‘Karla Sofía I kiss you': Emilia Pérez director extends olive branch to disgraced and absent star
Emilia Pérez beat out four other films in the best film not in the English language category: Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light, Walter Salles's I'm Still Here, Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap, and Mohammad Rasoulof's The Seed of the Sacred Fig.
Thanking his cast, Audiard added at the end of his speech: 'I also thank you Karla Sofía, who I kiss.'
It was a significant tribute from the French film-maker, who had previously responded to the comments of his Oscar-nominated star by branding them 'hateful'.
The social media behaviour of Gascón, who had shown bigoted views towards people of colour, Muslims and increased diversity at the Oscars, plummeted Emilia Pérez into controversy in the last few weeks – and led to Netflix removing her image from their film posters.
Gascón, who is the first out transgender actress to be Bafta- and Oscar-nominated for leading actress, was absent from the awards. This followed an apology that she hoped her 'silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference.'
'It's very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía,' Audiard said in an interview with Deadline earlier this month. 'The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust.
'And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It's as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.'
When asked if he has spoken to her since, he responded at the time: 'I haven't spoken to her, and I don't want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in, and I really don't understand why she's continuing.'
After the tweets were discovered, Gascón initially went on the attack with multiple statements and an hour-long interview. While she has admitted to being 'deeply sorry' she also called out a 'campaign of hate and misinformation' that led to her being 'harassed'.
'She's really playing the victim,' Audiard said in response. 'She's talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It's as if she thought that words don't hurt.'
Emilia Pérez was nominated for 11 Baftas, including best director, best film, and film not in the English language. The film was also criticised heavily in Mexico over issues of authenticity and taste, for which Audiard later apologised.
In his speech on Sunday, Audiard also paid tribute to his fellow shortlisted directors. 'From Ireland, India, Iran, or Brazil, we all try to talk about the world in our own way, with our own tools and sensibilities,' he said. 'Through cinema, we weave narratives that try to push back the boundaries, to question a few conventions, even if that sometimes means breaking a few rules along the way.'

Love Is Blind UK fans slam furious rant by star in very public display
The next batch of episodes have been released on Netflix A Love Is Blind UK star released a furious rant towards an ex in an explosive row during a reunion party. Today (August 20) saw the next four episodes of the brand new Love Is Blind UK released on Netflix where the newly engaged couples began to navigate their new lives together. But with that, comes more hurdles and obstacles as they live with one another and meet each other's loved ones. As well as tensions rising between the couples, this week also saw a reunion party with the fellow Love Is Blind cast, but it ended in an explosive row. Last week saw human design coach Patrick being guided by his 'spleen' as he decided against proposing to professional singer Aanu. But when the pair came face to face in this week's episodes, Aanu was far from impressed. She said: " I'm quite, what you see is what you get, which I feel like I've not had the same gratitude from you." Apologising for "ruining her experience", Aanu interrupted Patrick as she continued: "You took the experience away from me Patrick. You reassured me so much with your words." She went on to say: "It's let me know then and there. You didn't let me know then and there... You're a liar, you're a liar, you're a liar." Things soon turned sour as Patrick said: "There is no way that me and you were meant to be together..... At the end I basically had to make a decision." But Aanu interrupted, saying: "Your head scarf looks silly as well, it doesn't match your outfit... Why have you got a head scarf on anyway?" Branding the comment as "crazy", Patrick replied: "I thought it would be a good look for me." Aanu eventually stormed away from the conversation, as she stated: "Good luck with your splenic rectum." And fans have been unimpressed with the altercation. Over on Reddit, one user said "Aanu did not Carry herself Well.. that was embarrassing. For her. So uncontrolled." Another said they were "embarrassed", adding: "Yeah she was messy both in the Javen interactions and how hard she went in on Patrick. Embarrassed for her." A third commented: "I'm not done with the episode yet but 'my spinal rectum' made me spit out my water." One fan was left "crying" as they said: "I think his spleen is being burst a bit here crying." On X, one fan said: "'Good luck with your splenic rectum' IM F***** SCREAMING." As another replied: "Aanu", coupled with a line of laughing emojis. A third penned: "I get Aanu was feeling annoyed about how her situation with Patrick ended but she just started acting immature and not letting him talk + making silly jabs .. it was a bit weird."

