SINGAPORE – Bak kut teh may be the signature dish at The Teochew Kitchenette @ Keong Saik, but the real crown jewel at the 60-seat zi char eatery – which opened in November 2024 – is the Crispy Spring Chicken ($42). Never mind that it is a Cantonese dish and must be ordered three days in advance – it is worth the wait.
No artificial colouring is used in the marinade. The chicken is seasoned with salt for a day, then carefully bathed in oil. The skin is thin, crisp and tinged red from maltose, while the meat is satisfyingly juicy. Dipped in a housemade mix of five spice powder, salt and pepper, each bite delivers.
The only letdown: The accompanying prawn crackers are soft and lack crunch.
A slurp-worthy staple is the Seafood White Bee Hoon ($9 for regular, $13.50 for large). A medley of prawns, clams, cai xin, egg and bee hoon arrives in a pool of flavourful gravy.

A bestseller is Granny's Tofu ($11 for regular, $16 for large). Deep-fried oblongs of tau kwa are blanketed in a minced pork sauce lifted with fermented black beans and dried sole.

For vegetables, try the Sambal Kang Kong ($11 for regular, $16 for large) . The greens are deftly stir-fried – crisp yet coated in spicy sambal with the briny punch of dried prawns.

A zi char standard, the Sweet & Sour Pork ($14 for regular, $20 for large) has a bright tang from a mix of black and white vinegar and tomato sauce.

The eatery offers two versions of steamed red grouper – Cantonese- and Teochew-style . Prices are $60 for a regular fish (550g to 600g) and $80 for a large (700g to 800g).
I opt for the Cantonese-style Steamed Red Grouper ($60). The garnish of deep-fried ginger strips is overbrowned and the housemade steam sauce – heavy on dang gui – overpowers the fish, which is also slightly overdone.

Italy judge gives Depardieu till October to settle Rome paparazzo case

Fabrizio Siggia, lawyer for Gerard Depardieu, arrives at court in Rome, Italy, on June 17, 2025, for the trial concerning charges related to the alleged assault of paparazzi photographer Rino Barillari. REUTERS/Guglielmo Mangiapane ROME - An Italian judge has given Gerard Depardieu until October to try to settle a case in which the French actor is accused of assaulting a veteran Italian photographer during an altercation in Rome last year. An initial hearing on Tuesday fixed a date of October 15 for the next session if Depardieu and Rino Barillari, a well-known paparazzo celebrity photographer, fail to settle out of court. Depardieu, 76, was not required to enter a plea at this stage, and was represented in court by lawyer Fabrizio Siggia. The case dates back to May 2024, when Barillari accused Depardieu of assaulting him in central Rome after he took photos of the actor and his partner at the Harry's Bar restaurant on Via Veneto. Barillari, who is 80, told Italian media at the time that he went to the restaurant when he heard that Depardieu was having lunch there with friends. Barillari took some photos before heading outside, after Depardieu's entourage repeatedly asked him to leave. The actor's partner, Magda Vavrusova, followed him to remonstrate, Barillari said, with Depardieu rushing out soon afterwards and punching him three times, leaving him with a cut to his head that needed medical attention. Barillari's account differed significantly from that of Depardieu and Vavrusova, who accused him of shoving them around. Separately, a Paris court last month found Depardieu guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set and handed him an 18-month suspended sentence. Depardieu repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in that case. His lawyer said he would appeal the court's decision. The actor has been a leading figure in French cinema, starring in more than 200 films over five decades, including Green Card, The Last Metro and Cyrano de Bergerac. K-pop star Daesung to hold first solo concert here on Aug 2

South Korean singer Daesung last performed here at the Yuewen Music Festival at Sentosa's Siloso Beach on Dec 29, 2024. PHOTO: ST FILE K-pop star Daesung to hold first solo concert here on Aug 2 South Korean singer Daesung, a member of K-pop boy band BigBang, will be holding his first solo concert in the Lion City on Aug 2 at the 6,700-seat Arena@Expo. The show is part of the 36-year-old's D's Wave 2025 Asia tour, which kicked off in Seoul on April 26, and has made stops in cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City. It will travel to Taipei, Hong Kong and Kobe in Japan before arriving in Singapore. The Singapore show was announced on Daesung's Instagram and Facebook on June 15 . Ticketing details have not been announced. Daesung last performed here at the Yuewen Music Festival at Sentosa's Siloso Beach in December 2024, just before another performance by fellow BigBang member Taeyang. Dressed in a cream cardigan, Daesung performed a 25-minute set with five songs. He opened with Wings (2012), from BigBang's EP Alive (2012), and followed up with Baby Don't Cry (2011) and Falling Slowly (2024). He then gave a preview of a then-unreleased number, Umbrella, which was released on April 8, 2025, before closing out with the crowd-pleaser Look At Me, Gwisun (2008). During that performance, he said: 'I know why the word 'sing' is part of Singapore. It is because you guys can sing so amazingly.'
