It's Friday the 13th so why not binge these 5 truly terrifying TV shows

Metro17 hours ago

If you're wondering why, you saw a bloke in a hockey mask on your way to work this morning, it's because it's Friday the 13th.
And while Jason Voorhees might be trying to get to Crystal Lake so he can get busy slaughtering those pesky campers, I know exactly how you should spend this legendarily unlucky day.
Specifically, I think you should spend it watching some truly terrifying TV shows.
Why? Well, the sun may be shining (not in the Stephen King way), and the birds may be singing, but there's nothing quite like a good scare, is there? That feeling of creeping dread, the tingle down your spine, the sweat in your palms – ok maybe not that last one – can't be beat.
And as there are 140 days or so before Halloween and the start of the official spooky season, I think it being Friday the 13th is the perfect excuse to indulge in monsters and morbid.

So here are five truly horrifying TV shows that – if you're a fan of things that go bump in the night – you need to check out.
If you like feeling horribly anxious and enjoy spotting hidden ghosts, then I can't recommend The Haunting of Hill House enough.
This nightmarish Netflix series is based on Shirley Jackson's book of the same name and was directed by horror mastermind Mike Flanagan. A twisty-turny series, the show follows the Crain family as they deal with the horrors that lurk in their new home and try to escape from the paranormal entities that lurk within.
To say The Haunting of Hill House is scary would be a massive understatement. It's genuinely disturbing at times, and one of the few shows that had me hiding behind a cushion waiting for the horrors to end.
Still, it's not all chills and thrills; the series has a deeply satisfying story that's as complex as the ghosts are horrifying.
Don't take my word for it, though. Quentin Tarantino has called it his favourite Netflix show ever, and that's a man who knows a great story when he sees one.
The Haunting of Hill House can be streamed on Netflix now
From is kind of like Lost's younger brother who's going through a goth phase. What does that tortured metaphor mean? Well, like Lost and similar series, From is a mystery box show, but one that's full of horrible monsters like the worst jack-in-the-box imaginable.
If you've never had the pleasure of watching, the show follows the Matthews family after they have the bad fortune to drive through a small, unnamed town while on a road trip across the US. Unfortunately, once they drive in, they find themselves trapped – alongside several other residents – and besieged by weird creatures.
Shows like this, which are slow builds and rely on teasing the audience, are naturally very reliant on their cast to keep viewers engaged, and I think the From cast is exceptional.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say they're the show's secret weapon – especially Harold Perrineau, who plays the town's poor put-upon sheriff.
If the summer heat's getting you down, might I recommend The Terror, a series set in the frozen wilderness of the North Pole.
All three seasons of From is available to stream on NOW
Based on Dan Simmons's 2007 novel of the same name, the show follows the crews of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror as they explore the Arctic Archipelago in the hopes of completing the first crossing of the Northwest Passage.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, things don't go to plan, and the ships find themselves trapped in the tundra. The Terror documents how both crews try and survive in the icy wasteland as tempers fray, and a mysterious creature makes its presence known.
A dark tale wrapped in the clothes of prestige drama (presumably to keep warm), The Terror is a haunting and entertaining story about the thin line between civility and barbarity. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% is a must-watch for those who love chilling stories.
The Terror is available to stream on ITVX
Teacup might sound like the type of thing you'd pop on for the kids while you made dinner, but I can't recommend showing this to children.
The series follows a group of neighbours who one day find a strange man in a gas mask painting a blue line across their farmland. When they try and cross this line… well, let's just say bad things happen.
Shocking and more than a little confusing, Teacup is a surprisingly gory series, which means it won't be for everyone, but if the sight of blood and bone gets your pulse racing, then this may be the series for you. I must admit that the show does lose some steam towards the end, but I'd say the first five or so good, you won't be disappointed when the series takes a turn from overt horror to science fiction.
I'm not the only fan of the show either. On Reddit, SMNZ75 wrote he thought they did a fantastic job of 'taking what was pretty much a sci-fi book and making a great horror series'.
Teacup is available to stream on Paramount Plus
Last but not least, we come to The Outsider because every horror list has to have something written by Stephen King on it; otherwise, he comes to your house at night and gives you nightmares.
Anyway, completely made-up stories about the greatest horror author of our time aside, The Outsider boasts an impressive cast including Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Julianne Nicholson, and Jason Bateman. More Trending
The series tells the story of Detective Ralph Anderson (Mendelsohn) as he investigates the murder and mutilation of a young boy. While Ralph initially believes local coach Terry Maitland is the guilty man, he soon discovers something far more sinister at play.
A nightmarish version of NCIS, The Outsider is a dark take on the police procedural we've come to know and love that'll delight those with a fondness for the macabre. The real reason to watch, though, is Cynthia Erivo's performance; she's wicked in this.
As you'd imagine, I'm far from the only one to think that as well, with Vulture's Jan Chaney calling her 'superb' in her review.

