Ferrari Target Le Mans Hat-Trick as 2024 Race Begins Saturday
FERRARI'S FORMULA One fortunes may be flagging but the Italian constructor start this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour Race as favourites targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport's fabled endurance classic.
Roger Federer is acting as celebrity starter with the tennis icon getting the 93rd edition of the jewel in four-wheeled endurance racing's crown underway at 1600 local time (1400GMT) on Saturday.
Twenty-four hours later, through daylight, darkness and dawn, the 21 elite Hypercars will battle it out over 300 laps (4,000 kilometres plus) in front of a sell-out 320,000 crowd burning the midnight oil with copious quantities of coffee and beer.
Ferrari made a triumphant return after a 50 year absence to land Le Mans' centenary race in 2023, repeating the feat last year.
The Prancing Horse stable ended Toyota's run of five consecutive wins from 2018 to 2022 with the Japanese manufacturer out to reclaim their crown 40 years after their first Le Mans appearance.
A shake-up in the regulations for 2023 sparked fresh interest in the premier class and this year Ferrari, Toyota and Porsche face challenges from Aston Martin, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, and Peugeot.
Ferrari's position as the team to beat is bolstered by their bright start to the season, reeling off wins in the first three world endurance races in Qatar, Imola and Belgium.
But Antonio Fuoco, who took the chequered flag 12 months ago along with Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, is taking nothing for granted.
'Compared to last year, everyone is closer to the other, it's going to be a tough battle,' forecast the 29-year-old Italian driver.
Ferrari team manager Batti Pregliasco is wary of the threat posed by Toyota.
'The idea of winning a third Le Mans in a row would be magnificent,' he said.
'But the Toyotas are very strong here because they have the experience, the ability, and the means to win.'
'Bitter-sweet'
Nyck De Vries was sharing driving duties in the Toyota that came off second best in 2024, and the 30-year-old Dutchman is hungry for revenge.
'Finishing second last year was a great result but after such a long race, with so many different emotions, it felt bitter-sweet, so we want to put that right this year,' said De Vries, summarily sacked by Red Bull's then Alpha Tauri sister team midway through the 2023 F1 season.
De Vries is one of a cluster of former F1 drivers including former world champion Jenson Button seduced by the lure of adding their name on the hallowed Le Mans roll of honour - just as Fernando Alonso did in 2018-19 for Toyota, the veteran Spaniard emulating the likes of F1 greats from yesteryear like Graham Hill, Phil Hill and Jochen Rindt.
Joining the 21 Hypercars are 17 entries in the LMP2 class and 24 in the LMGT3 category in an event that has been visited by tragedy over the years, with 22 drivers perishing.
Le Mans, where eye-watering speeds of up to 400kmh have been reached on the Sarthe circuit's Mulsanne straight, marks the 70th anniversary of the 1955 disaster this weekend when pieces of debris from Pierre Levegh's car rained down on the crowd, killing 81 spectators, although a definitive death toll was never established.
A sombre reminder then of the dangers faced by the 186 drivers taking part -- including the all women 'Iron Dames' LMGT3 team of Sarah Bovy, Rahel Fry and Celia Martin.
The encouraging news for this brave bunch is that the French met office forecast looks benign, with no rain or storms predicted over the weekend which kicks off with qualifying for pole on Thursday night.

Wang, a university graduate from Fujian province in southeastern China, stated he has offered rides to six women so far, mostly after work, frequently taking them on scenic coastal drives. 'Many of them open up about their relationships, and I help them understand their boyfriends' behaviours,' he explained. One woman, heartbroken after a break-up due to infidelity, cried in his car for half an hour. She thanked him afterwards and gave him a polite hug. 'I believe a lot of people need this kind of support from strangers. A car can be a comforting space,' Wang remarked. He plans to take over his family's business by the end of the year, but for now, he is using this time to practise driving and meet new people. However, some netizens have expressed safety concerns, noting that drivers could learn the home addresses of women living alone. Hamilton slams Ferrari exit rumours as ‘nonsense', backs Vasseur to lead team to the top
MONTREAL, June 13 — Lewis Hamilton yesterday slammed Italian media speculation that Ferrari are poised to dismiss team boss Fred Vasseur and that he is considering his future with the team as total 'nonsense'. The seven-time world champion asked reporters to 'stop making stuff up' as he delivered an impassioned response to the reports on the eve of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, an event he has won a record-equalling seven times. 'To everyone that's writing stories of me considering not racing, I've literally only just started with Ferrari,' he said during a news conference at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. 'I'm here for several years. I'm here for the long haul so there's no question about where my head's at and what I'm working towards achieving with this team. 'There are zero doubts so, please, stop making up stuff.' Italian media stories had suggested Vasseur was responsible for the team's disappointing start to the season when they had been expected to challenge McLaren for the championship. After nine races, with Hamilton, 40, brought in as a marquee signing to lead a title bid, the team languish 197 points behind McLaren in the teams' title race while Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are winless in a drivers' championship led by the two McLaren drivers. Hamilton said: 'I was made aware of this just before I got here so I've not read the stories and it's definitely not nice to hear that there are stories like that out there. 'Firstly, I love working with Fred. Fred's the main reason I'm in this team and I got the opportunity to be here, for which I'm forever grateful, and we're in this together. 