PATNA: Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, asserted on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party lacks the capability to secure electoral victories independently in India. He further stated that the
BJP
would be unable to pose a significant challenge to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during elections, and consequently cannot establish a government in the state.
"Iss janam mein BJP Bengal mein success nahi ho sakti, Mamata Banerjee ko challenge nahi kar sakti (BJP cannot succeed in Bengal in this life, it cannot challenge Mamata Banerjee). The BJP can never win elections alone in India. They can win only by keeping a gun on someone's shoulder. Wherever the BJP will not form the government, it wants to rule under President's rule," Pappu Yadav said.
In response to BJP's assertion about forming the government in West Bengal in the 2026 assembly elections, tensions have escalated.

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar has criticised chief minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging she pressured officials to return the victims despite their homes being destroyed, raising concerns about their displacement.
"Several incidents of this kind happened that day, and not just this, Hindus were held on gunpoint and forced to chant Islamic religious slogans. This will be the future of other Hindus who are staying in other parts of the state, who are thinking this problem is limited to Murshidabad. I want to ask about the whereabouts of the so-called intellectuals of Kolkata," Majumdar said.
On April 11, unrest erupted in the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district during demonstrations opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
The situation intensified, resulting in two fatalities, numerous injuries, and destruction of property, compelling thousands of residents to abandon their dwellings in search of secure locations.
The demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act extended to additional districts, including Malda, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly, where incidents of fire-setting, stone-throwing, and road barriers occurred.
In the aftermath of the unrest, numerous families abandoned their residences. A significant number relocated to the Pakur district in Jharkhand, whilst others found shelter in relief facilities established in Malda.

India's gross direct tax collections rise 4.86% to ₹5.45 lakh crore in FY26 so far, net collections dip – Here's why
The gross direct tax collections in India for the financial year 2025-26 rose by 4.86 per cent to nearly ₹ 5.45 lakh crore as of June 19, from ₹ 5.19 lakh crore reported during the same period the previous year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department. There was a marginal dip of 1.39 per cent in the net tax collections, which stood at ₹ 4.59 crore, due to a 58 per cent increase in refunds issued, PTI reported. As of June 19, advance tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 were ₹ 1.56 lakh crore, a 3.87 per cent growth. The surge in advance tax collections was primarily due to a 5.86 per cent increase in corporate advance tax payments, while collections from non-corporate taxpayers decreased by 2.68 per cent. Even though corporate tax collections rose, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) experienced a decrease, and the overall growth in collections was moderated by high refund outflows. The Income Tax Department recently launched the 'e-Pay Tax' feature, which is an online portal to make payments through the net banking facility of the authorised banks. The July 2024 Budget included a proposal for an extensive evaluation of the Income Tax Act of 1961. The aim was to streamline the Act for clarity, ultimately minimising disputes and litigation. On March 25, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that the new Income Tax Bill will be discussed during the Parliament's monsoon session. The Finance Minister has previously indicated in his budget speech that under the updated tax structure, individuals with earnings up to ₹ 12 lakhs will incur no tax liability thanks to the raised rebate of ₹ 60,000.

Siddaramaiah hits back at BJP, says housing quota in line with Centre's own norms
BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the Congress government is committed to inclusive development rejecting the politics of hatred and division being pushed by BJP. Hitting out at BJP that questioned his government's decision to increase quota for minorities in housing schemes, CM Siddaramaiah said that the Cabinet has approved a decision to enhance the earmarking for minority beneficiaries, including Christians, Jains, Muslims, etc, under state-run housing schemes in a calibrated manner, in line with the Union Government's own guidelines. The CM said that the government's decision does not grant blanket enhancement of quota across the state. 'It only addresses a specific implementation challenge. In many panchayats where the minority population is less than 10%, the mandated 10% earmarking could not be utilised. 'To ensure optimal use of the allocated targets and avoid lapses, we have allowed the gap from such panchayats to be reallocated to those with a higher minority population, subject to a cap of 15%,' he said, terming it as an administrative adjustment within the unreserved category and does not affect SC, ST, or OBC reservations in any manner. The decision is legally sound and has been cleared by the Law Department after thorough review, the CM said.
