Storm Wipha kills 2 Chinese tourists, more rain forecast

Bangkok Post21-07-2025
PHUKET - Gusting winds and a storm-tossed sea claimed the lives of two Chinese tourists on Sunday, and weathermen on Monday warned of continued downpours as the after-effects of Typhoon Wipha continue to pound parts of Thailand.
Pol Lt Sirapat Chupong, of Chalong police station, said that on Sunday a Chinese woman, Wang Yang, 53, was killed by a falling tree at a beach on Koh He island in Phuket's Muang district.
Wang and her husband were lying on a beach bench under the tree when it was uprooted by the strong wind. It fell on top of them. Wang's husband escaped with minor injuries and he was given first aid by emergency responders.
Wang's body was taken to Chalong Hospital for preliminary post-mortem examination ahead of a full autopsy at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
In adjoining Krabi province, the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre Region 3 reported the death of Shin Yushi, 34, who drowned off Koh Lanta on Sunday.
Chaiyaphreuk Weerawong, chief of Mu Koh Lanta National Park, said the visitor was reportedly swimming with a friend. He was swept away by the rough sea.
He was found dead about one kilometre away and his body taken to Koh Lanta Hospital for autopsy. (continues below)
Phuket and Krabi were among the Andaman coast provinces pounded by heavy rain and stormy seas generated by Typhoon Wipha, which was downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting the China mainland.
Storm Wipha also sank a boat transporting goods from mainland Krabi to a resort on Phi Phi island. The boat's driver was rescued by a trawler after clinging desperately to a floating plastic container for at least four hours.
More rain to come
The Meteorological Department on Monday issued a fresh forecast, warning of more heavy rain and high seas through into Thursday.
The department said about half of Thailand would be pounded by more rain due to the impact of Wipha, which made landfall in China 's southern Guangdong province on Sunday.
The forecaster said five provinces in the northeastern, eastern and southern regions were at greatest risk from the storm. They are:
Chanthaburi
Mukdahan
Nakhon Phanom
Ranong
Trat

Galaxy Resorts calls for luxury strategy to maximise growth

As Thailand has already passed its tourism peak of 40 million tourists, the country requires luxury marketing and new public-private partnership investment in luxury tourism that targets the growing number of affluent travellers from Asia-Pacific in order to maximise growth, says Galaxy Resorts Thailand. It also said the delay of the entertainment complex bill would make Thailand lose competitiveness with other Asian and the Middle Eastern countries. "The battleground for Asia-Pacific now is the premium and luxury sector," said Kevin Clayton, chief brand officer of Galaxy Resorts Thailand. According to the Pacific Asia Travel Association, Asia-Pacific tourism generated over 648 million regional trips last year, and it is expected to reach nearly 700 million and 800 million trips, respectively, this year and in 2027. Mr Clayton said Thailand is at the centre of the major growth and could benefit from the growing middle class in the region, such as those of India and China. There were over 6.2 million affluent people and 168 million upper middle class people in China who are fuelling luxury consumption overseas and are opting for trips within the region. He said although Bangkok is competing at the forefront as one of the top most visited cities worldwide along with London and Istanbul, driven by increasing air capacity, overall Thailand is highly unlikely to gain 35 million foreign arrivals this year. It is hampered by sluggish Chinese arrivals, with the unsafe perception of Thailand due to the border scam and the latest Thailand-Cambodia border skirmishes, which many countries have warned their citizens about. Mr Clayton said in the short run, Thailand needs to solve these unsafe narratives, including scams against tourists in the city, through promotion with global celebrities, key opinion leaders and influencers along with cracking down on these illegal operators, since safety is the top priority for affluent tourists. It should also upgrade the major Thai tourism website to be easier and more attractive for foreigners to search for information, in the same way that the Japan National Tourism Organization website is able to do. He added that luxury tourism operators should use integration to promote their services as consolidated offerings. Beyond that, Thailand should enhance public-private partnerships to build new infrastructure and attractions that offer unique experiences, including through integrated resorts. He said an integrated resort developer like Galaxy Entertainment Group can complement Thailand's existing strengths in hospitality, wellness, food and culture, with new thrilling attractions such as concerts and festival halls, arts exhibitions, along with premium gaming services. Given Thailand's entertainment complex bill remains on hold, Mr Clayton said Galaxy Resort remains patient. The company respects the government's decision and public discussion around the process, and continues its presence in the nation. Meanwhile, in Asia-Pacific, the integrated resorts industry continues to evolve. Developments include the additional phases of Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, UAE's first casino resort by Wynn in 2027, as well as Japan's MGM Osaka in 2030. Even emerging destinations such as Vietnam now have three major integrated resorts. By delaying the entertainment complex bill, Thailand is not competing effectively with these destinations, said Mr Clayton. "There is a lost opportunity for the country more than obviously the company that is investing [in it]," he said. For Galaxy Entertainment Group, its Galaxy Macau is slated to open a fourth phase with five new luxury hotels, retail and family attractions in 2027. Given that Macau's government reduced its national gross gaming revenue forecast this year by 5%, Mr Clayton said Galaxy is still positive about its business outlook since the company is targeting the premium gaming sector, not the mass market like some other resorts in Macau. Its gross gaming revenue market share in the second quarter exceeded 20.3% in Macau, he said. Macau last year welcomed nearly 35 million tourists, with 46% staying an average of 2.3 days, generating over US$23 billion gross gaming revenue and $9 billion non-gaming revenue.

