Netball: Tactix stalwart Jane Watson switches to Australia's Giants

Photo: Photosport Defender Jane Watson is the latest New Zealand netballer to confirm a move to Australia for the next Super Netball season. After 11 seasons with Mainland Tactix, including a championship-winning campaign this season, Watson will join the Sydney-based Giants in 2026. The 63-cap Silver Fern will play for the first time in the Australian domestic competition. Watson's "commanding presence, elite defensive skillset and calm leadership under pressure," has been highlighted by the Giants in a statement announcing her signing. Coach Nerida Stewart said Watson's signing was a significant addition to the squad. "Jane is such a respected figure in the game. She brings a wealth of experience, a calm presence and a real competitive edge that will really complement our group. "Her experience and calmness will be a great asset for our group, especially in high-pressure moments. She's the kind of player who leads by example, both on and off the court. "We're excited about the energy and professionalism she will bring to the team culture, and how she will contribute to our defensive end." Watson said she was excited for the move to Super Netball from the ANZ Premiership. "This marks a new chapter in my career and it's going to be a great opportunity to challenge myself, both on and off the court. "Change often brings growth and I'm really looking forward to testing myself in a new setting, working with different coaches and teammates, and continuing to evolve as a player and a person." Watson joins an exodus of New Zealand players - including current Silver Ferns Kelly Jackson , Maddy Gordon (both Queensland Firebirds) and Kate Heffernan (Adelaide Thunderbirds), as well as former Silver Fern Te Paea Selby-Rickit (Firebirds) - who will play Super Netball in 2026. Silver Ferns shooter Grace Nweke will also play another season with the NSW Swifts. Nweke's entry into Super Netball was a factor in Netball New Zealand changing its Silver Ferns eligibility rules .

Selby-Rickit joins exodus to Australia

The former Southern Steel and Silver Fern shooter, 33, was announced as the final signing for the Queensland Firebirds in Super Netball next season. Selby-Rickit, who has made herself unavailable for the black dress so did not require an exemption from Netball New Zealand, leaves the Mainland Tactix after winning the ANZ Premiership title this season. She studied at the University of Otago and played for the Southern Steel from 2011-19. She then moved to Christchurch where she has played for the past six years. Selby-Rickit debuted for the Silver Ferns in 2016 and has earned 66 caps, including winning the Netball World Cup in 2019 and bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. "I'm super excited to be joining the Queensland Firebirds.' "It's a new challenge that I'm really looking forward to. New team, new environment, and a great opportunity to play against the best." She joins Central Pulse defender Kelly Jackson and midcourter Maddy Gordon as the New Zealand internationals at the Brisbane team, coached by Kiwi Kiri Wills. Selby-Rickit will join Ugandan shooter Mary Cholhok in the circle and Australian Emily Moore. The Tactix have also farewelled former Steel defender Jane Watson, but there has been no word on her future. Steel midcourter Kate Heffernan has signed with the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Grace Nweke re-signed with the NSW Swifts.

Heffernan confirms move to Australia
Thunderbirds are go; Southern Steel co-captain Kate Heffernan is spreading her wings after signing with the Adelaide Thunderbirds for the 2026 season. The midcourter is the latest Silver Fern to be granted an exemption by Netball New Zealand to play in Australia's Super Netball next season. The 25-year-old is the Thunderbirds' final signing for 2026, making them the second team to finalise their roster after the Melbourne Vixens. 'I'm incredibly proud to play all of my ANZ Premiership games for my home team and this decision to take my netball in a new direction has not been made lightly," Heffernan said. "It will be so tough to leave my Steel family and I am grateful for everything the franchise has done for me. 'On the other hand, I am excited to see what the future holds in a new environment with the Thunderbirds. "The opportunity to experience the intensity of a new competition and different opponents can only enhance my netball even further and I'm ready to embrace the challenges ahead.' Heffernan will be out the front of the league's most formidable defensive circle in Jamaican internationals Latanya Wilson, Shamera Sterling-Humphrey — who is currently expecting her first child but is confirmed for 2026 — and Australian Diamond Matilda Garrett. Earlier this week, the Thunderbirds signed South African shooter Elmere van der Berg, and are also home to Diamonds attacker Georgie Horjus. The Thunderbirds, coached by incumbent Tania Obst, were back-to-back champions in 2023 and 2024 and finished third in the regular season this year. Heffernan has been an integral part of the Steel, playing 101 games since her debut in 2018. Originally stepping up as an injury replacement, Heffernan soon cemented herself as the starting wing defence, later shifting to centre. She stepped up as captain last season and has been co-captain alongside Silver Fern Kimiora Poi in 2025, where the Steel finished fourth. She debuted for the Silver Ferns in 2022 and has earned 39 caps, including playing at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the Netball World Cup in South Africa. Heffernan is the fourth Silver Fern confirmed to play in Australia next year. Midcourter Maddy Gordon has signed with the Queensland Firebirds and goal keep Kelly Jackson signed with the Brisbane team earlier in the week. Shooter Grace Nweke had re-signed with the NSW Swifts for 2026, after being named the team's MVP in her inaugural Super Netball season this year.
