JAKARTA: Top nickel ore producer Indonesia revoked permits for four mining firms in Raja Ampat in its easternmost region of Papua, the country's energy minister said on Tuesday (June 10), after concerns about their environmental impact sparked a public outcry.
Protests against mining in Raja Ampat, a picturesque Unesco-designated Global Geopark known for its marine biodiversity, dominated Indonesian social media last week, with users sharing a graphic of the area's blue waters with the hashtag #SaveRajaAmpat.
Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia's energy minister, said President Prabowo Subianto decided to revoke the permits of the four nickel companies in the area starting on Tuesday in order to protect the surrounding environment from further damage.
"We need to protect these areas by paying attention to marine life and conservation," he said.
The nickel companies are PT Nurham, PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining, PT Anugerah Surya Pratama, PT Mulia Raymond Perkasa, which operate on islands in and around Raja Ampat.
The government did not grant quotas to the four companies as they failed to meet administrative requirements, Bahlil said, meaning they are currently not in production.
However the permit of another nickel miner, PT Gag Nikel, a subsidiary of state miner Aneka Tambang (Antam), was not revoked as the company operates outside the designated geopark, Bahlil said.
Gag Nikel, the only company in the area in production, has a quota to mine 3 million metric tonnes a year. Last week, Indonesia's energy ministry temporarily halted the firm's mining activities following the protests.
The energy ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday on whether that suspension had been lifted.
Bahlil said the government would monitor its activities "exhaustively", including its regulatory practices.
Antam said last week Gag Nikel had replanted forests and conserved coral reefs.
PT Wanxiang Nickel Indonesia, the parent company of Anugerah Surya Pratama, Gag Nikel, and Kawei Sejahtera Mining did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. Reuters could not immediately reach Nurham and Mulia Raymond Perkasa for comment.
The controversy flared up last week when Greenpeace activists staged a small demonstration at a mineral conference in Jakarta, citing mining activity around Raja Ampat.
Mining caused the destruction of more than 500 hectares of forest and native vegetation, as well as damaging coral reefs and marine ecosystems on some islands, Greenpeace said later in a statement. - Reuters

Adobe shares slide as investors skeptical of quicker AI-adoption returns

FILE PHOTO: Adobe logo is seen in this illustration taken February 16, 2025. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo (Reuters) -Adobe's shares dropped 7% in early trading on Friday as investors' concern that the company's AI adoption into its software tools could take longer to fetch returns, overshadowed a raised annual revenue forecast. "(We see) increasing concerns surrounding competitive pressures and a longer time horizon to reach notable AI monetization," said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research. The San Jose, California-based creative software veteran is relied on by creatives for its tools including Photoshop and Premiere Pro. The company said in April that it would add AI models from OpenAI and Google to Firefly, its generative AI tool. The tool allows users to create and edit images and videos for commercial purposes through basic text prompts without facing copyright challenges. "While guidance was raised and management remains positive around demand generation, it feels like it will take more time to prove out these (AI) initiatives and quiet concerns of competition around GenAI," RBC analysts said in a note. Adobe now expects full-year 2025 revenue between $23.50 billion and $23.60 billion, up from its prior estimates of $23.30 billion to $23.55 billion. At least five brokerages cut their price target on the Adobe stock following the second-quarter results. Including session's losses, the stock has fallen around 13% so far this year. The company's 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at 18.88, compared with Autodesk's 29.16. (Reporting by Twesha Dikshit in Bengaluru; Editing by Shailesh Kuber)

South Korea agrees to cut Indonesia share in fighter jet project

JAKARTA/SEOUL (Bloomberg): Indonesian and South Korean officials have signed a revised deal that significantly lowers Jakarta's financial commitment to the joint KF-21 fighter jet program, a move aimed at reviving long-stalled progress on the multibillion-dollar project. South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration said Friday that the new deal reflects a resolution made last year to revise Indonesia's share of the development costs. In August, DAPA had said Indonesia would contribute 600 billion won to the project, equivalent to about US$438.4 million, marking a drop from 1.6 trillion won originally pledged. DAPA said Indonesia's defense ministry had begun administrative procedures to fulfill the revised payment, a step it said it expects will reinvigorate defense ties between the countries. It added that both sides also agreed to expand cooperation beyond fighter jets to include ground and maritime systems. Indonesia's defense ministry declined to immediately comment. The new deal comes years after defense officials from Southeast Asia's largest economy agreed to contribute roughly 20% of the more than 8 trillion won project as it sought to upgrade aging military fleets. The KF-21 Boramae, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries, is intended to replace South Korea's fleet of F-4 and F-5 fighter jets. Indonesia is working on a localized variant known as IF-X, with state-owned Dirgantara Indonesia involved in assembly, maintenance, and production planning. Progress for the KF-21 program, aimed at producing a next-generation supersonic aircraft, was marred by funding disputes and other problems. Indonesia has been pursuing upgrades of its fleet of fighter jets on several fronts, including in an active contract with France's Dassault Aviation SA for 42 Rafale jets, signed in 2022 with an estimated value of $8.1 billion. Last week, Indonesian defense officials said they were in the early stages of evaluating an offer for China's J-10 fighters. This week, Turkey's president announced a deal to sell Jakarta 48 of its KAAN fighter jets currently under development. DAPA Director Seok Jong-gun, among the South Korean officials in Indonesia this week, said his visit marked a return to normal for defense ties between Seoul and Jakarta, moving on from what he described as a period of strain due to technical issues. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.
