Previously announced deals include to Italy (Lucky Red), Portugal (Alambique), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Aerofilms), Hungary (Vertigo), Eastern Europe (HBO Europe), Estonia (Filmstop), ex-Yugoslavia, Israel (Lev) and Middle East (Falcon Films).
The film was pre-acquired by Pyramide Distribution for France, which has set a September release, and Progress Film for Germany.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by physicist and Gulag survivor Georgy Demidov, the film is set in the Soviet Union's era of Great Terror, or Great Purge, in the late 1930s, in which Joseph Stalin consolidated his power by either killing or incarcerating political opponents in harsh labor camps.
The film focuses on a young prosecutor who sets out to challenge a system during this period after discovering a letter from a prisoner who is a desperate plea for help.
Deadline critic Damon Wise noted the contemporary resonance of the story, calling the film 'a bleak warning from history' in his review, adding it held 'relevance to every country wrestling with authoritarian political parties right now.'
The film is produced by Kevin Chneiweiss for France's SBS Productions, alongside Loznitsa's Netherlands-based banner Atoms & Void.
Additional producers include Germany's Looks Film, Latvia's White Picture, Romania's Avanpost Media, and Lithuania's Studio Uljana Kim. SBS International is handling rights for the U.S. and U.K.
Loznitsa, who is best known for his politically charged documentaries and strong fictional narratives, most recently presented his documentary The Invasion in the Special Screening Section at Cannes 2024.
His past feature credits include My Joy (Cannes Competition 2010), In the Fog (Cannes Competition 2022), A Gentle Creature (Cannes Competition 2017) and Donbass (Best Director, Cannes Un Certain Regard 2018).

GOBankingRates had a fine time finding some of the most unhinged money hacks on Reddit. Please, dear reader, don't try some of these at home. Getting Creative on Marketplace When members of the Ask Reddit community were asked about how they'd make money in a pinch, two people shared their very unique money-making hack, which fused creativity with a dash of duplicity. Redditor stonedfishing had a very simple plan to make a few extra bucks: 'Find rocks on the beach, spray them with clearcoat, and sell them on marketplace as artisanal decorations.' So, if you bought any decor from stonedfishing, you probably could have done this yourself for less money. Not to be outdone, _coffee_ shared that they did a similar thing with old wooden doors. Strip off the hinges and knobs, give them a good clean or polish, and voila, you can sell 'em as tabletops. Now that is some rustic chic. But Redditor duyli was undaunted — and frankly, unhinged — in their suggestion for saving money on utilities: 'Unplugged my fridge in winter. Nature's cold, why pay twice?' Saving a buck is great, but there are some things you do need to splurge on — and proper food sanitation is one of them. If you nosh on certain kinds of unrefrigerated foods, you could end up spending everything you saved on utilities bills, and then some, on a hospital stay. So, um, please don't try this. Highway to the Danger Zone? You can also put this tip firmly in the 'do not try this at home — or anywhere' category. When Redditors were asked how they save money while traveling, people in one thread shared a rather unconventional tip — traveling to a global geo-political hot spot to save money on tickets while avoiding long wait times and benefiting from enhanced security. 'I booked Peru early 2023 when all that political stuff was going down,' HappyPenguin2023 recalled. 'Got super cheap prices and everything had settled down by the time we went in July — but crowds were still really low!' Another user chimed in, sharing that, by booking their travel to Bogota during huge protests, they were able to save 60% on hotel costs. That's One Way To Earn Credit Card Points Once upon a time, Redditor Perfect_Zone_4919 had a perfect scheme for racking up those valuable credit card points: 'Shut down now, but I used to buy golden dollar coins from the mint with a credit card. They had free shipping and no tax because they wanted to get them in circulation. As soon as they arrived, I'd cash them in at the bank and repeat. Built up huge reward points on my card.' Avoid Those Check Bag Fees by Any Means Necessary Redditor kacombs may say that they look like 'an eccentric weirdo at the airport' but one person's eccentricity is another person's thriftiness. And this Redditor will go to some fashion extremes to save money on checking a bag: 'I always wear several layers of clothing to avoid checking a bag (even when it's hot) and I always wear my biggest pair of shoes (usually hiking boots). I also wear a fanny pack under my sweatshirt/coat and sometimes I stuff a neck pillow (or even just regular pillowcase) with clothes,' they wrote. 'Most airlines have policies to not charge for a pillow and it's honestly none of anyone's business whether my pillow is filled with down/fiberfill or cotton and polyester lol.' Is this comfortable? Of course not, but to make it bearable, they'll hide tote bags to switch up items. Oh, and they've also been known to put clothes and other items in a plain brown paper bag, making it seem like they've gone shopping at the airport to avoid those bag check fees. Quentin Tarantino finally reveals why he ‘pulled the plug' on ‘The Movie Critic' as his 10th and final film
Been there, done that. Director Quentin Tarantino, 62, has finally revealed why he decided to scrap 'The Movie Critic' as his 10th and final film. 'No one's waiting for this thing, per se,' the famous filmmaker began on Friday's episode of 'The Church of Tarantino' podcast. 'I mean, I can do it whenever I want. I mean, it's already written. 'The Movie Critic,' which the 'Pulp Fiction' director announced in March 2023, started as an eight-part series before Tarantino reworked the script into a feature-length film. 'It's a little crazy to listen to podcasts and hear all these amateur psychiatrists psychoanalyze as if they f–king know what they're talking about about what's going on with me, about how I'm so scared, alright, of my 10th film,' Tarantino said. ''Oh my god! Oh my god! I'm so fragile about my legacy. What's going on? I'm paralyzed with fear!,'' he concluded. 'I'm not paralyzed with fear. Trust me.'

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington reunite for the fifth time in Highest 2 Lowest, a modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's revered 1963 thriller High and Low. Set in present-day New York, Lee casts Washington as David King, a music mogul pulled into a high-stakes ransom plot. Today's theatrical release arrives after the film premiered at Cannes Film Festival, where it earned a six-minute standing ovation (and a rare Rihanna red carpet appearance). This marks Washington and Lee's first film together since 2006's Inside Man, a collaboration Washington says was built on deep mutual trust. 'There was only one person to do this. And I'm sitting next to him,' the actor recently told Vanity Fair. Lee approached the project as 'a jazz reinterpretation of a great film,' adding, 'I knew if I was to do this, it had to be a reimagining. And it was right up my alley—a big, fat, juicy one coming down the middle of the plate. And I feel like I knocked it out.' Washington sees the project as long overdue in his career. 'In [most of] the time I've been an actor, I wouldn't even have been allowed to play a part like this. No white directors were hiring us, and no studios were hiring us,' he told Vanity Fair. 'That's why I called Spike. I trust Spike, and he trusts me.' Lee hopes audiences catch the film on the biggest screen possible. 'No matter how big that TV on the wall in your home is, see it in theaters first,' he says. Washington added, 'In the theaters, in the theaters, in the theaters. I'll keep saying August 15.' Not yet, but soon. After debuting in theaters today, the film will land on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5, 2025, just 19 days later. Until then, you'll need to catch it during its theatrical run.
