Cherokee County officers celebrated for outstanding service
The annual Cherokee County Law Enforcement Awards Banquet took place Thursday night (5/15) at Bethel Church in Baxter Springs.
Agencies represented were Columbus, Galena, Baxter Springs, and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
The event, which includes dinner and the awards ceremony, allows each agency to recognize those who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Sheriff Brian Henderson made this an annual event in 2023, when he was chief of police in Baxter Springs.
'It's not just administration picking somebody, it's their peers that are selecting them and saying, 'hey, this person deserves it.' And that's important to us,' said Sheriff Henderson.
'You look back at your accomplishments and just to know that you're your friends that you work with every day have recognized your efforts that you're out there doing, because a lot of times, that stuff goes unnoticed, and so it's a good opportunity for them to see that they're appreciated,' said Galena Police Chief, Chad Allison.
Each agency gave out various awards Thursday. Those included Officer of the Year, Deputy of the Year, and a life-saving award.

Air conditioning units stolen from Wichita church
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Four air conditioning units were stolen from a Wichita church. It occurred at the Greater St. Mary's Baptist Church, located in the 1600 block of E. 17th Street. The theft occurred on July 16 as the church was experiencing the worst of the summer heat. The pastor said the theft is a huge loss. 'Some people that are in wheelchairs and stuff like that, this is a lot more for them to try to get over here too to the service and like yesterday we had to have a funeral for one of our members at another church simply because our church was not available,' Pastor Willard Dallas said. Flooding possible through early Monday The church filed a police report for the theft, but it is not confident the units will be recovered. Dillard says the church has raised thousands with the help of individuals to replace the units. The church has set up a GoFundMe to help with the replacement of the units. Mobile man hospitalized after gunshot wound

Gunfire strikes Mobile home, vehicle
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Two homes and a vehicle were struck by gunfire on Jackson Road. According to a release from the Mobile Police Department, officers were called to the 1100 block of Jackson Road for a report of a shooting on Sunday, Aug. 10, at around 5:34 p.m. UPDATE: 2 dead, 1 hospitalized after industrial incident in Mobile When the officers arrived, they found that gunfire had struck two homes and a vehicle.
