Tyson Fury told to forget about boxing return after Oleksandr Usyk defeats

Daily Mirror16 hours ago
Fury recently announced his return to the ring - but a boxing legend is adamant the two-time world champion will never come back
British boxing icon Amir Khan has cast doubt on Tyson Fury 's return to the ring after suffering consecutive defeats at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury faced off against Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight crown in May 2024, where he was narrowly edged out by a split decision. In their rematch seven months later, despite an improved performance from Fury, Usyk once again emerged victorious on points.
Just a few weeks after the second bout, the 'Gypsy King' announced his retirement, but over the last few months, he has hinted at a potential return to the ring.
Earlier this month, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh confirmed Fury's boxing comeback, posted: "The 'Gypsy King' will be back! ! ! I talked with him, and I have his word to have him in Riyadh Season in 2026. We have a rabbit to hunt!" Despite this announcement, Khan remains sceptical about Fury's return to action.
In a chat with Genting Casino, the ex-light-welterweight world champ expressed his doubts: "I don't think Tyson Fury will ever come back in my opinion. I don't think he'll come back. If he fights Usyk, I think Usyk wins that fight easily again. Maybe easier than the last two," reports All Out Fighting.
'Usyk has got his number, he just knows how to beat him and how to do well against him. Usyk obviously has the confidence and then you've got Tyson going off and being inactive. Usyk is still active, he's still training, still fighting, whereas with Tyson he's taking too much time out, and you're only getting older and slower, you're aging. You're not performing the same. And that's when ring rust is going to kick in as well.'
It seems as if both Fury and Usyk will clash for a third time following Alalshikh's post that the latter will be making a stunning comeback in 2026. After going 24 rounds with the Ukrainian, the 'Gypsy King' remains adamant that he at least won the rematch back in December.
'My last fight was a clear f****** victory for The Gypsy King. Anybody in boxing can see that. A complete load of dogs ***," he said. 'I want a fair fight, I don't want any favours, I want a fair fight and a fair result. Which I know I didn't [get]. I thought I won it by five rounds. I watched it 250 times. Each way I never see it as a way for him to win. They can do what they want. If they say it's Tuesday it's Tuesday.'
When is Tyson Fury's next fight?
Following the announcement of his return to the ring, British boxing sensation Fury revealed that his third bout with Usyk is set for 18 April 2026 at Wembley Stadium. The 36-year-old shared a fight poster featuring him and the Ukrainian on Instagram, captioning it: "April 18, 2026 Wembley Stadium. The trilogy! UK. contact @spencerbrownmrgoldstar for tickets."
In response to Fury's post, Sergey Lapin, head of Team Usyk and CEO of Ready To Fight, issued a statement: "The idea of a third fight with Tyson Fury has been on the table between our teams ever since their second bout. And I have never had any doubt that, together with Goldstar Promotions, we could turn it into a reality."
He continued: "Right now, both Oleksandr Usyk and our team are fully focused on the upcoming fight with Dubois on July 19 and on achieving the historic goal of becoming a three-time undisputed world champion. As you've probably noticed, focus and total commitment are at the core of the champion's and the team's strategy. When this goal - three-time undisputed - is accomplished, and the dust settles, we'll be open for the next round."

Florian Wirtz about to answer key Jurgen Klopp question after 'insane' Liverpool decision

Florian Wirtz missed Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Preston North End but fans have now been given their first glimpse of the £116million signing with his new team-mates Florian Wirtz has been pictured training for the first time since Liverpool shattered the British transfer record to sign him. Wirtz, 22, moved to Anfield last month after Liverpool reached a £116million agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, beating both Manchester City and Bayern Munich to his signature. ‌ The Reds have agreed to pay an initial £100m plus £16m in potential add-ons. Wirtz put pen to paper on a five-year contract and has a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders thanks to his price tag. ‌ Fans had hoped to see the playmaker during Sunday's pre-season friendly against Preston North End. But unlike Liverpool's other new signings - Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Freddie Woodman - Wirtz didn't feature in the 3-1 victory in order to manage his fitness after he played for Germany in the Nations League last month. ‌ When he does eventually make his bow in a red shirt, it'll be interesting to see where he fits in. Liverpool romped to the Premier League title during Arne Slot's first season as manager and improving their starting lineup is a tall order. Jurgen Klopp believes that Wirtz is good enough to break into Slot's first XI but just where he'll do that is a mystery to him. Asked whether the former Leverkusen star will be able to establish himself on Merseyside, Klopp replied: "Yes, although of course I don't know exactly which position Arne has in mind for Florian. "He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen." ‌ Wirtz was seen smiling at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby on Tuesday, the first time that he's been spotted with his new team-mates. The 22-year-old already knows Frimpong, who he played alongside at Leverkusen. Liverpool will jet off for their pre-season tour of Asia next week, with Wirtz expected to be on the plane ahead of clashes with AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos. That's before Slot's squad face Athletic Bilbao in two fixtures on the same night back at Anfield next month. ‌ Wirtz's competitive debut is likely to come against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Saturday, August 10. The Germany international will have the spotlight on him after Klopp labelled his fee 'insane'. "There's no question about it, that's an insane sum," the former Reds boss admitted. "We all agree that we're talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I'm out if we pay 100m euros for a player. "But the world keeps changing. That is how the market is. My part of football will always remain the game itself, but if you want to play at the top level, you can't train all your players yourself. Sometimes you need to get hold [of players from] somewhere else."

Alexander Isak has made Liverpool feelings clear as Reds plan record move for Newcastle star

Alexander Isak is firmly on Liverpool's radar as they prepare to make a move for the Newcastle ace, worth well over £100million, with the Swede previously lauding Anfield Newcastle star Alexander Isak is firmly on Liverpool's radar and the Swede previously made it clear how much he adores playing at Anfield. Since moving to England in 2022 he's only had limited opportunities to play on Merseyside, but it has left its impression. ‌ Isak scored on first appearance there early in his Newcastle days and now the Reds are preparing another club-record bid to lure the striker. Liverpool have already spent upwards of £200million this summer but it is understood they are ready to test Newcastle's resolve. ‌ The Times claim Newcastle are braced for an official offer from Liverpool, which could be in the region of £130m as they look to land one of Europe's most sought after strikers. ‌ Isak has never expressed any desire to leave Newcastle, but it remains to be seen if he has his head turned. He scored against Liverpool when they won the Carabao Cup at Wembley last year but has years to run on his deal at St James' Park. The striker moving would require Liverpool to break the British-transfer record for the second time in a matter of weeks having already signed Florian Wirtz, but Isak's words may give them some encouragement. He said: "There are not many places like St James' Park. The atmosphere is very special and I think you can judge a stadium, not just on the atmosphere but how difficult it is to come as an away team. It's a special place. I think people have a hard time coming to the stadium." ‌ Unprompted the Swede then also underlined his admiration for Liverpool's iconic ground. He said: 'I'd say Anfield is probably up there as well," Isak added. "The atmosphere is really good - it's probably the toughest away game.' Newcastle have maintained that their top players are not for sale - and retaining them has been made easier following a season where they won a trophy and returned to the Champions League. Isak, as well as Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, have been linked with moves away in the past, but the club have no intention to sell and want to bolster their ranks with their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike underlining their ambition. Despite that Eddie Howe admitted he wouldn't give guarantees about who would still be at Newcastle come the new season. The manager said back in May: "I never make those guarantees about any player. It's not to do with Alex's future, I'd be foolish to sit here and do anything like that." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
