Delhi: Sarita Vihar flyover to be repaired, hit traffic
The carriageway from Badarpur to Ashram will now be shut for repairs, PWD officials said, adding that they started the long-pending repair work in October 2024, but paused it midway due to rising pollution levels and subsequent enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (Grap) to mitigate dust in Delhi-NCR.
Traffic Police said they have made all necessary arrangements and deployed at least 50 additional staffers at the flyover to regulate traffic flow.
'The work had stopped due to the election, model code of conduct and some weather conditions. Then fresh permissions were sought for traffic restrictions before starting work,' a PWD official said.
The Sarita Vihar flyover, which connects Delhi with Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Faridabad in Haryana and pockets of southeast Delhi, will undergo its first major repair in 24 years. The flyover is located on the Mathura Road. PWD had announced it would undertake repairs in 2023, but work has been delayed multiple times over the past two years due to a multitude of issues, such as untimely publication of traffic diversion advertisements in newspapers leading to withdrawal of clearance from traffic police, Lok Sabha elections, Kawar Yatra and rising pollution.
After pausing work last October, PWD shut parts of the flyover for repair work. The first phase of the repairs is complete, said PWD officials, citing repairs on the carriageway from Ashram to Badarpur.
Alternative routes announced
According to information shared by the traffic police, people travelling from Badarpur in southeast Delhi to south Delhi and onwards to Faridabad, will face traffic congestion near Mathura Road.
A senior police officer said that hour-long jams may be recorded in areas of Sarita Vihar, New Friends Colony, Okhla, and Govindpuri.
In an advisory, the Delhi Traffic Police said that the carriageway from Badarpur to Ashram will remain closed and asked commuters to avoid the affected stretch.
The police said, 'Vehicles moving from Badarpur border and heading towards Ashram via Mathura Road may use two alternate routes.'
Commuters from Badarpur border can use the MB Road to move towards Pul Prahladpur and Lal Kuan, and then make a right towards Maa Anandmai Marg, Crowne Plaza, Govindpuri, and further use the Modi Mill flyover to reach the Mathura Road and then Ashram.
The police said that besides, commuters can also use the slip road adjacent to the Sarita Vihar flyover, turn left for Okhla, move towards Crowne Plaza and onwards to Govindpuri, where they can turn right towards the Modi Mill flyover to reach Mathura Road.
Traffic officials said movement of heavy and commercial vehicles on Mathura Road from Badarpur towards Sarita Vihar flyover will be restricted.
Motorists have been facing traffic woes in and around Kalindi Kunj, Mathura Road and Sarita Vihar due to curbs imposed for the Kanwar Yatra over the past week. The repair work will further exacerbate motoring issues for two more weeks.
Ananya Sen, 29, who works near Moolchand Hospital, said, 'We have already been facing problems because of the Kanwar route. I have to go to Sarita Vihar and there's absolutely no traffic management by the police. This is going to be the same as when government was repairing Chilla flyover. We will have to suffer 1-2 hours waiting in cars or autos...'

Reconstruction, beautification work of Betim ferry ramp begins
Panaji: Following the successful development of the Ribandar ramps and the introduction of Ro-Ro ferry boats, the river navigation department (RND) has turned its focus on the Betim-Panaji route, which sees nearly 10,000 commuters daily. The river navigation department officially launched the reconstruction and beautification project of the Betim ferry ramp on Thursday. These new ferries, designed specifically for the Panaji-Betim route, will have the capacity to carry up to eight cars or 200 passengers and are expected to reduce vehicular load on roads, especially during peak hours. PWD forms special team to coordinate Sabarimala pilgrimage preparations
A special core team has been formed within the Public Works department (PWD) to coordinate preparations ahead of the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season, Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas has said. The team will be headed by the PWD Secretary and will include the Additional Secretary, KSTP Project Director, KRFB (PMU) Project Director, Chief Engineers of Roads, Bridges, National Highways, and Design, as well as the Managing Directors of RICK, Pratheeksha, and Ashwas. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting to assess pre-pilgrimage season work. Every Chief Engineer has been asked to review preparations in a specific district. In addition, special inspection teams have been set up for every district and these are expected to submit their reports by August 25. These inspections will continue throughout the pilgrimage season. Executive engineers of the Roads Division have been tasked with coordinating the activities of all wings at the district level. Mr. Riyas has instructed that all ongoing works be completed in a time-bound manner. He also stressed the timely completion of technical approvals, tendering processes, and related administrative steps. All roads must be fully motorable before the pilgrimage season begins, he said. Safety inspections Reports of regular accidents on certain roads were raised at the meeting. The Minister directed that safety inspections be conducted immediately on such roads and that road safety measures be ensured. Mr. Riyas said that it was important to have signages in multiple languages since pilgrims are expected to arrive in large numbers from various States. Roadside vegetation should be cleared to ensure safe passage for pedestrians. The Minister also instructed that street lighting and drainage systems be made fully functional and efficient. Works on bridges Rest houses should be equipped with all facilities. Bridge railings and related infrastructure must be well-maintained. The Minister said that the works on bridges be expedited and completed without delay . Health Minister Veena George; Chief Whip N. Jayaraj; Mathew T. Thomas, K.U. 243 out of 359 blocked roads reopened; IASofficers to give one day's salary to CM fund
Dehradun: Out of the 359 blocked roads on Thursday, the Public Works Department (PWD) was successful in opening 243 roads for traffic movement. Efforts are continuing at a rapid pace to clear the remaining 116 blocked routes, officials said. PWD minister Satpal Maharaj said out of the 116 blocked routes, included one national highway, 11 state highways, nine main district roads, two other district roads, and 93 rural roads. A total of 514 machines have been deployed at various critical and potentially blocked locations to ensure the availability of routes for smooth traffic. "Executive engineers in all disaster-affected areas, including Dharali and Harsil, have been instructed to prioritize clearing the blocked routes," he added. Maharaj said that due to heavy rains, landslides have caused road blockages in several areas of the state. "Officers and employees from the PWD, National Highways, BRO and PMGSY are working tirelessly, using various machines to clear these roads," he added. He mentioned that continuous efforts are being made to quickly restore connectivity, communication networks and other links in disaster-affected areas.
