Rested Crew take aim at Djordje Mihailovic, Toronto FC
After a longer than expected return to MLS play, the Columbus Crew hope the added time can help a revised roster regain momentum for the stretch run beginning Saturday at new-look Toronto FC.
Toronto (5-13-7, 22 points) will mark the home debut for U.S. men's national team midfielder Djordje Mihailovic after a trade with the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 7.
He had the second assist on the goal by DeAndre Kerr in second-half stoppage time that helped the Reds forge a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union last Saturday.
'He's very capable of finding windows very quickly and executing the right passes at the right weight,' Toronto coach Robin Fraser said of Mihailovic.
Toronto also may see the return to game action of goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who missed the match versus the Union while in concussion protocol. He returned to training on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the last league match for the Crew (12-5-8, 44 points) was a 3-1 home loss to Orlando City on July 25 in which they allowed three goals in the final 15 minutes.
Three Leagues Cup matches followed before the Crew were scheduled to play at New York City FC last Saturday. That match was postponed to Sept. 17 because Citi Field was unavailable due to poor field conditions.
During the Leagues Cup, defender Malte Amundsen returned for the first time since a knee injury on May 31 and midfielder Andres Herrera played twice after missing five MLS matches while a loan agreement was completed.
Also, on July 26, the Crew acquired forward Wessam Abou Ali as a designated player from Egyptian Premier League champion Al Ahly Sporting Club. He had 38 goals and 10 assists in 60 appearances for Al Ahly.
He arrived in Columbus on Wednesday but his status for Saturday is unknown.
Amundsen could key a resurgence for the Crew, who have allowed nine goals while going 2-2-0 in the past four MLS matches.
'We know what he can bring. Fans know what he can bring,' Crew defender Yevhen Cheberko said. 'He will definitely help us, and just more people for the rotation will maybe save some energy.'

A 1-1 deadlock was broken by Enrique in the 76th minute, just five minutes after the striker entered the match. Enrique received a pass from Martin Ojeda in the box, then created space amidst three Kansas City players before his left-footed shot found the back of the net. Enrique's eighth goal of the season was quickly followed by the first MLS goal of Rodriguez's career. Rodriguez's 83rd-minute tally came six minutes after the 21-year-old striker took the field. The Lions (13-6-8, 47 points) are 6-0-1 in their last seven matches in all competitions, including a four-match winning streak in regular-season action. Tyrese Spicer also scored for Orlando City, who moved up to a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with Saturday's win. Ojeda earned his 14th assist of the season on Enrique's goal. Ojeda has at least one goal or assist in each of his last 12 regular-season matches, tying him for the second-longest goal contribution streak in MLS history. Dejan Joveljic had the only goal for Sporting Kansas City (6-14-6, 24 points), who are 0-4-1 in their last five matches. The winless drought has dropped SKC eight points under the Western Conference playoff line. Orlando City came out firing after the long wait with Spicer's one-touch goal in the second minute. Saturday marked Spicer's first start and second overall match with the Lions since being acquired from Toronto FC in a trade on Aug. 1. After the early concession, Kansas City responded with about 25 minutes of sustained attack. Mason Toye was the driver of the offense, including a near-miss in the 20th minute and a hard shot that required a Pedro Gallese save in the 23rd. Toye's efforts paid off with the equalizer in the 25th minute, as the forward maneuvered around Gallese and fired the ball towards the open net. Just before the ball crossed the line, Joveljic tapped it over for something of a vulture goal, and the striker's team-leading 14th tally of the season.

Rafael Navarro brace leads Rapids to victory over Atlanta United

Darren Yapi added his seventh goal -- and his fourth in his last four games -- as the Rapids (10-11-6, 36 points) earned consecutive MLS wins for the first time since May 17 and 24. The Rapids have now scored 12 goals in their last five MLS games, their highest-scoring stretch this season, while moving up one spot to seventh in the Western Conference. Alexey Miranchuk scored his sixth goal of the season for Atlanta (4-12-10, 22 points), which saw its winless run stretch to 10 matches and remained winless on the road. Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan got a hand on both Navarro goals -- and probably should have stopped the second -- while Miranchuk unintentionally blocked a near-certain second Atlanta goal by Tristan Muyumba later in the second half. Navarro had been tied with Djordje Mihailovic with nine goals before the latter was dealt to Toronto FC in a cash trade earlier this month. Lionel Messi has goal and assist in return from injury
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi returned from injury for Inter Miami to chants of 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' in a 3-1 win over the the LA Galaxy on Saturday. It was the magic defender Maximiliano Falcón said the team has come to expect. 'We're used to this. You saw what he did, got the ball with a clear look at goal and scored,' Falcón said in Spanish. Even after a two game absence it was no surprise that Messi, MLS' top goal scorer, led Inter Miami to victory. He had been training with the team since midweek and coach Javier Mascherano confirmed he would be available for the weekend match. The Argentine superstar put in a 45 minute shift and his countryman Rodrigo de Paul assisted him as they beat the worst team in MLS. The two world champions did not participate in pregame warmups, but they did warm up before they entered the game at halftime to the raucous cheers of Miami fans. Messi injured his hamstring on Aug. 2 against Necaxa in a Leagues Cup match. Inter Miami reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals without him, but were defeated by instate rivals Orlando City 4-1 in MLS action.
