Mpumalanga cops caught with dagga worth millions to appear in court
Three police officers, caught allegedly transporting dagga worth millions in Mpumalanga, are set to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 12 June. The trio, while in full uniform, were on duty and were found driving a marked police vehicle loaded with 107 bags of dagga.
The officers, attached to the White River Flying Squad and SAPS, and two others were nabbed on the N4 Road near Matsulu T-junction, on Tuesday, 10 June. Members of Matsulu SAPS received information about the dodgy activity and responded.
The accused face charges of corrupt activities and defeating the ends of justice. According to a statement from SAPS additional charges could also be added as the drug related investigation continues. In addition, internal disciplinary actions will also be instituted against the officers. Meanwhile, the two others are facing separate charges of dealing in the drugs.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi commented on the dagga bust and said justice must prevail.
'If any member is found to have been on the other side of the law, regardless of whether they are police officers or any law enforcement agencies, the law will have to take his cause without any fear or favour.'
Major General Dr Mkhwanazi also emphasised that there is no one that is above the law.
This is not the first incident where an officer was caught doing dodgy dealings.
The arrest comes a day after a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officer was arrested by the Hawks. The 43-year-old officer was arrested on charges of murder, kidnapping, and extortion.
The provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, said the kidnapping is alleged to have taken place on May 16 in Kraaifontein.
'The victim was last seen by a friend who reported that the victim went to Bellville to view a vehicle he intended to purchase and never came back. Instead, another friend of the victim received a call from the victim reporting that he had been kidnapped and was being assaulted,' Vukubi said.

Described as tall and light in complexion, Sibanyoni was last seen on May 25 wearing a blue shirt, brown trousers brown jacket, grey shoes and a black hat. This after four learners were on Wednesday arrested by Jozini SAPS for public violence, attack on police officers, and malicious damage to property following violent protests outside a indicate that high school learners from two schools marched to a third school and staged violent protests at the gate. eThekwini Municipality responds to sabotage claims in Zandile Gumede's fraud trial

Image: Nomonde Zondi The eThekwini Municipality has on Thursday stated that it has no intention to sabotage the R320 million Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender trial against its former mayor Zandile Gumede. Gumede is currently on trial with 21 others at the Durban High Court for numerous charges, including money laundering, racketeering, fraud, corruption, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act, relating to the tender. The Head of legal and compliance in the city, Malusi Mhlongo, said eThekwini was the complainant in Gumede's case. 'It is in our interest as the city for that matter to proceed,' he said. Mhlongo said there were accusations that eThekwini's City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) terminated the agreement of Integrity Forensic Solutions CC (IFS) and the Hawks to sabotage Gumede's case. He said that is not true, explaining that the agreement was entered before the former CIIU boss resigned. The IFS is the company that investigated the DSW tender irregularities after the CIIU anonymously received a stack of documents regarding the tender. In terms of that agreement, Mhlongo said the IFS was supposed to assist the Hawks and the prosecutors, and all their expenses were supposed to be paid by the municipality. Mhlongo stated that the reason the agreement between the CIIU, the Hawks, and the IFS was terminated was that the former acting head of the CIIU questioned why the municipality had to bear the costs while it was the complainant. As a result, the former acting head of CIIU terminated the agreement. He said the IFS took the municipality to court to review that decision. 'That matter is in court and it is still to be resolved,' Mhlongo added. Additionally, he said after the city reported Gumede's matter to law enforcement authorities, it was within its rights to save further use of ratepayers' money and say it's not liable for these costs because the State is now responsible for compensating the witnesses. Meanwhile, Gumede's case faced another setback on Thursday as the ninth accused, Bagcinile Nzuza, was ill. Nzuza is the wife of former city manager, Sipho Nzuza.
