MLB honors Hank Aaron with recreation of record 715th homer during All-Star Game
The lights went down at Truist Park and fans stood holding their cell phone lights following the sixth inning of Tuesday night's All-Star Game. The scene from April 8, 1974 at old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was projected on the infield and also shown on the video board.
The high-tech images of Aaron and other players were seen on the Truist Park infield before a blaze of a fireball launched from home plate to signify the homer that pushed Aaron past Babe Ruth's record of 714 homers.
Aaron's widow, Billye Aaron, stood and waved as the cheers from the sellout crowd of 41,702 grew louder.

One year ago, MLB celebrated the 50th anniversary of Aaron's homer with announcements for a new statue at Baseball's Hall of Fame and a commemorative stamp from the U.S. Postal Service.
Also, Commissioner Rob Manfred helped honor Aaron in Atlanta last year by joining the Braves in announcing the $100,000 endowment of a scholarship at Tuskegee University, a historically Black university in Aaron's home state of Alabama.

Manfred noted the Henry Louis Aaron Fund, launched by the Braves following Aaron's death in 2021, and the Chasing the Dream Foundation, created by Aaron and his were designed to clear paths for minorities in baseball and to encourage educational opportunities.
Aaron hit 755 home runs from 1954-76, a mark that stood until Barry Bonds reached 762 in 2007 during baseball's steroid era.
Aaron was elected to the Hall in 1982. A 25-time All-Star, he set a record with 2,297 RBIs. He continues to hold the records of 1,477 extra-base hits and 6,856 total bases.

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Olympic ski cross medalist Audun Groenvold has died after being struck by lightning, the Norwegian ski federation announced Wednesday. He was 49. Groenvold won bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games. 'It is with great sadness that we have received the news of Audun Groenvold's untimely passing,' the federation said. 'The former national Alpine skier and ski cross athlete was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip.' The federation said Groenvold was 'quickly taken to hospital and received treatment for the injuries he sustained in the lightning strike' and then died Tuesday night. Groenvold was a member of Norway's Alpine skiing team before he moved into freestyle and ski cross. He had one podium finish as a World Cup Alpine skier, finishing third in a downhill in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. He also won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships, and the overall ski cross cup in 2007. After his career ended, he became a national team coach and a TV commentator. Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham undergoes shoulder injury and set to miss early part of season
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham underwent shoulder surgery Wednesday and is expected to miss the start of the La Liga season. The club said in a brief statement that the England international needed surgery 'to address recurrent dislocation of his left shoulder.' The procedure was 'successful,' it added. 'Bellingham will now undergo a period of rehabilitation, prior to returning to training and starting his recovery,' the club's statement said. Madrid did not say for how long Bellingham will be sidelined, but Spanish media reported he could be out two to three months. Madrid opens its La Liga campaign on Aug. 19 against Osasuna. Atletico Madrid signs American midfielder Johnny Cardoso to continue boosting its squad
MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid continues to boost its squad for next season, signing young American midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. The 23-year-old Cardoso arrived on a five-year contract, Atletico said Wednesday. Cardoso was born in the United States but is of Brazilian descent and has an Italian passport, meaning he doesn't occupy a non-European Union slot in Diego Simeone's squad. The holding midfielder played in Brazil until moving to Betis in the 2023-24 season, where he became an important player for Manuel Pellegrini's team. Cardoso made his senior debut for the United States in a match against Wales in 2020. He has 22 caps, winning the CONCACAF Nations League in 2023 and 2024.
