Time of India3 days ago
Panaji:
Following the successful development of the Ribandar ramps and the introduction of Ro-Ro ferry boats, the river navigation department (RND) has turned its focus on the Betim-Panaji route, which sees nearly 10,000 commuters daily.
The river navigation department officially launched the reconstruction and beautification project of the Betim ferry ramp on Thursday.
The reconstruction includes illumination, toilet facilities, seating arrangements, paver blocks, and other amenities aimed at improving passenger convenience.
The project is being executed by the PWD on a funds deposit basis, with an estimated cost of Rs 73 lakh.
The project was inaugurated by river navigation minister Subhash Phal Dessai in the presence of Porvorim MLA and minister for tourism, Rohan Khaunte.
Additionally, two new, larger ferryboats have been ordered for the Betim route and are expected to be commissioned by Dec 2025, coinciding with the Betim project's expected completion.
The construction of two larger and faster twin-screw ferry boats has commenced at Vijay Marine Services, Loutolim. These new ferries, designed specifically for the Panaji-Betim route, will have the capacity to carry up to eight cars or 200 passengers and are expected to reduce vehicular load on roads, especially during peak hours.

Commuters express frustration as Pune shivneri bus takes longer than shared cab

Mumbai: Travelling by the Mumbai-Pune Shivneri may not be a pleasant and comfortable experience. Recently, passengers were left fuming as the journey was delayed by over two hours to travel from Mumbai to Pune on this popular intercity AC bus. "It is a complete waste of time. A shared cab would have cost Rs 400 but reached in three hours. Instead, I was sitting inside the bus, which halted at many stops en route, and the wait time was longer as well. It reached Pune in five and a half hours," recalled a passenger who boarded the bus from Dadar. "Why are there too many stops in Mumbai before the bus hits the Expressway? And then, a 20-minute scheduled halt on the Expressway?" he said. A passenger said that the bus is also not good compared to the Rs 590 fare one pays for the journey. "Imagine there is a road with no traffic jams, and the bus still prefers to halt for a long duration in Mumbai after leaving Dadar depot. It's frustrating," the passenger recalled. Sources said that the bus keeps waiting for passengers en route if seats continue to remain vacant after leaving Dadar depot. When contacted, an MSRTC official said that the matter will be looked into. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The official further said that if one booked a Pune bus via Atal Setu, there were no issues or complaints. "We have found that buses using the route through Vashi bridge-Nerul-Kharghar are facing this problem of unwarranted stoppages en route," he said. The MSRTC wants to deploy more buses on the Atal Setu to expedite journeys for passengers in the near future. It may be recalled that a few months ago, 12 passengers of a Mumbai-Pune Shivneri bus escaped unharmed in a mishap in which the bus climbed on the road divider in Sion. The e-Shivneri bus started from the Dadar bus stand around 5.30 am, and when it was crossing the flyover near Sion police station, the bus swerved a bit and jumped on the divider. While the exact cause is not known, officials said that the driver was not drunk nor "half asleep" when the incident occurred, an MSRTC official claimed after the incident. The driver was, however, taken off duty for 10 days. Passengers have also complained in the past about a few cases of drivers speaking on mobile phones. 103% rise in booking e-tickets in Khurda Road rly division in 1st quarter: Data

Bhubaneswar: Use of paperless general and platform tickets through the unreserved ticketing system (UTS) on the mobile platform has seen a 103% rise in the first quarter of 2025-26 compared to the similar period in 2024-25, according to latest data released by the Khurda Road railway division. The railway division oversees major stations like Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda and Berhampur. From April to June, the division issued 1.83 lakh paperless general and platform tickets, compared to 90,005 tickets issued in the first quarter of 2024-25. "Because of the rise in booking paperless tickets, stations are now witnessing a reduction in queues for unreserved tickets at booking counters," said an official. During 2024-25, the division issued 5.35 lakh paperless general and platform tickets through the UTS on mobile, serving over 22.41 lakh passengers and generating a revenue of Rs 4.76 crore. In 2023-24, it issued 2.56 lakh tickets for 14.81 lakh passengers, generating Rs 2.82 crore in revenue. In 2022-23, around 1.27 lakh tickets were issued for 8.95 lakh passengers, generating Rs 1.53 crore. "This year-on-year growth shows that people want hassle-free services without standing in queues for platform or general tickets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This exponential growth is attributed to wider public acceptance, user-friendly technology and enhanced payment options such as UPI-based QR code transactions, leading to shorter queues and faster processing," read an official statement. The statement said passengers can now book journey, season and platform tickets directly from their smartphones, leveraging the UTS on mobile platform, eliminating the need for ticket printouts. "The app is available in Hindi, English, and regional languages, ensuring ease of use even for first-time users. Tickets are delivered directly to the app and can be shown to ticket-checking staff using the 'show ticket' option — no hard copy needed," an official source said. An official said passengers can now book unreserved tickets up to three days in advance for journeys above 200km and purchase half-yearly and yearly season tickets, apart from platform tickets, with ease. "The app supports multiple digital payment methods and is compatible with Android, iOS and Windows smartphones," the official added.