Chinese arrivals may hit 9m in 2026

Chinese tourist arrivals should rebound to 9 million in 2026, driven by large groups, positive momentum from chartered flights and global business events that reinforce Thailand's image as a safe destination, according to the Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta). Atta president Thanapol Cheewarattanaporn said Chinese arrivals could climb to 9 million next year, approaching the 2019 peak of 10.9 million, mainly driven by three factors. He said chartered flights should start to increase this year thanks to the subsidy programme offering 350,000 baht per flight, as Atta already secured deals with travel agents in Chongqing, Lanzhou and Hangzhou during its roadshow this week. This programme alone should attract 150,000 Chinese tourists, said Mr Thanapol, along with 75,000 travellers from subsidies for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions segment, which are typically high spenders. Large incentive groups choosing Bangkok as their destination should also help revive confidence, notably the Amway 2026 incentive meeting in March and April 2026, with 13,000 delegates joining, he said. "These large-scale groups from China will play a key role in restoring travel confidence among Chinese tourists and will help attract more independent travellers back to Thailand," said Mr Thanapol, adding this estimate assumes no further negative incidents. On Oct 12-18, 2026, Thailand is scheduled to host the World Bank Governors' Meeting, an international event that could help elevate confidence in Thailand's safety, infrastructure and capacity as a leading tourism and business destination, he said. Adith Chairattananon, honorary secretary-general of Atta, said the momentum from the chartered flights subsidy should continue, increasing traffic to Thailand by five times and generating a total of 1 million tourists of the 9-million goal next year. Zheng Wei, owner of Gansu Junhe Cultural Tourism, a major tour operator in Lanzhou, said there's strong interest in the chartered and incentive subsidies. "We expect the real impact of these measures to show starting from November and December. If no major negative incidents occur, Chinese tourism to Thailand could recover to 70-80% of pre-pandemic levels by late next year," he said. Mr Zheng said the emergence of Vietnam serves as a temporary substitute based on lower costs, but it still lacks the quality and appeal of Thailand. "Safety concerns are easing. If Thailand handles this well, Chinese tourists will definitely return. Vietnam is not a true competitor due to its substandard services. Most Chinese tourists don't repeat their visits," he said. The TAT & Atta Roadshow to China this week is aimed at blunting the sharp plunge of the Chinese market by 34.1% in the first half. However, the TAT has yet to set 9 million as a target and remains cautious in assessing the situation.

The best of land and sea at Espresso

Espress at InterContinental Bangkok becomes a playground for beef buffs and seafood connoisseurs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, during which the Premium Seafood Dinner Buffet with a special addition of Australian wagyu beef are served. The latter is a time-limited add-on, available until the end of August, to the already sumptuous and expansive dinner buffet that Espresso is known for. Located on the mezzanine level of InterContinental Bangkok, the weekend dinner buffet at Espresso is an indulgent one indeed, as you'll be spoilt for choice with many delicacies from various cuisines to savour. With the two highlights being seafood and Australian beef, you can technically enjoy all the surf and turf you want. There's a corner behind a stylish partition, perfect for those who want semi-privacy. Alternatively, you can find a table near the glass railing to overlook the beautiful lobby below, while being serenaded by a live jazz band from 6.30-9.30 pm on Friday and Saturday. Various counters and stations can easily increase your appetite, but none may be more so than the seafood on ice display, which showcases fresh fruits of the sea and DIY caviar sets. The catches come from far and wide, from Irish and Fine de Claire oysters, Chilean king crab legs, New Zealand green mussels, Canadian lobsters, Swimmer blue crab claws and more. Dig around and you may find a lobster claw that's bigger than your phone. Assemble a caviar tasting set by yourself with a selection of salty and savoury pearls, including Avruga, ikura and lumpfish roes. Of course, the Thai-style seafood dipping sauce is on standby to add zest to any seafood. More savoury seafood awaits at the BBQ station, which serves Marinated tuna steak, perfectly grilled Grouper with dill crème sauce and succulent Rock lobster with seafood sauce. On the freshwater front, don't miss out on Goong Ta khrai. The aromatic Thai-style roasted river prawn is enhanced with garlic, lemongrass and turmeric. From the Chinese BBQ station, Chinese favourites like Peking duck, Crispy pork belly and BBQ pork are available next to delicious dim sum. The good news is that Peking duck comes neatly wrapped for you. More Asian delights await at the Indian corner, where pre-cooked dishes can be enjoyed with naan bread or jeera bhaat. Of course, Japanophiles should check out the tempura, sushi and sashimi selection, which includes Aussie beef nigiri topped with tobiko, at the Japanese food station. More importantly, pair your seafood with time-limited premium Australian beef for a truly indulgent dinner, and you have many choices to choose from. Combine the best of land and sea, if you will. Espresso's grill station serves a rotation of MBS (Marble Beef Score) 8-9 wagyu topside beef from Margaret River and the famed Sir Harry's MBS 6-7 citrus-fed rump cut. The latter deserves a special mention for its combo of succulence and mouth-watering aroma. Meanwhile the carvery features a rotation of the 200-day dry-aged MBS 4-5 Ebony Prime Grain Fed Ribeye and tomahawk steaks. The Aussie beef is also presented in the form of pre-cooked dishes — red wine-braised brisket, beef massaman curry, crying tiger grilled beef, to name but a few — that you can help yourself to while waiting for your cook-to-order succulent beef steaks or lamb chops to be served at your table. Save some room for desserts for a sweet (and decadent) end to your meal. The selection of Thai desserts alone is quite expansive. You can go for crowd-pleaser Thai mango with sticky rice or something less known like Pumpkin custard or Thai gocchi in coconut milk. Or enjoy made-to-order Crepe suzette or bathe fresh seasonal fruits with a chocolate fountain. The Premium Seafood Dinner Buffet at Espresso is available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm-10.30pm with the addition of Australian wagyu beef available until the end of August. It's priced at B2,250++ per person and B1,200++ per child. Email InterContinental Bangkok at call 02-656-0444 or visit to book a table. Don't forget to bring a big appetite.
