Mack Hansen is major Lions doubt ahead of first Test due to foot injury

South Wales Argus10 hours ago
Hansen sustained a foot injury in Saturday's 48-0 thumping of an AUNZ Invitational XV and was unable to take part in the squad's first full bore training session of the week on Tuesday.
The Ireland wing is in contention to face Australia at Suncorp Stadium, most likely as a bench option covering the back three, but opportunities to prove his fitness are now very limited.

Kinghorn, viewed as first-choice full-back, also appears to be losing his battle with the knee injury sustained against ACT Brumbies on July 9 after it was confirmed he will not be able to train until Wednesday at the earliest.
Neither player has been ruled out at this stage, but attack coach Richard Wigglesworth has revealed the Lions have already picked their team for the series opener – subject to any late changes – with the players due to be told on Wednesday.
'Mack hurt his foot in the game. I don't think it's anything serious but he was managed today (Tuesday),' Wigglesworth said.
'Hopefully he will be fully integrated pretty quickly. It's nothing that we are overly concerned about. We'll know a bit more tomorrow.
'We'll have to see tomorrow what Blair looks like. He hasn't trained fully with the squad but he's been on his feet so we'll know a bit more in the next 24 hours whether we can get him on the field.'

Andy Farrell will announce his team to the public on Thursday with the identity of the flankers and inside centre the key talking points in the starting XV.
Tadhg Beirne and Ollie Chessum appear to be locked in a shootout for the number six jersey with the England back row's better form on tour potentially giving him the edge over a rival who has captained the midweek team twice.
Tom Curry, Josh van der Flier and Jac Morgan could all be chosen at openside – the most competitive position in the team – with compelling arguments provided for each of them to start against the Wallabies.
Another option would be to field Curry on the blindside and deploy either van der Flier or Morgan at seven, resulting in Beirne or Chessum joining Maro Itoje in the second row rather than current favourite Joe McCarthy.
Huw Jones (left) looks certain to take the inside centre spot for the Lions in the first Test against Australia following Garry Ringrose's concussion (David Davies/PA)
Garry Ringrose's 12-day stand down for concussion has made the in-form Huw Jones a certainty at outside centre, but the repercussions are felt at inside centre where Farrell must choose between Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu.
Aki has provided the greatest punch in midfield so far on tour, but Tuipulotu has developed a deep understanding with Scotland team-mates Jones and Finn Russell, who is a certainty to feature at fly-half.
Owen Farrell and Marcus Smith have been pushing hard for inclusion on the bench.
'We have got such quality across all positions so we would be lying if we said selection was easy,' Wigglesworth said.
'The selection meeting was conversational as it has been the whole way through the tour. Everyone is able to voice an opinion and is willing to be challenged. Then we come to a decision.'

Jack Conan says nerves mounting as Lions prepare to name first Test team

Six matches into their tour, all of them producing wins except the Dublin curtain-raiser against Argentina, and the Lions management have finalised selection for Saturday's series opener at Suncorp Stadium. The players will be told who has made the matchday 23 at a meeting on Wednesday and Conan believes the performances delivered over the last four weeks have not made selection easy. Tuesday Training 🏉 T minus 4 days to the 1st Test 🇦🇺🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 15, 2025 'Everyone will be a bit nervous, but everyone has gone incredibly well, especially in the back row,' said Conan, who is expected to be named at number eight when the team is officially announced on Thursday. 'It's tough for the coaches, I'm sure, and hopefully we've given them plenty of headaches over the last while. No matter who's been out there, they've taken their opportunity really well. 'It's about those lads who get to run out at the weekend to do right by the lads who aren't playing. 'It's going to be unbelievably special to play the first Test so hopefully everyone can make the most of it.' No area of the team has been more competitive than the back row, with Conan the closest thing to a certainty given he is the only specialist number eight in the 44-man squad in Australia. England duo Ollie Chessum and Tom Curry just hold the edge in the race to be picked as flankers, but Farrell is blessed with options in both positions. 'There's huge amounts of class and talent in the back row. It's been great to get to know the lads, to learn off them, to see how they do things and to push each other on as well,' Conan said. 'That level of talent pushes everyone on to be your best and I think everyone has been at their best. No one can say they've been poor over the last few weeks. 'Especially in the back row, the standard has been unbelievably high, so it's been a joy to play with the lads and get to know with them.'

