Colombian presidential hopeful Uribe dies 2 months after shooting

Colombian Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe, who was shot in the head at a campaign event two months ago, died in the early hours of Monday, his family and the hospital treating him said. He was 39.

Uribe, from the right-wing opposition, was shot in Bogotá on June 7 as he was giving a speech at a rally, in an attack that shocked the nation.
His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, announced his death on social media. 'I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you,' she wrote. 'Rest in peace, love of my life, I will take care of our children. I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you.'
The capital's Santa Fe Foundation hospital – where supporters held regular vigils during his treatment – said over the weekend his condition had worsened because of a haemorrhage in his central nervous system.
Former President Álvaro Uribe, the leader of the senator's Democratic Center party and no relation to the deceased lawmaker, wrote on social media that 'evil destroys everything; they killed hope'.

'May Miguel's fight be a light that illuminates Colombia's right path,' added the former president, who was sentenced by a judge earlier this month to 12 years of house arrest for abuse of process and bribery of a public official.

China v Canada water polo match in Brazil halted by gunfire, players take cover

Brazilian police have said there were no injuries after shots were fired near an under-20 World Cup women's water polo game between China and Canada in the city of Salvador. China won 12-8 on Sunday, the opening day of the tournament, but footage showed the game being briefly interrupted as players got out of the pool, lay down and took cover by a small barrier after hearing gunshots outside the water polo venue in the Pituba neighbourhood. China led Canada 3-2 at the time. 'The match stopped for about a minute. Our team saw that the police was taking care of it,' Marco Antonio Lemos, head of the Bahia state water sports federation, said in a statement on Monday local time. Police said the cause of the shots was a confrontation with an alleged local thief who was outside the venue and tried to escape. No more details were given. Spectators were told about the incident after the game had resumed. Brazil is hosting the 16-team tournament for the first time.

3 dead in shooting at Target department store in Texas, suspect arrested

A gunman opened fire on Monday outside a Target department store in Austin, Texas, killing at least three people, and a suspect has been arrested, police said. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the suspect stole a car after the attack and fled the scene. He then crashed that car and stole another before being captured in south Austin, where he was taken into custody, she said during a news conference. Davis said responding officers found three people who had been fatally shot in the Target car park. 'This is a very sad day for Austin. It's a very sad day for us all and my condolences go out to the families,' she said. Davis said she had no information to release about the victims. Davis said the suspect is a white male who appears to be 32 years old and has 'a mental health history'.

New video appears to show Israeli settler killing unarmed Palestinian activist in West Bank

New video footage appears to show the moment a Palestinian activist was killed as an Israeli settler fired toward him during a confrontation with unarmed Palestinians in the occupied West Bank last month. The video released on Sunday by B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, shows Israeli settler Yinon Levi firing a gun toward the person filming. The footage cuts away, but the camera keeps rolling as the person moans in pain. B'Tselem says it obtained the video from the family of Awdah Hathaleen, 31, an activist, English teacher and father of three who was shot dead on July 28, and who they said had filmed it. Levi, who was shown firing his gun twice in a video shot by another witness and obtained by Associated Press, was briefly detained and then released from house arrest by an Israeli court, which cited lack of evidence. The shooting occurred in Umm al-Khair, a village that has long weathered settler violence in an area profiled in the Oscar-winning film No Other Land. Settler attacks on Palestinians have spiked since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war, as have attacks by Palestinian militants. Photo: dpa 'Awdah's killing is another horrific example of how Palestinians, both in Gaza and in the West Bank, are currently living without any sort of protection, fully exposed to Israeli violence, while Israeli soldiers or settlers can kill them in broad daylight and enjoy full impunity while the world watches,' said Sarit Michaeli, the international outreach director for B'Tselem.
