Egypt Expands Universal Health Insurance With 2 South Sinai Hospitals
Egypt opens two advanced hospitals in South Sinai as part of its Universal Health Insurance plan, enhancing care access ahead of the 2030 goal for nationwide healthcare coverage.

Egypt has opened two new hospitals in South Sinai under the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).
The EGP 1.3 billion project includes Nuweiba Central Hospital, a 5,000-square-metre facility featuring 42 dialysis machines, intensive and inpatient care units, operating theatres, radiology and endoscopy services, laboratories, a blood bank, and 10 outpatient clinics. Meanwhile, Dahab New Hospital, which cost EGP 728 million, is equipped with 58 beds, six outpatient clinics, and specialised units for dialysis, neonatal care, emergency surgery, and radiology.
Both hospitals are designed to expand access to medical care in remote parts of the peninsula while easing the load on other regional health centres. They join five existing UHIS-affiliated facilities in the governorate—Sharm El-Sheikh International, Ras Sedr Specialised, Taba Central, Saint Catherine, and Al-Fayrouz Medical Complex—which together have provided over 1.5 million services since 2018.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority, confirmed that more than EGP 4 billion has so far been invested in South Sinai's UHIS operations. This includes infrastructure development, medical equipment, and ongoing service provision.
As the UHIS expands, medical staff at existing hospitals will undergo training to meet the system's standards. The first phase of the national rollout is set to conclude in July 2025 with the inclusion of Aswan, positioning South Sinai among the six governorates at the forefront of Egypt's healthcare transformation.

Arab League Convenes Workshop on Internal Displacement, Impact on Children
Mohamed Mandour The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department), in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is convening a regional workshop on internal displacement and its impact on children in the Arab region via an online platform. The workshop is held within the framework of the Joint Action Plan between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department) and UNHCR for the period 2024–2025, which seeks to strengthen collaborative efforts to address internal displacement and its multifaceted consequences. The workshop is bringing together representatives from relevant national mechanisms in member states responsible for issues of asylum and displacement, along with experts and specialists in the field of childhood in the Arab region. The agenda includes a range of thematic discussions aimed at deepening understanding of international and regional legal frameworks governing the protection of internally displaced persons, with particular attention to the specific vulnerabilities and needs of displaced children. The programme also explores proposed interventions to improve their humanitarian and legal conditions. Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits EGP 309bn in 2024, marking 43% growth
Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials. The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment. A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs. The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa. The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria. Additionally, the meeting showcased progress in EDA's internship programs, including the pilot launch of a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform aimed at enhancing professional training and knowledge transfer.
