of course, one can't ignore the elephant in the room: injury risk. More practices, more reps, more exposure—all increase the chance of something going wrong for active NFL stars. But as Kelce implied, if they lose the qualifier, the issue becomes moot. They wouldn't be playing in the Olympics anyway.
In a landscape where debates often stall over logistics and legacy, Jason Kelce's pitch provides a thrilling, competitive, and media-friendly path forward. The question is—will the powers that be dare to make it happen?

While Paulina Gretzky stays pretty busy managing her life with her husband and children, she also makes sure to spend time with her parents. A couple of weeks ago, Paulina Gretzky posted several pictures of the Florida Panthers' game that she was spotted attending alongside her father, Wayne Gretzky and her husband and children. For Wayne Gretzky, things became rocky back in February when he found himself in a huge controversy as fans accused him of supporting Team USA in the 4 Nations' Final match against Team Canada. Since then, the NHL legend has kept a low profile but he recently appeared on the New Heights podcast which is hosted by NFL player, Travis Kelce and ex NFL star, Jason Kelce. On the recent episode of New Heights, Wayne Gretzky said, "I want you to know, I am the only guy in the TNT panel that picked Edmonton to get to the finals. I picked Tampa Bay in the East. Part of my pick then was Matthew Tkachuk, who was hurt.' The NHL legend added, 'He was such a big part of the success of the Panthers, and I wasn't sure he was coming back.' 2025 NBA Finals An Unforeseen Clash Of Rising Superstars: Analyzing OKC Thunder And Indiana Pacers
Last Updated: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Haliburton lead Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers into a historic NBA Finals matchup starting June 6. An unlikely NBA Finals matchup between two rivals who have never been to the promised land. But, in hindsight, it seems like the seeds for the same were planted almost a decade ago. Back in 2017 — when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was about to enroll at Kentucky and Tyrese Haliburton was preparing for his senior year of high school in Wisconsin — the Indiana Pacers traded Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder, acquiring Domantas Sabonis in return. In 2019, the Thunder traded George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that included Gilgeous-Alexander. Later, in 2022, the Pacers traded Sabonis to the Sacramento Kings for a package that included Haliburton. Here we are now. Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA's MVP and Oklahoma City's best player, while Haliburton is an Olympic gold medalist and Indiana's best player. They will lead their teams into Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night—Indiana at Oklahoma City—in a series that will determine who hoists the Larry O'Brien Trophy. advetisement Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's OKC So Far Depending on how you count, the Thunder are in the finals for either the second time or the fifth time. The franchise, when it was in Seattle, lost the NBA World Championship Series to Washington in 1978, won the title in a rematch against the then-Bullets in 1979, and lost in the NBA Finals to Chicago in 1996. Oklahoma City, bolstered by the holy trinity of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden, reached the finals in 2012, only to lose to a spirited LeBron James-led Miami Heat. This season, the Thunder are 80-18, following a 68-14 regular season and a 12-4 playoff run, sweeping Memphis in Round 1, surviving seven games against Denver in Round 2, and defeating Minnesota in five games for the Western Conference title. Tyrese Haliburton and The Indiana Pacers So Far Indiana is in the NBA Finals for the second time, having lost to the Shaq-Kobe Los Angeles Lakers in 2000. This year, they emerged from the Eastern Conference as the No. 4 seed, defeating Milwaukee in five games in Round 1, top-seeded Cleveland in five games in Round 2, and New York in the conference finals. The Pacers were 10-15 through the first 25 games of the season, then went 40-17 to finish the regular season. They are the fourth team to start 10-15 or worse and win a conference title, joining Seattle in 1977-78 (8-17), the 1956-57 St. Louis Hawks (10-15), and the 1958-59 Minneapolis Lakers (10-15). None of those teams went on to win the NBA title. The Rivalry So Far This Season Oklahoma City swept the season series with Indiana 2-0, part of a regular season where the Thunder, who finished with the NBA's best record, went 29-1 against the Eastern Conference. This does not include a loss to Milwaukee in the NBA Cup final, a game that didn't count in any standings. Advertisement So, the matchup is set. It's the Paul George finals, albeit without Paul George, who had arguably the best season of his career with the Thunder, averaging 28 points and finishing third in the MVP voting for 2018-19, starting at OKC on Thursday. top videos View All (with agency inputs) About the Author Siddarth Sriram Watch CNN-News18 here.
