Sean Payton's expectations were a mile higher than Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon
Gannon can't escape responsibility for the poor team performance this past Saturday. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton meant business in preseason Week 2. While neither Payton nor Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon played their starters in the 27-7 Broncos onslaught, the Broncos most assuredly were the team that executed with higher efficiency. Gannon recently informed the media that his head offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and defensive coordinator Nick Rallis weren't involved in calling plays in this past weekend's 27-7 loss. How convenient, especially considering that the Cardinals went a dismal 2-for-13 on third down, tallied only eight first downs through 47 total plays, and gave up a whopping 562 yards to the Broncos offense. What isn't very convenient is having to play against the Broncos, who finished the 2024 NFL season 10-7 and made the playoffs, even if it was just against their reserves. Payton is a future Hall of Fame coach who jump-started quarterback Drew Brees' career, winning Super XLIV, and making his name throughout the league by demanding excellence. Payton did not play many starters in Saturday's win, but his players played with a tenacity that matches his regimen at the very essence. Also, Payton reached the playoffs with a rookie at quarterback in Bo Nix last season. Contrarily, Gannon's Cardinals did not make the playoffs in 2024, and they didn't have a rookie at quarterback last season either. Additionally, when offensive coordinator Drew Petzing did call the offensive plays on Aug. 9, quarterback Kyler Murray threw a crucial red-zone interception on the very first possession of the game. Sure, it's only preseason, but there is no reason for Gannon and staff to take shortcomings lightly. Gannon is unquestionably a sufficient leader, but it is classless to slight the expertise of a veteran coach like Payton, especially when the Broncos performed exceptionally well on all sides of the football. Kansas City Chiefs DE Ashton Gillotte appreciates growth in his special teams role
During his press conference on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte shared his appreciation for any opportunities on special teams. "I think (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator) (Dave) Toub has put me in a lot of positions to work and compete," said Gillotte, "and that is kind of the bridge of trust there, him putting me in a position just to be able to work or put my talents on display. Then just doing it from there." Gillotte spent four seasons at Louisville. Last season, he earned Second-team All-ACC honors and led the Cardinals with 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, starting 12 games and recording 43 total tackles. He embraces the chances to play on special teams because it gets him in the game aside from the defensive game plan. "Yeah, obviously. Anything that gets you on the field is a good thing, and special teams is a big part of our game. Obviously, we want to get our special teams to be number one or number two type, because it is a phase of the game," said Gillotte, "The hidden phase or lost phase. Us being good on that will help set up our offense better (and) our defense better. So, really, any way we can contribute." The Chiefs have solid depth on the defensive line, but with recent injuries, it could put Gillotte in more packages for Steve Spagnuolo and less time on special teams during the season.

NFL Top 100: Houston Texans WR Nico Collins is No.32, will face Arizona Cardinals in 2025
Texans WR Nico Collins is yet another player from the 'NFL Top 100' the Cardinals will face in 2025. The NFL continues to reveal players in the yearly offseason "NFL Top 100." Three Arizona Cardinals players made the list, with linebacker Josh Sweat at No. 95, tight end Trey McBride at No. 65 and safety Budda Baker at No. 34, making the list for the sixth straight year. Several players the Cardinals will face in 2025 continue to be revealed. Last week, in revealing players Nos. 31-40, No. 32 is someone the Cardinals will face in 2025. Player No. 32 is Houston Texans receiver Nico Collins. He was not in the top 100 last year. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin said that Collins is "special" and "the real deal." He is big, physical and moves well. He is great after the catch, and cornerback Derek Stingley, his teammate, said he is nearly impossible to beat one-on-one. He made the top 100 despite missing five games in 2024. In 12 games, he caught 68 passes for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns, his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. He is an unlikely receiver star. He was just a third-round pick in 2021 and did not crack 500 yards in either of his first two seasons. He exploded in 2023 with 1,297 yards in 15 games and has flourished with quarterback C.J. Stroud. He has faced the Cardinals twice in his career. He has nine catches for 93 yards in those two games, including seven catches for 65 yards in 2023. He will have a chance to do more damage against the Cardinals late in the season. The Cardinals face the Texans on the road in Week 15 as part of the final six-game stretch with four games against 2024 division winners and two teams that were in the playoff race down to the final week. Collins hasn't scored yet against the Cardinals. Can they keep him out of the end zone again? 'NFL Top 100' opponents for Cardinals in 2025 Of the players in the top 100 revealed as of this week, the Cardinals face the following: Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast.
