
Man arrested for discharging a firearm in a municipal area
This after a police constable heading to work on Saturday (August 9), at about 06:45, heard several gunshots and saw an unknown African man running towards a silver BMW with a Gauteng Province registration, firing several shots.
The member called for backup, and the suspect was found to be intoxicated and in possession of a firearm.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani said that although the suspect's firearm license was valid, he was arrested and detained for discharging a firearm in a municipal area.
The firearm was seized, and nobody was injured. The suspect is expected to appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate's Court on a charge of discharging a firearm in a municipal area.

Suspected robbers caught
Six suspects allegedly involved in a series of robberies in Ntoane and Moteti villages under the Dennilton policing area were nabbed last Thursday, and an unlicensed firearm as well as stolen properties were seized. According to the Limpopo Provincial Police, the recent robberies were committed on August 14. Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, said suspects driving in a Toyota GD6 Club Cab allegedly robbed a shop of cash and cellphones in Ntoane Village. The crime prevention members, detectives and Sekhukhune District Tracking and Investigations Team netted the suspects. 'The described vehicle was spotted in Dennilton, and a chase ensued. Police intercepted the vehicle, and three male suspects were arrested. They were found in possession of a pellet gun. Police received another report of a robbery in Moteti Village. They spotted a suspicious white BMW driving at high speed, managed to stop and search it, and three other suspects were arrested. They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm,' explained Ledwaba. Ledwaba stated that the six suspects were linked to three business robberies that occurred in June and July. He further indicated that they were also linked to a recent business robbery and house robbery that took place on August 14. 'One suspect was charged with contravention of the Immigration Act,' added Ledwaba. The suspects are expected to appear before the Dennilton Magistrate's Court today (Monday).

The vehicles were spotted along the R42 between Bronkhorstspruit and Delmas, sparking a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned the BMW, while a Mazda Etude attempted to block officers but later crashed. The chase continued into eTwatwa, Daveyton, where the suspects eventually abandoned the Ford Ranger and fled on foot. The suspect has been charged with house robbery and contravention of the Immigration Act. He is expected to appear before the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Monday, with police indicating that more charges may follow as investigations continue. Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the coordinated efforts of all police units involved, as well as the support of the tracking company. Rhodes University honours Justice Lex Mpati with law building naming
The law faculty of Rhodes University will be named after Justice Lex Mpati. This forms part of its 120th anniversary, marking more than a century of academic excellence and profound contributions to the South African legal landscape. As a testament to this enduring legacy and its pivotal role in shaping the nation's jurisprudence, it will honour Justice Lex Mpati by naming the faculty after him. 'This occasion signifies a commitment to recognising visionary leaders and inspiring future generations who will uphold the rule of law across South Africa,' Judge Gerald Bloem, Council Chairperson of Rhodes University said. He added that Justice Mpati's life and career embody the core values our institution promotes, which includes integrity, excellence, and social justice. 'His jurisprudence consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to constitutional values, like equality and human dignity,' said Judge Bloem. He was a former Judge of the Eastern Cape Division and later President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. He was also an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2007. Beyond his judicial work, Justice Mpati chaired the Commission of Inquiry into allegations of impropriety at the Public Investment Corporation (PIC). He served as Chancellor of Rhodes University for 13 years, bridging the world of academic legal education and judicial practice. His lectures, mentorship, and guidance have inspired generations of law students, many of whom have served in various capacities in our legal system. He has consistently advocated for access to justice and legal education for all South Africans.
