Khelo India Youth Games Day 7: Harsabardhan, Asmita set national youth records in weightlifting; Parth clinches silver
Barely 10 days after winning medals for India in the World Youth Weightlifting Championships in Lima, Peru, Harsabardhan Sahu and Jyoshna Sabar claimed a gold each for Odisha at the Khelo India Youth Games Bihar Day 7 on Saturday.
Harsabardhan, a Khelo India Athlete from Ganjam district who will turn 16 on May 22, doubled his joy with two National Youth Records in the boys 49kg class competition. He rewrote the National Youth Marks for Clean and Jerk and Total with lifts of 115kg and 203kg respectively after an 88kg lift in Snatch. The previous records were set by Jharkhand's Babulal Hembrom last year.
Hailing from Gajapati district, the 16-year-old Jyoshna, who has a hat-trick of medals in the IWF World Youth Championships including a bronze in Lima on April 30 and is the reigning Asian Champion in the girls 40kg class, was head and shoulders above the rest of the field and did only what was needed to win gold for her State.
Late in the evening, Maharashtra's Asmita Dhone and Uttar Pradesh's Manasi Chamunda rewrote National Youth Records in Snatch, Clean and Jerk and Total in the girls 49kg class competition. Asmita conceded the Snatch record to Manasi who cleared the barbell loaded at 75kg but brooked no challenge in Clean and Jerk.
However, by the time she entered the fray with the load at 91kg, Manasi had claimed the National Youth record for total with 163kg. But that was shortlived as Asmita bossed the Clean and Jerk with lifts of 91kg, 95kg and 97kg. Each lift helped her raise the National Youth mark for total while the last two lifts were records for Clean and Jerk.

Maharashtra had added two gold medals to its collection earlier on Saturday – Akanksha Kishore Vyavahare opening its account in the Weightlifting arena after left-handed Kavya Bhatt claimed the girls singles Table Tennis crown – it was firmly entrenched at the top of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar medal tally with 27 gold, 21 silver and 24 bronze for a total of 72 medals.
Maharashtra has won nearly twice as many gold medals as its nearest rival, Karnataka. Punjab lifted itself to the fifth place on the medal table behind Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, thanks to gold medals from its Skeet shooters, Harazeez Singh Atwal and Risham Kaur Guron. Punjab has six gold, the same as Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Manipur but has more silver medals than them.
Away from the rush for a place in the top five, Delhi and Assam were delighted to add a gold medal each on Saturday. Delhi's 25m Pistol shooter Naamya Kapoor emerged on top, winning a tough competition with Anjali Bhagwat (Madhya Pradesh) by one point while Assam's gold came through Priyanuj Bhattacharyya in the boys singles final.
Hosts Bihar lost two sepak takraw finals. In girls' doubles final, Bihar lost the gold to Nagaland after leading 11-4 in the decider. Bihar sniffed victory at that stage but some errors, possibly forced by an anxiety to close out the contest, saw it lose 15-7, 11-15, 13-15.
In the boys' doubles final, Assam beat Bihar to the sepak takraw gold. Assam won the first set 15-9 but the second went all the way to the wire. Bihar saved two match points as Assam converted the third to win 17-15 and the gold.
With 19 medals (three gold, eight silver and eight bronze), Bihar is back in the top half of the medals charts.
With only 13 gold medals on offer on Saturday and with its most rewarding sport, Swimming, having concluded, Karnataka was delighted to secure its first gold medal from another sport. Naraen Pranav Vanitha Suresh finished with one point more than Maharashtra's Parth Mane to win the boys 10m Air Rifle crown after a heady contest.
On Saturday, it could not be denied that Harsabardhan's third lift in the Clean and Jerk, which gave him two National Youth Records at once, remained the biggest moment of the day – and possibly the Khelo Indian Youth Games 2025 Bihar thus far.

