LG Malaysia rebrands rent-up to LG subscribe, unveils LG PuriCare™ ATOM-U Water Purifier

The Sun12-06-2025
LG Electronics Malaysia has unveiled a major shift in how Malaysians can access cutting-edge home appliances — by rebranding its LG Rent-Up programme to LG Subscribe. This move, launched at an exclusive event featuring LG Brand Ambassador and Paris 2024 Olympic Bronze Medallist Lee Zii Jia, positions Malaysia as the first global LG subsidiary to fully adopt the home appliance subscription model.
The new branding reflects LG's shift from traditional product ownership to a modern, flexible subscription approach, aligning with its 'Life's Good' philosophy — making innovative technology more accessible and affordable for everyone.
'Customers were confused by the term 'rent' — unsure if it meant short-term use or eventual ownership,' said Mr. Justin Choi, Managing Director of LG Electronics Malaysia.
'By moving to 'LG Subscribe', we're providing clarity and aligning with successful strategies already in place in Korea, Singapore, India, and Thailand.'
The rebrand is part of LG's Future Vision 2030, which aims to evolve the company into a Smart Life Solution Company, delivering intelligent, connected experiences across homes, businesses, transport, and digital platforms.
'This marks a pivotal moment for how Malaysians experience premium technology,' Justin said.
'LG Subscribe removes the financial barriers of upfront ownership — and offers flexibility for modern lifestyles.'
Subscribers can choose from a range of 10 premium products, including the LG PuriCare™ Water Purifier, LG CordZero™ vacuums, LG ArtCool™ air conditioners, and the LG WashTower™. These come bundled with 5 to 7 years of professional maintenance, LG ThinQ™ smart integration, and customisable payment plans.
The service is gaining popularity, particularly among young families seeking affordable ways to equip their homes with high-end appliances.
Olympian Lee Zii Jia applauded the initiative at the event: 'As someone who values both performance and flexibility, I admire how LG Subscribe makes premium products more accessible.
'It's a smart way of living — always adapting and evolving, just like in sports.'
To mark the rebranding, LG also launched its latest innovation — the LG PuriCare™ ATOM-U, a sleek under-sink water purifier designed for minimalist spaces. With advanced purification technology, a compact design, and aesthetic appeal, ATOM-U promises both functionality and elegance for modern homes.
'The combination of LG Subscribe and ATOM-U reflects our holistic approach to innovation,' added Justin.
'We're not just rethinking products — we're transforming how people experience them.'

HSBC Premier goes ‘beyond just wealth'

KUALA LUMPUR: HSBC Malaysia has rolled out a redefined HSBC Premier proposition designed to capture the country's fast-growing affluent and high-net-worth segment, which is projected to transform Malaysia's financial landscape over the next decade. Anchored on four strategic pillars (wealth, health, travel and international) the new premier offering blends traditional financial services with health, lifestyle and global connectivity in what the bank says is a blueprint for the next era of affluent banking. HSBC international wealth and premier banking Asia head Kai Zhang framed the launch as both a milestone for Malaysia and a stepping stone for HSBC's wider regional ambitions. 'Today is more than a proposition launch. It's a milestone in how we serve the evolving wealth and international banking needs of our customers in Malaysia, and a signal of our broader ambition in the region,' Zhang said. 'We estimate that the percentage of adults in Malaysia with at least US$250,000 (RM1.18 million) in financial wealth will double over the course of this decade. 'But it's not just about growth, it's about how wealth is changing. 'Customers are seeking diversification, investing for the long term, and integrating wealth decisions into broader life goals.' Data from GlobalData suggests Malaysia's affluent market, including high-net-worth individuals, will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.4% between 2025 and 2029, with liquid assets expected to reach nearly US$350 billion in four years. HSBC Malaysia international wealth and premier banking country head Linda Yip, said this growth is also altering what customers expect from their banks. 'Affluent customers now seek holistic solutions that help them accelerate their wealth while placing their health and wellbeing at the forefront,' she said. 'Achieving this balance allows them to grow, protect, enjoy and preserve their wealth for generations.' Yip said the bank's goal is not only to deepen relationships with existing customers but to attract new ones to its platform and hope Malaysians, especially the affluent segment, will feel that this is the bank and the service they want to get. 'Our aspiration is to go higher than what we have now, and we expect the second half of 2025 to be very robust for us.' According to HSBC's Quality of Life research, 78% of affluent Malaysians keep most of their portfolios in fixed income bonds and equities, while over half (51%) are saving for leisure and travel and 48% prioritise health for a better quality of life. Yip said HSBC Premier stands out by going 'beyond just wealth', combining financial planning, lifestyle experiences and borderless banking. This includes seamless international services for families with children studying abroad, ensuring access to banking support across HSBC's global network, giving parents peace of mind.

