Fire dept receives 42 integrity-related complaints as of May
KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) Integrity Unit has received 42 integrity-related complaints, involving its officers and personnel, as of May 2025.
Its director-general, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad, said the highest number of complaints fell under misconduct, with 22 cases, followed by power abuse (eight), sexual harassment or scandal (four), enforcement issues (four), corruption (three) and misappropriation (one).
He added that the misconduct cases included five related to disciplinary issues, three cases of domestic violence, three involving misuse of social media; two cases each of a lavish lifestyle, fraud, and loan issues; as well as one case each of vandalism and negligence in duty, with three falling under other categories.
"Although we received 42 complaints related to the integrity of our officers and personnel, the department views these reports positively, as they serve as a preventative measure to curb future misconduct.
"In fact, thanks to these complaints, we've observed a significant drop in disciplinary actions with only 13 cases recorded this year, compared with 55 last year," he said.
He said this to reporters after officiating a talk on governance, integrity and anti-corruption, at the Kelantan National Department for Culture and Arts Complex in Tanjung Chat, on Thursday (June 5). Kelantan JBPM director, Farhan Sufyan Borhan, also attended it.
Nor Hisham said that out of the 13 disciplinary actions recorded this year, 11 involved absence from duty–a shift from previous years, where drug abuse was the most common offence among officers and personnel.
"We also observed an increase in complaints filed through the e-aduan portal and the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA), with 95 cases recorded last year, compared with 87 in 2023.
"Of these, 60% were internal complaints, while the remaining 40 per cent came from the public. Appropriate action has been taken on all issues raised," he said. – Bernama

Underground blast near sewer startles Bukit Minyak residents, no injuries reported, says Penang Fire Dept
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — People in the Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak area were startled today by an underground explosion near a sewer line, which released smoke into the air. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations, John Sagun Francis, said an emergency call was received at 2.46 pm, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found that the explosion had occurred near a sewer line and detected a gas odour at the site. Witnesses also reported seeing smoke. Firefighters conducted a size-up and measured the surrounding air quality, including pH levels,' he said in a statement today. The operation was supported by the Hazardous Materials unit from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station. Tests showed that the pH level of the liquid in the sewer was neutral. Further checks confirmed that the sewer line belongs to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and the company has been notified to take further action. The operation concluded at 4.38 pm, and no injuries were reported. — Bernama

5 family members killed in Jerantut crash
KUANTAN: Five members of a family were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Jalan Jerantut Feri, Jerantut, around midnight last night. Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said the incident, which occurred around midnight, involved a Perodua Bezza and a Toyota Alphard. He said three men and two women, aged between 17 and 26, who were travelling in the Perodua Bezza, died at the scene. Two of the victims were trapped inside the vehicle, while the other three were thrown out due to the impact. "The victims in the Toyota Alphard comprised two men and one woman, all of whom sustained injuries," he said in a statement today. He added that initial investigations revealed the Toyota Alphard was travelling from Pulau Tawar to Jerantut, while the Perodua Bezza was on its way from Bota, Perak, to Jerantut. Mohd Razam said firefighters used rescue tool equipment to extricate the trapped victims, and all five deceased were handed over to the police for further action. He added that the three injured victims were transported to a nearby hospital by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) ambulance. – BERNAMA