Netflix series racks up 17 million views in just four days to dominate top 10 chart

Link is copied Comments It's that time of the week again - when the weekend is looming and we start to plan which shows we want to binge-watch over the coming days. And while the warmer weather might be luring more of us away from our TV screens and out into the open, there's still plenty of goodies waiting for you on the streaming platform when you make it back to the sofa. This week's global top 10 sees the return of some familiar Netflix favourites, racking up millions of views as they make a splash in the charts. Read on for this week's top 10 most-watched TV shows (Picture: Getty Images) Kicking off this week's countdown is Netflix's latest true crime documentary - which, like most of them, has kept us all gripped. Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders explores the 1980s deaths that occurred in Chicago from cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. Over the course of the doc, Netflix looks into multiple theories that could help solve the killings, plus tracks down a key suspect that could piece the case together (Picture: Netflix) With the new series of Ginny & Georgia landing on Netflix this week - and picking up rave reviews from fans - it's understandable that folk who are new to the series might want to catch up on what they've missed. Hence the reappearance of the first season of this popular show, about a free-spirited single mother and her troubled teenage daughter as they head to Massachusetts in search of a new life (Picture: NETFLIX) Another compelling true crime documentary making its way down the charts, this one explores the decades-long global fight to hunt down former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden following the devastating events of September 11, 2001. The documentary features rare footage and interviews with CIA insiders who worked on the case (Picture: Netflix) K-drama is continuing to prove hugely popular on Netflix and this latest effort is a charming blend of romance, culture, and gourmet food. It centres around Han Beom-woo, an arrogant executive director at Seoul's top restaurant, and Mo Yeon-joo, a stubborn but passionate rural chef who runs a remote, one-table establishment. At first, the pair clash - but as you might expect, romance soon blossoms (Picture: Netflix) More drama from South Korea now, in the shape of the first new entry in this week's chart. Mercy For None is an action thriller about a former gangster who, 11 years after he left his gang and went into hiding, returns to the criminal underworld seeking revenge for his brother's murder. Based on the webtoon Plaza Wars, you can expect lots of gritty thrills and tense moments with this one (Picture: Jung Jae-gu/Netflix) The second newcomer in this week's chart is this Australian miniseries, based on the 2020 novel by crime writer Jane Harper. Set in Tasmania, it centres on a man who returns to his hometown with his family 15 years after a deadly storm killed three people he was close to. However when a young woman is murdered, his troubled past comes back to haunt him (Picture: Netflix) Another new entry now, this one from Italy and featuring Teresa Saponangelo and Claudia Gerini - best known for her role in John Wick: Chapter 2. The series centres on a former secret agent - the titular Sara - who is known for her crime-solving skills and ability to lipread. She puts those skills to the test when she returns to spycraft to investigate her son's mysterious death, unravelling a web of secrets about his life (Picture: Netflix) After reigning supreme in the top spot for a fortnight, this dark comedy drama is on its way down but still doing big business with viewers. Sirens focuses on a troubled young woman called Devon, who is struggling to care for her father, who has dementia. When her sister, Simone, doesn't answer her siren call for help, she tracks her down on a luxury island, where she's working for the enigmatic billionaire Michaela 'Kiki' Kell - but soon becomes concerned for her welfare (Picture: MACALL POLAY/NETFLIX) This new Scotland-set crime thriller is proving a big draw with Netflix viewers, with the show leaping up the charts in its second week of release. Matthew Goode takes the lead as Carl Morck, a former top-rated detective who lives in guilt after an attack left a policeman dead and his partner paralysed. After taking some time off to deal with the event, he is assigned to cold cases, only to be confronted with one that will take every ounce of his being to solve. Based on the book series by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, it's packed with twists and turns to keep you guessing (Picture: Netflix) Given the popularity of Ginny & Georgia it's no surprise to see the new series of the show crash straight into the charts at number one - with nearly twice as many viewers as its nearest rival. Although given that series two ended on a cliffhanger involving a wedding, the police and a murder, it's understandable you would have tuned in in your millions to find out what happens next. We won't spoil it for you but with Georgia's past threatening to catch up with her, Ginny's life just got a lot more complicated. And with a fourth series already confirmed, there's even more drama to come (Picture: Amanda Matlovich/Netflix)