American moves to the UK and learns new meaning of words 'quite good'
A woman from California who moved to London has shared some of the biggest culture shocks she experienced about life in the UK, including what people actually mean when they say certain phrases The UK is home to people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and it also attracts expats. Moving to a new country is likely to bring some culture shocks that might take time to get used to, from the food to the social norms to the customs. Andrea Celeste is an American woman who now lives in London and uses her TikTok page to share differences she has noticed and personally experienced herself between the US and the UK. Although the US and UK are known to have a 'special relationship', there are some major ways that the two countries differ. In a recent TikTok video, Andrea shared her biggest culture shocks as someone from California living in England – including what people really mean when they say 'quite good'. So here's what she had to say... 1. 'British understatement' Andrea said one adjustment when she moved to the UK was learning to interpret what she calls 'British understatement.' She explained: 'If something is described as 'quite good' it usually means it's amazing. If someone says they're 'a bit concerned', they may actually be panicking.' In contrast, the Californian thinks people in the US are more direct and will simply just say what they mean unless they're being sarcastic. 2. Friendships are formed in different ways Andrea stated: 'One of the biggest culture shocks I experienced as a Californian living in England was the difference in how friendships are built. 'In California people are incredibly kind and open-hearted so friendships often form quickly and feel instantly warm but sometimes they end up staying a bit surface level.' However, she has noticed that people in England can keep to themselves a bit more at first so it ends up being 'a bit more of a slow burn to a deep and meaningful friendship". 3. Differences in talking about your achievements The expat shared that it isn't uncommon for Americans to be openly proud about their achievements, which is shown by the 'American dream mindset' or celebrating graduations with graduation photos and having your degree framed. On the flip side, Andrea has observed that people in England 'can be very talented but don't really promote it". What's more, being open about your accomplishments isn't as common in the UK as in the US. She remarked: 'I sometimes find it refreshing but I think there is probably a happy medium.' In the caption of her TikTok video, Andrea joked she was "learning to decode the British language (even though it's also English).' The post has amassed dozens of comments and several viewers agreed with Andrea's points. One said: 'I really appreciate how great your insight is!' Another added: 'Agree 10000% with all of this!!! As a kiwi living in the US! Exactly how I felt.' A third user simply commented: 'You nailed this.' However, there was also a bit of disagreement as a British viewer chimed in: 'I'm not sure that it's understatement, I think we're just a lot less dramatic than the average American.'

Love Is Blind UK: Where Are Katisha And Javen Now?
Viewers have been hooked to the drama on the new series of Love Is Blind UK. Season two of Netflix's dating show, hosted by Emma and Matt Willis, has seen five couples getting engaged within the first four episodes, but how many of them will last to make it up the altar? Katisha on Love Is Blind ©Netflix The dating experiment sees the contestants getting to know each other in the famous Pods without seeing one another, before their real-life meeting once they commit and get engaged. They then spend a week together in Cyprus for a post-pod retreat before returning to the UK to live together and plan their wedding. Katisha, 31, and Javen, 28, were the last couple to get engaged after getting involved in a love triangle with Demola Ayilara, following her shock last-minute turn-around. At the end of the first four episodes, Katisha and Javen are still together, after the nanny and make-up artist did a 180 and chose to pursue her connection with the health coach over Demola. But is their relationship strong enough to last, despite the shaky start and other members of the pod squad questioning their relationship? Demola's upcoming return could also throw a spanner in their blissful union. Javen and Katisha on Love Is Blind ©Netflix From the start, Katisha and Javen connected on more than a superficial level. Drawn to her 'kind spirit', he persuaded her to open up on their first pod date, where she confided her fears of being vulnerable in her search for love because of a traumatic past break-up. Katisha told him that her last boyfriend was unfaithful many times but she always took him back. They also spoke of their united desire to have two to three children in the future. On their second meet, they discussed the importance of having both physical and emotional intimacy in a romantic partnership, and Katisha is taken with Javen's honesty. At the same time, Katisha was getting to know financial analyst Demola, who was more open about wanting to be with her unlike Javen, who held back and played it cool. When Demola told Katisha that she is deserving of the affection he had been bestowing on her, she decided he was the one. As she went to her next date with Javen with the intention to cool things between them, she reassured Demola, 'Don't worry, nothing's going to change. I feel confident in my decision.' Katisha on Love Is Blind ©Netflix But when she tried to call it quits with Javen, the former professional footballer made a romantic gesture with flowers and declared his feelings. 'I feel like you're the one,' he told her, leading her to second-guess her decision. She then went back on her promise to a shocked Demola, breaking off their relationship, and Javen and Katisha got engaged. However, when they met the other couples in Cyprus, the pair's relationship came under fire. Kal called Katisha out for the way she treated Demola and also brought up the issue with Javen about his fiancee's sudden and unexpected change of mind. We'll have to wait and see how that all affects Katisha and Javen's relationship.
