Perak MCA Youth publishes guideline for Vietnamese spouses
Perak MCA Youth chief Daniel Wa stated that the guideline was developed following numerous complaints from locals and their Vietnamese spouses about the difficulties faced in obtaining the visa.
"The Malaysia-Vietnam Friendship Association (MVFA) has also encountered such issues, and it's challenging to provide individual consultations.
"Therefore, we decided to publish this guideline, available in both Vietnamese and Bahasa Malaysia, to reach more people," he said during a press conference at Wisma MCA Perak on Friday (May 23).
Wa highlighted that Vietnamese individuals often face issues such as exorbitant fees for the visa application process.
"Some have resorted to using middlemen or websites, paying at least RM8,000, and still not obtaining the correct visa," he said, adding that some have even resorted to illegal means to acquire the visa.
"With the guideline, we simplify the process for them," he added.
Wa mentioned that about 1,000 copies of the guideline have been printed and are available at Wisma MCA Perak, Kampar MCA office, and Shake & Bake Cafe. Each copy is priced at RM20.
MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who was also present, praised the effort by Wa and MVFA Perak chairman Kelly Truong in creating the guideline.
He noted that the book also includes information on the lifestyles, cultures, and religions of Malaysia's three major races.
"It explains how to respect various religious taboos," he said.
"Wa is also considering creating similar guidelines for other nationalities if there is a need," he added.
Dr Mah, who is also Perak MCA chairman, pointed out that there is a significant population of Vietnamese women married to Malaysian men, particularly in the Kinta Valley.
"Adjusting to a new place can be stressful, especially when dealing with socio-economic and family issues. Truong herself faced similar challenges when she first married here," he said, noting that Truong teaches Bahasa Malaysia to other Vietnamese individuals.
"We have also seen cases where some cannot cope and leave the country, leading to social issues," he added.

Anwar: RON95 subsidy eligibility to consider luxury assets, not just income
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — The government is finalising the eligibility criteria and implementation mechanism for its targeted RON95 petrol subsidy programme, with factors beyond monthly income to be considered, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed. In a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday, Anwar said that eligibility will be determined using various data sources to ensure a comprehensive and fair assessment, including the ownership of luxury properties and high-end vehicles. 'Eligibility for the RON95 fuel subsidy will be determined using various data sources, including income information from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and the Household Income Survey (HIS) conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM),' he said. 'This is to ensure a more comprehensive approach is adopted so that assistance is directed to those who genuinely need it.' The prime minister, who is also the fnance minister, was responding to a question from Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin about the implementation timeline for the RON995 subsidy rationalisation. Anwar reaffirmed the government's commitment to introducing the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy in the second half of 2025. He also reiterated previous assurances that the rationalisation would not affect at least 85 per cent of Malaysians, with only non-citizens and high-income earners expected to be excluded from the subsidy. Last month, Anwar announced that RON95 would be lowered to RM1.99 per litre for Malaysians once subsidy withdrawal is implemented.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 21 — Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reportedly slammed critics of Johor's development as fearmongers, by claiming that the state is unable to provide sufficient water and electricity supply for companies. He said such claims were slanderous and malicious, aimed at undermining the state government's efforts to attract international investment, particularly in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'We have also set up a special committee involving three state executive councillors with portfolios in Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources; Infrastructure and Transport; as well as Housing and Local Government. 'So, when a company wants to set up a data centre in Johor, we will assess it first, and if there is insufficient electricity and water supply, we will not approve their application,' Berita Harian quoted him saying. He said the initiatives undertaken by the state government were comprehensive, carried out in collaboration with Putrajaya to provide the best possible facilities for investors. Expanding further, Onn Hafiz said the state government has also introduced various initiatives, including tapping into alternative water supply in collaboration with Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd to ensure sufficient resources. He said the state government also has a long-term plan with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation to ensure water supply remains sufficient until 2030. 'Johor is very serious about bringing in investment, and we will ensure that investors who choose Johor will feel secure with adequate water and electricity supply. 'As for those seeking to fish in troubled waters, I hope they will stop, because what we want to build is not only Johor's economy but also one that benefits the nation,' he said. Earlier this week, State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said Johor is the only state with a technical committee dedicated to evaluating and approving data centre projects, particularly their impact on water resources. He said the move ensures data centre planning is carried out comprehensively, including water efficiency and environmental sustainability. The committee, which he chairs, also advises developers to adopt modern cooling systems and new water-saving technologies. The rapid growth of data centre projects in Johor has raised concerns that the state could face a treated water crisis by 2030, with BIMB Research predicting demand will rise 18-fold from 20 million litres per day (mld) to 368 mld.

Ringgit opens higher against major, regional currencies
