Mohali dist earns Rs 11.43 cr in property tax in just 19 days under OTS scheme
Lauding the citizens' overwhelming response, Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said the unprecedented recovery between July 1 and July 19 reflects the success of the scheme introduced by chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, aimed at offering substantial relief on long-pending property tax dues.
According to official data, Zirakpur topped the charts with collections of Rs 7.53 crore, followed by Kharar at Rs 2.09 crore, and Derabassi at Rs 96.45 lakh.
The breakdown of collections from other municipal councils is as follows: Kurali – Rs 22.25 lakh, Nayagaon – Rs 32.50 lakh, Banur – Rs 17.02 lakh, and Lalru – Rs 12.39 lakh.
The DC explained that under the OTS scheme, residents with unpaid or partially paid property tax dues up to March 31, 2025, are eligible for a full waiver on penalty and interest if they clear the principal amount by July 31, 2025. Those who pay between Aug 1 and Oct 31 will get a 50% waiver on the penalty and interest.
After this period, the full penalty and interest will apply as per existing laws.
To further facilitate taxpayers, the district administration has decided to keep municipal council offices open on weekends until July 31. "This will help working citizens who are unable to visit during weekdays," the DC added.
In a bid to encourage the public and assess the implementation, additional deputy commissioner (urban development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal inspected Zirakpur and Kharar municipal councils on Friday. He expressed satisfaction with the strong response from residents and lauded the efforts of the municipal teams.
Urging citizens to take advantage of the scheme, DC Komal Mittal appealed to residents to visit their respective municipal councils and clear their dues within the stipulated timeframe to avoid penalties.

Bus fare subsidy helps women increase edu spending: Study
Women save 30-50 per cent on transport costs in cities with fare-free travel, allowing them to redirect resources towards essential household needs such as food, healthcare and children's education, according to a survey covering five states in the country. Fare subsidies for bus travel also lead to more jobs for women, it said. More than one in four women across Delhi, Bengaluru and Hubballi-Dharwad, where fully subsidised fare is in place, reported switching to buses after such schemes were introduced, the study said. The report – 'Beyond Free Rides: A Multi-State Assessment of Women's Bus Fare Subsidy Schemes in Urban India' -- commissioned by the Sustainable Mobility Network and prepared by Nikore Associates, evaluates such fare subsidy programmes for women and transgender persons across 10 cities in Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Maharashtra. "For many women, especially those in low-income jobs, daily bus fares stood in the way of work and opportunity. Removing that cost does more than improve access -- it enables economic participation and affirms dignity," Nikore Associates founder and chief economist Mitali Nikore said in a statement. "In cities with a full bus fare subsidy scheme, women save consistently over half of their monthly transport expenses. These savings offer meaningful budget relief, allowing them to redirect resources toward essential household needs such as food, healthcare and children's education," the report said. Cities with partial subsidy schemes offer limited financial benefits, it said. The report revealed that in cities such as Nagpur and Pune, where fare subsidies apply primarily to intercity or long-distance routes, average monthly savings range from Rs 409 to Rs 538. These limited outcomes are due to a "misalignment between subsidy coverage and women's actual travel patterns, as most of their trips occur within the city limits and are linked to work-related responsibilities", it said. These daily, short-distance journeys often remain fully paid by the women, which limits the overall effectiveness of the subsidy, the report found. Survey data reveals that women in cities with reliable service delivery, such as Bengaluru, where bus availability and frequency are strong, report employment improvements at rates almost five times higher than those in cities with infrastructural constraints.

Top Court Extends Vikas Yadav's Interim Bail By A Month In Nitish Katara Murder Case
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by four weeks the interim bail granted to Vikas Yadav, undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, to attend to his ailing mother. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh asked Yadav to approach the Delhi High Court for seeking remission in the case. The top court has been extending interim bail to Yadav on medical grounds. The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by four weeks the interim bail granted to Vikas Yadav, undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, to attend to his ailing mother. The AIIMS in its opinion said if the patient failed to respond to conservative management (physiotherapy and medications), then surgical decompression of the lumbar spinal canal was recommended. The top court then extended the interim bail granted to him to look after his mother. On April 24, the top court granted interim bail to Yadav to meet his ailing mother and directed that she be examined by a medical board of AIIMS doctors. Imposing conditions, the top court directed the convict to remain confined to his house in Ghaziabad and not get in touch with the case's witnesses, including Katara's mother Neelam Katara. The apex court granted him the relief subject to depositing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of the like amount. Vikas is the son of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav. His cousin Vishal Yadav was also punished for the kidnapping and murder of business executive Katara. The duo was against Katara's alleged affair with Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas, as they belonged to different castes. Another co-convict Sukhdev Pehalwan was given a 20-year jail term without any remission benefit. Earlier, the Delhi High Court, while upholding the life imprisonment awarded to Vikas and Vishal Yadav by the trial court, specified a 30-year sentence, without any remission, to both of them. It had awarded a 25-year jail term to the third convict, Pehalwan. The Delhi prisons administration had last year rejected Yadav's remission request after his conduct was found to be unsatisfactory.

Complaint Against Mamata Banerjee For Post Alleging Delhi Cops Beat Up Woman
Kolkata: The BJP's Soumendu Adhikari - brother of Leader of the Opposition in Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari -- has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police, accusing Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of spreading fake news on social media. The Lok Sabha member from Kanthi has accused her of disseminating provocative content to spark discontent and disharmony. The trigger was Ms Banerjee's recent claims of police brutality on a Bengali-speaking woman and her child. The Chief Minister and her Trinamool Congress are claiming that Bengali speaking people - especially migrant workers - are being discriminated against and are facing violence in other states. In his complaint, Mr Adhikari said Ms Banerjee was spreading "false, fabricated and communally charged content via her official social media handle, with the intent to malign the image of the Delhi Police, provoke public discontent, and stoke inter-community disharmony". After the Delhi Police said Ms Banerjee's claim was a "complete fabrication", the Chief Minister hit back. On Tuesday, addressing a government event in Birbhum district, she said the mother and child were "taken to police stations one after another" -- just as she had predicted. "I told you yesterday in the meeting. Check the records. I told you that they will be threatened. That is what happened. We will ask them (the victims) to return. And it will be proven who is true and who is false," she added. In the video posted on social media on Monday, Ms Banerjee had alleged that the Delhi Police had brutally beaten up the mother and child. The migrant worker family had gone to work in Delhi. Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the... — Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) July 27, 2025 Earlier today, Abhishek Dhania, a senior officer of the Delhi Police, refuted the Chief Minister's statement. He said the woman, Sanjanu Parveen, had claimed that on Saturday, four plainclothes policemen had come to their house, took them to a secluded area, beat them up and extorted Rs 25,000 from them. "Understanding the seriousness of the situation, we formed multiple teams since last night. Based on technical and local intelligence, as well as CCTV footage, we have gathered various evidence. Based on that evidence, we found out that the whole story told by this lady is baseless... During the interrogation, she mentioned that her relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal, is a political worker, and on his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him," the officer told reporters.
