SERDANG : In 2014, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi proposed to the United Nations an annual International Day of Yoga. The selected date, June 21, marks the summer solstice and symbolises light, energy and renewal.
The first official celebration took place in New Delhi in 2015, where two Guinness World Records were set: one for the largest yoga class with 35,985 people, and another for the highest number of participating nationalities, at 84.
Now, Malaysia has added its own milestone to the global movement. On Saturday (June 21), some 5,368 participants came together at MAEPS Serdang for the largest yoga gathering in the country's history.
The event, organised by the Sakthi School of Yoga, was officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records.

Participants began arriving as early as 7am, all dressed in white with yoga mats slung over their shoulders. The crowd was a vibrant mix of men, women, young and old, including several first-timers.
On stage, experienced practitioners, seniors, children, and even pregnant women demonstrated impressive poses.
Sakthi School founder SK Durai then led the large-scale session with an 18-minute practice for inner well-being called Sakthi Kriya.
The sequence included five asanas or poses – such as the cobra pose, cat stretch, and spinal twists – followed by three kriyas, aimed at purifying the mind, body and energy system. Watching thousands in the hall move in perfect unison was a spectacular sight.
The session concluded with a collective breathing technique, as the entire hall echoed with the sound of 'Aum'.

Another highlight was a 'Ramayana' performance by students of the school, who brought the Hindu epic to life through a series of expressive yoga poses.
'The goal of yoga is the realisation of one's own potential, of which if every human being becomes aware, the world will see more peace, love and joy,' Durai told FMT Lifestyle.
'This was the major inspiration for organising an event on such a scale.'
He also noted that efforts were made to ensure inclusivity, without intruding on anyone's personal beliefs, religion or cultural identity.
Indeed, many Chinese and Malay individuals were seen taking part in the gathering. 'We are truly honoured and blessed,' Durai added.

To date, over 650 teachers have completed their training at the Sakthi School of Yoga, which was founded in 2016 and has branches in Malaysia and India.
Its charitable arm, Sakthi Foundation, continues to serve the local community through free tuition for B40 students, food distribution to the homeless, and yoga programmes in children's homes.
'There is no practice more important than yoga, and there is nothing more important in yoga than practice,' Durai said. 'There is no age to do yoga, and no ageing if you do yoga.
'My advice would be to embark on this journey no matter your circumstances or physical condition, as it will surely transform your life.'

Spirit of unity on show, says Chow Kon Yeow, as 40,000 attend Asean Navies' City Parade in Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 — The Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP), held in conjunction with the state government's Hari Buletin 4.0 celebration at Padang Kota Lama today, attracted over 40,000 visitors. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) aimed to increase participation and offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the advanced assets and equipment of regional naval fleets. 'The strong turnout, both local and international, reflects the spirit of unity in Penang's diversity,' he said, expressing his gratitude to the RMN for their efforts in ensuring the success of this year's Hari Buletin, during the closing ceremony. The ANCP and Hari Buletin featured a naval parade with ships from 10 Asean nations, combat boat demonstrations, a flypast by RMN helicopters, a silent drill display, a military band performance, as well as engaging activities such as a colouring contest, costume competition, lucky draws, exhibitions by various government agencies, and food stalls. The ANCP is an RMN initiative to introduce naval military traditions to the public. Hari Buletin, on the other hand, celebrates the readers of Buletin Mutiara, the state's official newspaper, which provides valuable insights into Penang's policies, community programmes, and local news. This year's ANCP coincides with key regional events, including the 19th Asean Naval Chiefs Meeting (ANCM), the third Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX), and the Asean Fleet Review (AFR), all taking place around Penang. — Bernama

Thousands turn up in Penang to tour Asean naval ships at Swettenham Pier

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 — The atmosphere at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) was vibrant today, as thousands of visitors eagerly took the chance to board naval ships from Asean countries. The event, part of the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP) and the 4.0 Bulletin Day celebration organised by the state government, attracted a diverse crowd, including families, school students, and military enthusiasts. They were thrilled to explore the advanced maritime defence assets from across the region. For retired Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel Mohd Fauzi Bakar, 68, today's experience was especially meaningful. Despite serving for 21 years, he had never been on a foreign warship. 'Asean has some highly advanced ships with a wide range of weaponry, comparable to Malaysia's assets. Boarding these ships gives the public a unique experience,' he told Bernama after exploring the Asean naval ships at SPCT here today. Lajelen, 19, a student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Hutchings here, shared his excitement about witnessing the military technology of Asean countries, particularly their weaponry systems. 'My friends and I are thrilled. This is the first time we've been on such advanced ships. We've never even boarded our own country's ships, so this is a unique opportunity,' he said. Rachel Teh, 35, a private-sector employee, also found the visit to the warships memorable, especially after seeing them from afar at Padang Kota in the past few days. 'This is my first time exploring a naval warship up close. I'm amazed by the onboard technology, and this experience certainly boosts our patriotism,' she said. Two students from SMK Alma in Bukit Mertajam, Alia Kaisara Roslan and Nur Fatini Abdul Hamid, both 17, shared that although they had previously visited an RMN ship in Lumut, today's experience was even more exciting, as they had the chance to board vessels from across Asean. 'We visited all the ships to experience something new. Onboard, we were given briefings about the weapons and equipment, like the cannons. It was really fun,' said Nur Fatini. A total of 10 Asean naval ships, including seven Asean warships and three RMN vessels, are currently docked at SPCT for a military event celebrating Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship in 2025. The ships include RMN's KD Kedah, KD Lekiu, and KD Lekir, as well as ships from Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The ships are open for public tours from noon to 6 pm today. Penang is hosting the region's largest maritime military event from Aug 15 to 22, organised by the RMN. It includes three major events: the 19th Asean Naval Chiefs Meeting (ANCM), the third Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX), and the Asean Fleet Review (AFR). — Bernama

In appreciation of the services of RMN veterans and recognition of past service, a total of 30 RMN Veterans also participated in the parade at this year's ANCP, in addition to being enlivened by the participation of the Penang Chinese Peranakan Association, Boria Omara and the Penang Chingay Association. Earlier, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib inspected the Main Guard of Honour led by RMN Lieutenant Commander Mohd Amirul Abdullah Hanan and Lieutenant Abdul Hakim Mohd Sidek who carried the pennant of RMN 23rd Squadron. Meanwhile, commander of Naval Region 3 First Admiral Mohd Norizal Fahrudin said traditionally, the Navies City Parade event is an official parade involving personnel and naval assets from various countries and is usually held in major urban areas.