'It's to ensure a safety net': Malaysian super diva Khadijah Ibrahim encourages musicians to move into business

Malaysia's legendary diva Khadijah Ibrahim believes young musicians and celebrities to not just rely on income from the entertainment world alone, but instead start planning for the future by joining the world of entrepreneurship while their names are still relevant and widely known According to her, the entertainment world sometimes can be unstable and even fickle at times so therefore, young celebrities are encouraged to use their popularity as a springboard to build a strong personal and business brand from the very beginning. "I have seen many of my musician friends who have fallen into despair after no longer being active on the entertainment stage. When their names are no longer mentioned, job offers are decreasing, and eventually, they lose their source of income. I don't want this to happen to the younger generation today. I have seen it so many times that I just want a better world for the younger ones," said Khadijah. Khadijah, who is also the Chairman of Karyawan, Malaysia's association for music industry staff, said it is also good for celebrities to be creative in their career and venture into other fronts that can help their career. And using their popularity to push themselves in the business is not at all a wrong step to take as it also gives them another avenue to look for extra funds for their future. "Learn about the ins and outs of business. Don't just be an ambassador or 'name' for a product. Go out into the field, find out about marketing, management, and production. If we don't understand it ourselves, others will easily take advantage," Khadijah added. Khadijah also shared her experience as an artist who transitioned into business by establishing her own food company, including the brand Sos Cili Ibu, which is now increasingly gaining a place in the hearts of consumers both domestically and internationally. "Doing business gives me satisfaction because it not only generates continuous income, but also opens up job opportunities for others and contributes to the national economy. I'm happy to be involved in the food industry now. "I started with a product that I loved and my love for food. I also know Malaysians love spicy food, so I created an original, locally made chilli sauce, now known as Sos Cili Ibu," he said. Khadijah and Sos Cili Ibu Meet Her Fans at Singapore Expo Khadijah has big plans for her product. She showcased her product at the Singapore Expo an event which was held in conjunction with the Malaysia Fest from July 31 to Aug 3. Many of her fans in Singapore crowded the show hall when Khadijah introduced the product to Singaporeans. On top of that, her Sos Cili Ibu was also given the thumbs up by top Malaysian artistes, including the likes of Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Ifa Raziah, Zaiton Sameon, Jasmin Hamid, dan many more. "I was overwhelmed by the support from fans and visitors at the Singapore Expo. Many came not just to buy sauce, but also to take pictures and share memories of my musical heyday. It was a pretty sweet experience," she said. Khadijah also announced besides Singapore, the chili sauce is also available in Indonesia and Brunei. On top of that, she and her team are also in talks with a major distributor who has chains in 23 other countries. For the record, Khadijah, better known as Kathy Ibrahim, has been an active singer since the 70s and is also one of the few artists in Malaysia who has produced her own album every decade since then. Her famous song "Kupendam Sebuah Duka" is a glorious ballad that is played in almost every household to this day. One of Malaysia's most profound vocalists, she continues to mesmerise music fans to this day. Besides being a brilliant musician, she is also an established actress and now an inspiring businesswoman. At the age of 66, many of us will be thinking of slowing down and even thinking of retiring from the workforce. For Khadijah, she is now making a name for herself in the business world. And for sure, fans will be wishing her the best of success in her new venture.

MR D.I.Y. posts higher 2Q profit, declares RM142.1mil dividend

KUALA LUMPUR: MR D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd will continue to expand its retail footprint by strategically launching new stores across its core and sub-brands in 2025. 'These efforts aim to reinforce the group's market leadership and its position as the value retailer of choice for all Malaysians,' the home improvement retailer said in the notes accompanying its financial results. MR D.I.Y. sees no material impact on its business operations despite market volatility from geopolitical tensions, tariff changes, and domestic policy shifts, including the revised Sales and Service Tax in July 2025 and the 2% EPF contribution for foreign workers. In the second quarter ended June 30 (2Q25), MR D.I.Y.'s net profit rose 2.2% to RM158.6mil, or 1.67 sen per share, lifting first-half (1H25) net profit 10.9% to RM332.7mil, or 3.51 sen per share. Quarterly revenue rose 1.5% to RM1.2bil, lifting first-half revenue 5.6% to RM2.47bil from RM2.3bil in 1H24. The group opened 31 net new stores during the quarter, bringing the total to 1,502 as at 1H25 - an increase of 12.1% year-on-year (y-o-y). Total transactions rose 5.0% y-o-y to 48.5 million, partially offset by a 3.3% decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction. MR D.I.Y said it remained focused on delivering long-term, sustainable value to stakeholders through strategic investments in growth and technology to enhance operational efficiency, while maintaining a consistent dividend policy. For 2Q25, the group declared an interim single-tier dividend of RM0.015 per ordinary share, amounting to about RM142.1mil, representing an 89.6% payout ratio. The dividend will be paid on Sept 8 to shareholders on the Record of Depositors as at Aug 29.