Tyson Fury told to forget about boxing return after Oleksandr Usyk defeats

Fury recently announced his return to the ring - but a boxing legend is adamant the two-time world champion will never come back British boxing icon Amir Khan has cast doubt on Tyson Fury 's return to the ring after suffering consecutive defeats at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk. Fury faced off against Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight crown in May 2024, where he was narrowly edged out by a split decision. In their rematch seven months later, despite an improved performance from Fury, Usyk once again emerged victorious on points. Just a few weeks after the second bout, the 'Gypsy King' announced his retirement, but over the last few months, he has hinted at a potential return to the ring. Earlier this month, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh confirmed Fury's boxing comeback, posted: "The 'Gypsy King' will be back! ! ! I talked with him, and I have his word to have him in Riyadh Season in 2026. We have a rabbit to hunt!" Despite this announcement, Khan remains sceptical about Fury's return to action. In a chat with Genting Casino, the ex-light-welterweight world champ expressed his doubts: "I don't think Tyson Fury will ever come back in my opinion. I don't think he'll come back. If he fights Usyk, I think Usyk wins that fight easily again. Maybe easier than the last two," reports All Out Fighting. 'Usyk has got his number, he just knows how to beat him and how to do well against him. Usyk obviously has the confidence and then you've got Tyson going off and being inactive. Usyk is still active, he's still training, still fighting, whereas with Tyson he's taking too much time out, and you're only getting older and slower, you're aging. You're not performing the same. And that's when ring rust is going to kick in as well.' It seems as if both Fury and Usyk will clash for a third time following Alalshikh's post that the latter will be making a stunning comeback in 2026. After going 24 rounds with the Ukrainian, the 'Gypsy King' remains adamant that he at least won the rematch back in December. 'My last fight was a clear f****** victory for The Gypsy King. Anybody in boxing can see that. A complete load of dogs ***," he said. 'I want a fair fight, I don't want any favours, I want a fair fight and a fair result. Which I know I didn't [get]. I thought I won it by five rounds. I watched it 250 times. Each way I never see it as a way for him to win. They can do what they want. If they say it's Tuesday it's Tuesday.' When is Tyson Fury's next fight? Following the announcement of his return to the ring, British boxing sensation Fury revealed that his third bout with Usyk is set for 18 April 2026 at Wembley Stadium. The 36-year-old shared a fight poster featuring him and the Ukrainian on Instagram, captioning it: "April 18, 2026 Wembley Stadium. The trilogy! UK. contact @spencerbrownmrgoldstar for tickets." In response to Fury's post, Sergey Lapin, head of Team Usyk and CEO of Ready To Fight, issued a statement: "The idea of a third fight with Tyson Fury has been on the table between our teams ever since their second bout. And I have never had any doubt that, together with Goldstar Promotions, we could turn it into a reality." He continued: "Right now, both Oleksandr Usyk and our team are fully focused on the upcoming fight with Dubois on July 19 and on achieving the historic goal of becoming a three-time undisputed world champion. As you've probably noticed, focus and total commitment are at the core of the champion's and the team's strategy. When this goal - three-time undisputed - is accomplished, and the dust settles, we'll be open for the next round."

Daniel Dubois told the one thing he must do to surpass Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua

Boxing legend Amir Khan has expressed his doubts that Daniel Dubois will surpass the achievements of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, even if he becomes the first man to defeat Oleksandr Usyk. Dubois is eager to even the score with Usyk as they are set to clash on Saturday night at Wembley Stadium. The Brit suffered his second professional career defeat to Usyk back in 2023 when 'Triple D' was stopped by the heavyweight legend in the ninth round - just moments after a knockdown was denied. Since his loss to Usyk, the 27-year-old has been on a winning streak. He enters the showdown following a spectacular knockout victory over Joshua last September - but is fully aware of the tough challenge ahead on Saturday night. Usyk remains undefeated in his professional career and the 38-year-old is full of confidence after securing consecutive victories over Fury last year. Despite a potential surprise win over the Ukrainian, Khan does not believe a victory for the Brit will eclipse the accomplishments of Joshua and the 'Gypsy King,' reports All Out Fighting. In an interview with Genting Casino, the former light-welterweight world champion said: "If Dubois wins it's hard to say he surpassed AJ and Tyson Fury because he's just done it in one fight, whereas these guys have been fighting for many years. They've been fighting and having these wars with the Wilders and all of these, so it's hard to say that. But If he keeps on winning, he can. Khan has laid out the blueprint for Dubois to eclipse the success of British heavyweight greats, stating that a victory over Usyk and several other big names could do the trick. "If he beats Usyk this time and he has to maybe have three or four more good named fighters he has to beat, and then I think he surpasses," he added. Regarding his official prediction for the upcoming heavyweight dust-up, Khan believes Dubois has absolutely no chance of beating the Ukrainian on home soil. "Power doesn't matter to him," he said. "Size doesn't matter to that guy. He's just a good overall boxer and knows how to use his hands. He will hit you with shots that you're not going to see." The 38-year-old British boxing legend added: "And he then follows them shots up, so yeah, even if it goes to 12 rounds, I got Usyk winning that fight because Dubois's going to try to pot shot him all the time. So I don't give Dubois any chance, I'm sorry.' When is Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois? Fight fans can mark their calendars for the highly anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois, slated for Saturday, July 19, at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Streamed exclusively live on DAZN PPV, the action-packed evening is priced keenly for enthusiasts across the globe – £24.99 for UK viewers, $59.99 stateside, and a regional equivalent of $19.99 elsewhere. DAZN's coverage is set to get underway at about 5:30pm BST with the preliminary bouts kicking off shortly after at approximately 5:40pm BST. As night falls, predictions point to Usyk and Dubois making their grand entrance at around 9:45pm BST.
