3AW Weekend Breakfast Darren James recovering from heart surgery
Beloved Melbourne radio presenter Darren James has undergone heart surgery in Melbourne.
The long-time 3AW identity, and host of Weekend Breakfast and Sunday Morning, had double bypass surgery and a heart valve repair on Tuesday after Dr Ross Walker, who also appears on 3AW, encouraged him to get a calcium test.
The test results were higher than expected and further tests revealed James had blockages that needed urgent medical intervention.
'He had no obvious indications that he had heart problems,' James's daughter Alice said.
'His message is even if you are feeling well and healthy like he was, get your heart checked.'
Alice said her father was out of ICU and recovering well in hospital.
'He is in very good spirits, all went very well,' she said.
'He is just going to take it easy. He will be off-air for six weeks and this will probably be the longest break he has ever had from 3AW in 30 years.'
Even in hospital footy is not far from the mad Magpies' fan's mind.
'He has asked every single nurse if they barrack for Collingwood,' Alice said.
'I was visiting him and one of the nurses asked if he had any allergies and his response was 'only to Carlton supporters'.'
Speaking of Carlton, former Carlton star Glenn Manton is filling for James on 3AW while he is recovering.
Weekend Breakfast listeners flooded the radio show with emotional messages of support and concern for James, who earlier in his career was Melbourne radio's 'Love God' on an FM station, when Manton explained the much loved presenter's absence on Saturday morning.