Shoppers say 'no' as holiday decorations on sale 'way too early'

While lots of people are looking forward to seasonal festivities, others think it's too early to start celebrating Halloween fans have been left divided after a shopper spotted seasonal decorations in TK Maxx. Facebook Page Dansway Gifts and Bargains UK caused quite the buzz when it shared pictures of TK Maxx's Halloween range online this week. The post read: "Halloween Home Ornaments are starting to arrive in store at TK Maxx already!" It was accompanied by pictures of a store with rows of themed decor up for grabs, including ghost, skull, and pumpkin ornaments. The decorations delighted several people, but confused others who suggested June is too early to start selling the themed items. ‌ A debate followed, as people were quick to weigh in on when they'd expect stores to introduce Halloween items ahead of October 31. For many shoppers, it was welcome news, and several commenters were keen to plan trips to browse the range. ‌ One such fan wrote: "We need a shopping date! I need all of this." Someone else replied with heart emojis, writing: "Oh look new home decor." Another excited viewer replied: "SPOOKY SEASON." Meanwhile, a fan added: "Summerween trip." Their friend replied: "We need to go." A similar response said: "Trip to TK Maxx needed soon." A keen shopper wrote: "It's everywhere tempting me already." Someone else commented: "TK Max as well as the Range then." Not everyone was quite so excited, though. One unimpressed social media user wrote: "No no NO ….. let's have summer first before we start seeing autumn things ….. jeeeez way too early!!" Someone else replied: "Summer hasn't even arrived," before adding a laughing emoji. Elsewhere, a commenter asked: "Ooh are they properly putting things out now or is it leftovers from last year? Will pay a visit next week." Dansway Gifts and Bargains UK replied: "We spoke to a member of staff in store and they said this wasn't old stock. They expect more to arrive in the near future. Hope that helps." ‌ There's also a selection of festive decor on TK Maxx's website. At the time of writing, it featured over 200 Halloween products, including throws, duvet sets, cushions, and candles. For cushion lovers, the current selection includes a £49.99 Isaac Mizrahi White Skelton Cushion Buddy 81x152cm, a £19.99 Martha Stewart Two Pack White Boucle Ghost Cushions, and a £29.99 Martha Stewart Three Pack Tonal Pink Ghost Shape Decorative Cushions. Shoppers looking for bedding might like the £24.99 Chelsea Peers Double Pink Ghost Duvet Cover Set discounted from £24.99. There's also the £24.99 Goblin & Ghoul Sage Ghost Pumpkin Halloween Throw 127x177cm, and the £24.99 Rachel Zoe White Tossed Ghosts Patterned Throw 120x180cm. Other themed items include the £12.99 Afternoon Stroll Scented Candle 275g, the £14.99 Silver Tone Witch Hat Halloween Decoration 33x26cm, and the £9.99 White Boo Ghosts Halloween Decoration 12x23cm.