'We're working hard in the background. Things aren't perfect, but for me, as I've said, I'm here to work with the team, but also with Fred. 'I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top. So this, ultimately, is nonsense what people have written.' Vasseur exit 'not on cards' When asked about the possible exit of Vasseur, he added: 'I don't think that's on the cards as far as I'm aware and it's certainly not something I would be supportive of. 'So that's not part of the discussion. I'm here to win with Fred and he has my full support.' It's always 'do this' or 'be that', while not getting the space to explore our passions, our dreams, and who we really are. So when Farah Irdina got behind the wheel of a race car for the first time, it triggered something inside her that she could never shake off, and she took off at lightning speed – towards the finish line, and towards becoming who she really is – a racer. 'I want to be known as a fast driver. I want to be known for what I'm good at, not for the fact that I'm a girl in the industry.' Farah Irdina. Farah Irdina. Returning from the UK only last month after completing her law degree, Farah is now on track to focus on where her heart truly lies. Farah Irdina. She was in equestrian for over a decade before she ever did anything remotely close to race. 'It's a different kind of horsepower,' she said, her warm sense of humour shining through. When I asked her how she felt behind the wheel, she said: 'I feel calm. All I think about in that moment is just that: the moment. I don't think about anything else. I love that razor sharp focus that I can only get when I race.' Farah's racing journey officially began in June 2023, when she competed in her very first karting race. Farah Irdina. Farah Irdina. Representing Axle Motorsport – founded by none other than former Malaysian F1 driver Alex Yoong – she made an impressive debut in the Asian Endurance Series (AES), securing fourth place in Round 2 at the Pinnacle Karting Circuit. Fast forward just one year later, and she's already stacking podiums. In June 2024, she clinched first place in the SWS Round 5 Sprint at Morac Go Kart Track in One Utama. Not only that, she also won the SWS Woman Category at the same track, where she was voted Driver of the Day – proof that her name is already being spoken with admiration in the scene. She followed that up with a second-place finish in SWS Round 6, also at Morac. But karting was only the warm-up. Farah Irdina. By February 2024, Farah began her circuit racing journey. Despite never having driven a manual car before, she dove right in with testing under Axle Motorsport in a Proton Saga. She prepped by practicing gear shifts on a simulator, using every tool at her disposal to make the leap onto the track. In March, she entered her first circuit race at the Malaysia Speed Festival (MSF) Saga Cup Round 1 at Sepang, where she placed 10th out of 18 – an impressive start for a total newcomer. Things escalated quickly from there. In June, she got the opportunity to test a Honda Jazz GK with Piston Project at Sepang Circuit, and by July, she had stepped up to race in the MSF Super Series Round 3 under the same team. Come September, she made her debut in the prestigious Malaysia Championship Series Round 4 300KM Race, once again in a Honda Jazz GK, finishing 13th out of 18. She even took her skills overseas – joining a Formula Woman trackday in the UK in November 2024 where she drove a BMW M2 at the Snetterton Circuit. Farah Irdina. Farah Irdina. In December, she qualified 16th out of 40 in the Formula Woman Nations Cup at the Dubai Autodrome, behind the wheel of a Radical SR3 XXR, despite it being her very first time driving a radical. Farah Irdina. On top of all that, Farah's been gaining traction outside of just racing. Porsche Malaysia invited her to their first Sim Racing competition and the Porsche Carrera Cup event. She also collaborated with RedBull for a MotoGP campaign, and this June, she's flying to the UK as part of the huge milestone in her growing career. And she's only 26. Currently, Farah is competing in the Thailand Super Series (TSS) as the only Malaysian female driver , racing in the Super Touring Category under Fire Monkey Motorsport from Hong Kong, and partnered with Wing Hin Motorsport – one of Malaysia's top racing outfits. Farah Irdina. She just completed Round 1 in Buriram this past May, and is preparing for Round 2 in July at the iconic Bangsaen Street Circuit – a challenging 3.7km track with 19 corners and a breathtaking seaside backdrop. But she will not be able to compete in Bangsaen and the remaining 3 rounds of the race without support in the form of sponsors and partnerships. Racing isn't just about speed – it's about sustainability. Sponsorship is key. Last year's Bangsaen race alone reached over 2 million viewers via the TSS Facebook page, making it prime real estate for sponsors to place their logos on her car, helmet, or suit – offering massive brand visibility and marketing potential. The final round of the race will bring things full circle at the Sepang International Circuit in September 2025. 'It's really hard to find sponsors, honestly. It's even more difficult because I am a girl, and sometimes even the people closest to me don't show their support for something that I wholeheartedly love.' Racing is always seen as the adrenaline-pumping, testosterone-fueled sport that's more commonly associated with men, and so women in motorsports aren't taken seriously enough. Farah Irdina. There's this assumption that you have to 'man up' to survive in racing. But honestly, my strength comes from being me. And yes, that includes being feminine. Farah. She's had experiences where men hit her up on and off track, agreeing to sponsor her only if she agrees to go out for drinks with them. 'And the men in racing don't get that. They don't have to deal with all this.' On top of all that, because the circle of women racers is so small, more so in Malaysia, she has also faced unsolicited criticism from other women drivers that pit against her and each other. 'I don't think this is what the industry needs at the moment. We should ride on each other's successes, uplift each other. How else do we expect to grow?' But thankfully, it's not all bad news.
