The New York Mets and their fans will certainly appreciate this update after what has been a brutal start to the summer. Mets' ace Kodai Senga is slated to begin a rehab start this weekend, either Saturday or Sunday.

Senga injured his hamstring when he attempted to cover first base a few weeks back. Since then, the rotation has been in shambles. The Mets recently added two more pitchers to the IL, joining Senga, Tylor Megill, and Sean Manaea.
The team needs Senga to return as soon as possible, and it is not yet known if he needs more than one rehab start. The current pitchers in the rotation for the Mets are David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning, and Frankie Montas. As of now, they just have the four after Paul Blackburn was added to the IL ahead of the game tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Montas had an impressive season debut against the Atlanta Braves in his first start as a Met. He allowed zero runs on just three hits in five innings. However, his second outing was the opposite. In only 4.0 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he allowed seven hits, six earned runs, including two home runs. Montas has struck out five hitters in both games. The Mets will need Montas to bounce back this weekend against the New York Yankees in the Subway Series.
As of now, New York does not have a starter lined up for Friday's 4th of July game against the Yankees. Peterson goes tonight against the Brewers, and then Montas is slated for Saturday, followed by another undecided for the series finale on Sunday. The rotation is not looking bright, but when Senga returns, it has a chance to skyrocket. Both Peterson and Holmes have had very good seasons with ERAs of 3.30 and below.

Senga had a 1.47 ERA, which would be the lowest in the league if eligible.

Cubs might need trade deadline reinforcements to overtake Brewers

Yahoo Sports national MLB insider Russell Dorsey discusses what the Chicago Cubs could be in the market for ahead of next week's MLB trade deadline with a potentially pivotal matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers looming. View more Video Transcript The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball. And with the help of their juggernaut offense, they're one of about seven teams that have a legitimate chance to win the World Series. The only problem for the Cubs is the Milwaukee Brewers are also one of those teams and sit right next to them at the top of the NL Central. Now, a week away from the deadline, the Cubs have a need for starting pitching, a high-leverage arm in their bullpen, and possibly a third baseman. But the real test will come next week. In a major head-to-head matchup against the Brewers in Milwaukee just days before the deadline. Close

File Photo by Laurence Kesterson/UPI | License Photo July 25 (UPI) -- The New York Mets traded two minor league players to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for left-handed relief pitcher Gregory Soto, the teams announced Friday. The Orioles will receive right-handed pitchers Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster in the swap. Soto, 30, posted a 3.96 ERA and 0-2 record over 45 appearances this season. The two-time All-Star owns a 4.24 ERA and 13-31 record over 366 career appearances. He also totaled 56 saves over his first seven seasons. He will join a Mets bullpen that ranks fifth in the National League with a 3.84 ERA. Mets starters own the second-best ERA (3.40) in the National League. The Mets (59-44) are on a four-game winning streak and sit in first place in the National League East, a half-game ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies (58-44). Soto is set to hit free agency in 2026. Aracena, 20, went 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA over 17 appearances this season for the St. Lucie Mets, the Mets' Single-A affiliate. He went 7-14 with a 4.53 ERA over the first 57 minor league appearances of his career. Foster, 26, went 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA over 21 minor league appearances this season, including time in Triple-A and Double-A. He went 13-10 with a 3.78 ERA in 66 total minor league appearances since 2023. Orioles starters own the worst ERA (5.15) in the American League. Their bullpen owns the third-worst ERA (4.77) in the American League. The Orioles (45-57) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday in Cleveland. They sit in last place in the American League East, 15.5 games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles will host the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies (26-76) at 7:05 p.m. EDT Friday in Baltimore. The Mets will take on the San Francisco Giants (54-49) at 10:15 p.m. Friday in San Francisco.

Gregory Soto trade grades: Mets bolster bullpen with two-time All-Star

In a move that signifies a deeper teardown in Baltimore and a desire in Queens to backfill a roster still fighting for the National League East title, the New York Mets acquired left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Orioles on Friday, July 25 in exchange for two minor league relief pitchers, according to multiple reports. Soto, 30, moves back to the NL East almost exactly a year after the Philadelphia Phillies traded him to Baltimore in a swap among contenders. He's been largely effective and occasionally dominant, striking out 44 in 36 innings and holding left-handed batters to a .138/.271/.276 line. Soto backfills a role in the Mets bullpen missing since top lefty A.J. Minter suffered a season-ending lat injury in May. In exchange, the Orioles receive Class AAA right-hander Cameron Foster and Class A righty Wellington Aracena. A breakdown of the deal: Gregory Soto trade grades Not a bad pickup given the Mets' relatively urgent need for a lefty amid a market that will only tighten leading up to the July 31 trade deadline. Soto is a veteran situational guy who was recently tabbed to fill in closer duties after Orioles fireballer Felix Bautista went on the injured list; Soto saved Thursday's game at Cleveland in his last appearance for Baltimore. Yet in this three-batter minimum era, Soto may be exposed against the deep lineups among NL contenders. Opposing right-handers are getting on base at a .371 clip against him, with a .726 OPS, although he's yet to yield a homer to a right-handed batter. He pitches largely off a 96 mph fastball and excels at eliciting weak contact, with an elite 4.3% barrel percentage. It's a totally OK pickup. The distress sale continues at Camden Yards, as Soto joins righty Bryan Baker (traded to Tampa Bay) in a parade of exiting players likely to include All-Star slugger Ryan O'Hearn and right-handed starters Charlie Morton and Zach Eflin. In Foster, 26, they get a right-hander who likely will join Baltimore's bullpen almost immediately, as he pitched to a 0.83 WHIP at Class AA and recently earned a promotion to AAA. He's struck out 9.4 batters per nine innings since getting selected in the 2022 14th round out of McNeese State. Aracena, 20, is a bit more of a lottery ticket, having spent the entire season at the Mets' Florida complex league affiliate in Port St. Lucie. He's shown well, however, striking out 84 in 64 innings (nine starts and eight relief appearances) on the strength of fastball that's touched 99 mph. He should land on an Orioles full-season affiliate club. Neither pitcher was ranked among the Mets' top 30 prospects by Baseball America.
