‘Survekshan 2025' inaugurated at NMIT
The Department of Civil Engineering at the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) hosted its annual national-level technical fest, Survekshan 2025, with a focus on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in civil engineering on Monday.
Lt. Col. P.J. Anand Kumar (Retd.), Founder and CEO of Critical AI Pvt. Ltd., the chief guest for the event, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the transformative role. 'Civil engineering, the foundation of civilization for millennia, is undergoing a major shift with the advent of AI,' he said. He highlighted how AI is optimizing project processes, enhancing safety, and promoting sustainability from design to demolition.
Underscoring the often-overlooked aspect of demolition, he emphasised, 'Demolition is as crucial as construction. Sustainable practices, now supported by AI, can reduce environmental impact and help engineers make informed decisions.'
Chandrashekhar M.S., Vice-President, Epcogen Pvt. Ltd., the Guest of Honor, described Survekshan as a key platform enabling students to assess and enhance their knowledge and skills. H.C. Nagarj, Principal, NMIT, presided over the event.

E-khata chaos: Helplines of no help, property owners in Bengaluru at their wits' end
Bengaluru: Flat owners, already caught in BBMP's e-khata chaos, have a new headache: Navigating the civic body's own helplines. Instead of offering solutions, the helplines and officials are trapping e-khata holders in a maddening loop that ends with nothing. Take the case of its much-publicised helpline number 1533 or WhatsApp number 9480683695. For citizens struggling with discrepancies in parking lot dimensions, these helplines are supposed to provide relief. But, not so in reality. Anand Kumar, a senior citizen from Kanakapura Road, said: "I wanted to file objections and contacted the local BBMP revenue official, but he told me to approach special commissioner Munish Moudgil in the BBMP head office. When I went to the central office at Hudson Circle, I was told to call the BBMP helpline. Initially, the helplines did not work. When someone finally answered, I was again redirected to the local revenue official. I am only going around in circles with no solution at sight." At 1.25pm, the reporter dialled 1533. In the second attempt, the reporter pressed 1, but the loop continued until the call was dropped again. The entire sequence was recorded on video. Later, at 4:57pm, the e-khata helpline (9480683695) was tried. A recorded message asked the caller to "hold the line" as the line was busy. After waiting nearly seven minutes, the call disconnected automatically. A second attempt at 5:21pm met with the same fate. Residents say this is not an isolated glitch but a persistent failure. "It's impossible to get through. I've tried more than 20 times in the last week," said Shalini Rao, a resident of JP Nagar. She added, "Even if you're lucky enough to connect, you either get disconnected midway or are stuck in endless loops." Ramesh Gowda from Yelahanka, a sports teacher at a private school, recounted a similar experience: "I needed to clarify a mismatch in my property details. The helpline was my first option, but after repeated failures, I had to take half-a-day's leave to go to the revenue office, where I was told to come back another day because the official concerned was busy." With citizens' frustration mounting, civic activists said BBMP must urgently overhaul its grievance-redress system. "A helpline that doesn't connect is worse than no helpline at all — it erodes public trust," said Vinod Kumar, member of a residents' welfare association. A senior revenue official said, "We are a team of 12 and each of us gets almost 100 calls daily, how can we answer all? We are trying our best to help, but if citizens are at fault and they keep pressing the panic button, we cannot do anything." IIT-I's AI system to forecast air quality in Indian cities
Indore: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has developed AeroVision , a weather forecast system designed to predict air quality for the next six days in Indian cities and towns. By analysing 12 years of hourly air quality data alongside weather and atmospheric information, the system forecasts levels of six key pollutants-PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO₂, NO₂, and O₃-with accuracy consistently above 95%. Developed by Prof. Manish Kumar Goyal and his research team, including Kuldeep Singh Rautela from the Department of Civil Engineering, AeroVision utilises advanced artificial intelligence technologies such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU). The system also collects weather data including temperature, rainfall, wind speed, air pressure, and humidity, as well as atmospheric conditions like the vertical dispersion of pollution and hours of sunshine. Professor Suhas Joshi, director of IIT Indore said, "AeroVision is a step towards empowering citizens with the ability to foresee and mitigate the health impacts of air pollution. By providing reliable, location-specific forecasts, it aligns with our vision of using science and technology for societal well-being and sustainable living." The data is gathered hourly from a 25-kilometre grid across various regions. Professor Goyal added, "This system converts complex pollution data into a simple, colour-coded Air Quality Index (AQI) following Indian standards, along with health warnings and activity recommendations. It enables individuals, communities, and policymakers to plan outdoor activities, take preventive health measures, and respond to pollution events in advance." The AQI operates similarly to a traffic light system: Green (0-50) indicates good air quality, Yellow (51-100) is moderate but requires caution for sensitive individuals, Orange (101-200) is unhealthy for sensitive groups, Red (201-300) is unhealthy for everyone, and Purple (301+) is very unhealthy, advising avoidance of outdoor activities.

Uno Minda launches LED Blinkers for Royal Enfield motorcycles, priced at ₹1,137
Uno Minda, a well-known name in the automotive compo ne nts space, has introduced a new set of LED blinkers tailored specifically for Royal Enfield motorcycles. These new indicators are now available in the Indian aftermarket and have been designed to appeal to ride rs who value both function and form. At first glance, these LED blinkers stand out with a contemporary design that blends well with the classic styling of Royal Enfield motorcycles. But they're more than just a cosmetic enhancement. The key upgrade here is improved visibility. With high-brightness lighting, these indicators are meant to offer better safety, especially in low-light and high-traffic conditions—areas where traditional blinkers often fall short. One of the practical highlights of the new LED units is their IP67 rating, meaning they are both waterproof and dustproof. For motorcyclists, especially those who ride in varied weather or rough terrains, this durability offers peace of mind. Whether it's heavy monsoon rains or dusty roads, the blinkers are built to function reliably. The brand says that these blinkers are designed for simple, hassle-free installation. However, it is important to note that the LED blinkers could potentially void the electrical warranty of the motorcycles, especially if the installation is not done properly or damages the original wiring. The warranty will only be affected if the blinkers are proven to be the direct cause of any issues or due to some other genuine reason. So, the customer should make sure that they do their research thoroughly before deciding whether they want to install them Speaking on the launch, Anand Kumar, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Aftermarket Domain at Uno Minda, shared that the product is part of the company's wider push toward introducing modern, performance-focused solutions for Indian riders. He emphasised that these blinkers reflect a combination of durability, style, and improved rider safety. Priced at ₹1,137 and backed by a one-year warranty, the Uno Minda Advanced LED Blinkers are now available both online and at major offline retailers across the country. For Royal Enfield motorcycle owners looking to update their ride with something both functional and visually striking, these blinkers could be a thoughtful addition.
