3 killed as Colombia shaken by wave of deadly explosions amid political unrest
The attacks hit Cali – the country's third-largest city – and several nearby towns, targeting police stations and other municipal buildings.
The head of police, Carlos Fernando Triana told La FM radio that assailants had attacked targets with car bombs, motorcycle bombs, rifle fire and a suspected drone.
'There are two police officers dead, and a number of members of the public are also dead,' he said.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks, but guerillas who broke away from the once-powerful Farc militia are known to operate in the area.

Triana suggested the attacks may be linked to the third anniversary of the killing of Farc dissident leader Leider Johani Noscue, better known as 'Mayimbu.'

The 39-year-old conservative senator, a grandson of former president Julio Cesar Turbay (1978-1982), was shot in the head and leg on June 7 at a rally in the capital Bogota by a suspected 15-year-old hitman. Despite signs of progress in recent weeks, his doctors on Saturday announced he had suffered a new brain hemorrhage. "Rest in peace, love of my life," his wife Maria Claudia Tarazona wrote on Monday morning in a post on Instagram. "Thank you for a life full of love." Authorities have arrested six suspects linked to the attack, including the alleged shooter, who was captured at the scene by Uribe's bodyguards. Following a nationwide manhunt, police announced the arrest of an alleged mastermind behind the attack, Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, alias "El Costeno." Police have also pointed to a dissident wing of the defunct FARC guerrilla group as being behind the assassination. Writing on X, left-wing President Gustavo Petro, of whom Uribe was a fierce critic, said the government's role was to "repudiate of ideology" and assured the safety of Colombians was his top priority. "Today is a sad day for the country," Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez said on social media. "Violence cannot continue to mark our destiny. Democracy is not built with bullets or blood, it is built with respect, with dialogue." Uribe had fiercely criticized Petro's strategy of "total peace," based on engaging all Colombia's remaining armed groups, including drug traffickers, in dialogue. He announced in October that he would seek to succeed the term-limited Petro in the May 2026 presidential election. Uribe was elected to Bogota's city council at age 26, later becoming its youngest-ever chairperson and then the mayor's right-hand man. In 2019, he unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Bogota, but three years later, he was elected a senator – receiving the most votes of any candidate in the country. In recent months, Petro, a former left-wing guerrilla, has been accused of dialing up the political temperature by labelling his right-wing opponents "Nazis." He was 39. Advertisement Uribe, from the right-wing opposition, was shot in Bogotá on June 7 as he was giving a speech at a rally, in an attack that shocked the nation. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, announced his death on social media. 'I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you,' she wrote. The capital's Santa Fe Foundation hospital – where supporters held regular vigils during his treatment – said over the weekend his condition had worsened because of a haemorrhage in his central nervous system. Former President Álvaro Uribe, the leader of the senator's Democratic Center party and no relation to the deceased lawmaker, wrote on social media that 'evil destroys everything; they killed hope'. Father of children rescued in Colombian jungle in 2023 is jailed for sex abuse
Around two years after the spectacular rescue of four siblings from the Colombian rainforest, the father of the two younger children has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for sexual abuse. The public prosecutor's office on Saturday said the man raped his eldest stepdaughter several times from the age of 10. Following the crash of a small plane in southern Colombia in 2023, the four siblings, aged 13, 9, 5 and 1, spent 40 days in the rainforest until they were finally found by a search party made up of military personnel and indigenous people, in a case that made headlines worldwide. The man who has now been sentenced was involved in the search for his children and stepchildren. The children's mother, the pilot and an indigenous leader were killed in the accident.