Rajasthan men's team finishes runners-up in 12th Beach Kabaddi Championship
Jaipur: The Rajasthan men's team performed brilliantly and showed their skills to bag the silver medal at the 12th Beach Kabaddi Championship which concluded in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Anuj, Jai Bhagwan, Vijendra, Mahendra, Rajiv and Jitendra represented the Rajasthan squad in the five-day tournament. Sohanlal accompanied the team as coach, while Kailash Chand Saini was the manager. The president of Rajasthan Kabaddi Association (RKA), Tejaswi Singh Gehlot said that the team made a great start by defeating West Bengal by a margin of 50-25 in its first match. In the second outing, Rajasthan edged past Goa 40-36 to enter the knockouts. Rajasthan continued their domination and ousted Delhi 50-39 to storm into the semi-finals. Rajasthan had to stretch them fully to overcome the stiff challenge from Haryana in the semis but managed to win 37-34 to enter the final. However, hosts Andhra Pradesh halted the dream run of Rajasthan in the summit clash. The home team registered a hard-fought 42-32 win to clinch the title. On this occasion, president of Rajasthan Olympic Association and RKA chief Tejaswi Singh Gehlot congratulated the players and wished them a bright future. He informed that earlier the men's team had triumphed in the 38th National Games in Haridwar. They also bagged the silver medal in the Khelo India which was held in Diu, Gujarat. This achievement of the Rajasthan team will increase the enthusiasm of the budding state players towards the kabaddi game.

WFI hands temporary suspension to 30 overage wrestlers, bars them from junior competitions
New Delhi, Cracking down the whip on overage wrestlers competing at junior level, the Wrestling Federation of India has handed temporary suspension to 30 of them in the past month after investigating more than 400 such cases. The WFI acted on complaints, largely from coaches and wrestlers from the Delhi 'Akharas' that many wrestlers from Haryana have procured fake certificates to show they were born in the national capital and are eligible to compete at junior level. Much to the exasperation of WFI, two overage wrestlers even won medals at the recent Khelo India Games in Bihar. "We do not want to spoil careers of wrestlers, so we have just barred them from the junior level competitions, like U18 and Cadets. They should compete at the senior level, if they are over 18 they must represent their original state," a senior WFI official told PTI. "Now they need to come to WFI, apologise for their actions and cheating. We will consider their cases. This has been going on for some time. One by one we suspended around 30 such offenders in the last 30-40 days." The WFI official explained that most of these wresters, misguided by their coaches in Haryana, paid bribes to procure fake birth certificates from the Narela and Rohini zones in Delhi. "Out of 436 cases, around 300 were from the Narela zone, while the rest were from the Rohini zone like Sultanpuri and Mangolpuri. Most of them were getting certificates from Begampura. "All of them wanted to represent Delhi since getting selected in Haryana teams is not easy. We approached MCD and the Delhi cantonment Board after receiving complaints and upon investigation and verification it was proved they were fake certificates," the official said. "Actually the coaches are to be blamed. They wants their wards to win medals at competitions to become famous. That greed drives them to have overage wrestlers competing at junior level," he added. Then WFI had also complained to the Games Technical Committee of the Khelo India to get a female wrestler thrown out of competition for submitting a fake birth certificate. "This female wrestler had submitted a certificate issued by Delhi Cantonment Board. When we approached the Board, they confirmed to us that no such certificate has been issued by them." Explaining the modus operandi, the WFI official said that the wrestlers pay hefty sum to cyber cafe owners to create fake bar codes on the certificate. Anyone who scans the certificate will get details as they were filled by the cafe owners, making the certificate appear original. Also, the WFI has decided not to consider birth certificates, issued only recently. Coach suspended on sexual harassment complaint =============================== Meanwhile, the WFI has suspended Sanjay Lather, a Haryana coach, after receiving a sexual harassment complaint against him during the Khelo India Games. "We had received a complaint that this coach, who was appointed by the state government, had entered the room of a female wrestler after the competition ended. "The Internal Complaints Committee duly investigated the matter and decided to terminate him from all wrestling activities for life," the official said.

This venue is notable for being part of the 3.5 km Chennai Formula Racing Circuit, which hosted an exhilarating night street race in August 2024, adding a thrilling motorsport legacy to the location.
