Dharwad: The
horticulture department
, which was struggling to augment funds to conduct
Mango Mela
, has finally managed to mobilise resources and decided to hold the five-day mela from May 13 to 17 at its office premises on Railway Station road in Dharwad.District minister Santosh Lad will inaugurate the mango fest on May 13 at 11am.
This is the 16th edition of the mango festival and over the years, the mela has been attracting people from neighbouring districts too.Dharwad, known for growing rich-quality Alphonso mangoes popularly called 'Dharwad aapus', has found a distinct place and is rated as one of the best table-top fruit.Horticulture deputy director KC Bhadrananvar said that after Ratnagiri, Dharwad is the only place wherein the rich variety Alphonso quality mangoes are grown. In Dharwad, Alphonso is grown in more than 25,000 hectares.Jogyellapur, Kelgeri, Tegur, Amblikopp, Halligeri, Mansur, Mugad, Mandihal, Devagiri, Navalur, Itagatti, Yerikopp, Kalkeri, Kyarkopp and other regions are known as Alphonso mango growing belt. The annual yield is expected is 1.50 lakh quintal. However, due to natural vagaries, there is a deficit of 50%.This has led to price rise. The 'King of the fruit' is being sold as high as Rs 700 per dozen in retail shops.Even though, people are paying such a princely price to the fruit, many are disappointed as chemically-ripened fruits are entering the market. However, the mango mela here has been facilitating people find the unique taste of the fruit. Over 40 mango growers who have grown the fruit organically and ripened them naturally have set up stalls at the mela.It may be stated here that the leaseholders from other states are visiting the mango groves soon after they start flowering and quote very less price. Unable to understand the market analysis, poor farmers are giving their groves on lease and end up getting less price.Hence, to help the growers get good price and help the consumers find naturally-ripened fruit, the Mango Mela has been started. At the mela, Alphonso, Kalmi, Badami, Kesari, Mallika, Neelam and other varieties of fruits will be on sale.Mango marketHorticulture deputy director Bhadrannavar further stated that mango has been selected under Union govt's One District, One Product scheme. Accordingly, the department has submitted a proposal seeking funds to set up an exclusive market and processing units in the district. Land has been identified at Itigatti on Hubballi-Dharwad bypass. Funds are awaited to start the market, he added.

Piyush Goyal begins Sweden visit to identify new opportunities for trade growth

New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday began his official visit to Sweden, aimed at reinforcing the existing robust economic relationship and identifying new opportunities for growth which are aligned with India's long-term economic objectives and global partnerships. The Union Minister's Sweden visit comes after a successful two-day official visit to Switzerland, which focused on advancing India–Switzerland economic cooperation and operationalising the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) signed earlier this year between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). In the second leg of the official tour, the minister will co-chair the 21st Session of the Indo-Swedish Joint Commission for Economic, Industrial, and Scientific Cooperation (JCEISC) with Benjamin Dousa, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. Goyal is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Dousa and Hakan Jevrell, State Secretary to the Minister of Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. These deliberations are aimed at reinforcing the existing robust economic relationship and identifying new opportunities for growth, aligning with India's long-term economic objectives and global partnerships, according to a statement from the Commerce Ministry. During the visit, key engagements will involve an India-Sweden Business Leaders' roundtable and one-on-one meetings with leading Swedish companies. These discussions will cover a wide range of industries where Sweden excels, including advanced manufacturing, innovation, green technologies, and sustainable solutions. Companies like Ericsson, Volvo Group, IKEA, Sandvik, Alfa Laval, and SAAB are among those with a significant presence or interest in enhancing ties with India. Minister Goyal will also engage with the Indian diaspora and address media interactions, further strengthening the people-to-people connections and communicating the vision for the India-Sweden partnership. According to the official statement, the visit reflects the deepening alignment of strategic priorities between India and its European partners, aiming to translate high-level commitments into sustainable economic partnerships that foster innovation, resilience, and shared growth. Earlier, the Minister engaged extensively with Swiss industry leaders across sectors, including biotech and pharma, healthcare, precision engineering, defence, and emerging technologies. As India charts its journey toward becoming a $5 trillion economy, this visit has set the tone for accelerated collaboration with innovation-driven, trusted partners like Switzerland, said the ministry.

The first project involves doubling the Koderma-Barkakana track (133 kms), which runs through Jharkhand's primary coal-producing region. This route also provides the most direct and efficient railway connection between Patna and Ranchi. The second project is the doubling of the Ballari-Chikjajur line (185 kms), extending across Karnataka's Ballari and Chitradurga districts, and Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district. The railway expansion projects span across seven districts in Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, adding approximately 318 kilometres to the existing Indian Railways network. The multi-tracking initiatives will benefit roughly 1,408 villages, serving a population of about 28.19 lakh residents. These infrastructure enhancements will boost the Indian Railways' operational capacity, leading to better efficiency and reliability in service delivery, according to CCEA press release.
